Changing the Republican Party\u2019s platform would be a departure from the GOP\u2019s decadeslong support for a federal ban on abortion.\u00a0The position would align with the Supreme Court\u2019s <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em> decision in 2022 that returned the abortion question back to the states.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s position is drawing ire from some anti-abortion coalitions who say withdrawing support from a federal ban on abortion undermines the conservative movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Trump campaign decides to remove national protections for the unborn in the GOP platform, it would be a miscalculation that would hurt party unity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/delegate-trump-to-gut-platform-and-make-abortion-a-state-issue\/\" title=\"Delegate: Trump To Gut Platform And Make Abortion A &#039;State Issue&#039;\">destroy pro-life enthusiasm<\/a> between now and the election,\u201d Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sba-leader-weakening-gops-pro-life-platform-would-be-a-miscalculation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Former President Donald Trump kisses a baby during a campaign rally in Colorado. (AP Photo\/Evan Vucci)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Dannenfelser claims changing the platform would hurt Republican turnout in November, Trump says it would help his reelection efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to get elected,\u201d the former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/27\/politics\/read-biden-trump-debate-rush-transcript\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>explained<\/a> last month. During the first presidential debate, he indicated that keeping abortion at the state level smoothed the path for voters to support Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s bringing it back to the vote of the people,\u201d Trump told the country in June. \u201cThe states are voting and in many cases,\u00a0it\u2019s, frankly, a very liberal decision. In many cases, it\u2019s the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other conservatives are frustrated with the shake-up of the anti-abortion strategy. Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, a Republican National Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ann-coulter-if-only-putin-had-invaded-mexico\/\" title=\"Ann Coulter: If Only Putin Had Invaded Mexico\u2026\">platform committee<\/a> member, is another social conservative concerned that the platform\u2019s language calling for a constitutional amendment against abortion could be removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParty platforms matter,\u201d Perkins said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstand.com\/news\/launch-of-platform-integrity-project-seeks-to-keep-conservative-planks-ahead-of-gop-convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>, according to the <em>Washington Stand<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican Party must once again communicate a clear and hopeful contrast between the parties by painting a message for voters on the foundational issues \u2014 life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness \u2014 not in pale pastels but in bright, bold colors,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Perkins\u2019s FRC has joined a host of like-minded socially conservative actions in launching the <a href=\"https:\/\/platformintegrityproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Platform Integrity Project<\/a>. The initiative warns Republican delegates writing the party platform to use language that \u201cpreserve[s] life and family values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Led by some of the nation\u2019s largest anti-abortion organizations, the Platform Integrity Project has also <a href=\"https:\/\/platformintegrityproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>voiced<\/a> concern that the Trump campaign is keeping the issue in the shadows ahead of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
