From <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/26\/opinion\/disinfo-pusher-nina-jankowicz-is-back-to-tell-americans-what-to-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cDisinformation czars\u201d<\/a> to tongue-cutting <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4753747-missouri-sues-new-york-trump-conviction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gag orders<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/31\/politics\/trump-special-counsel-gag-order-classified-documents\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">political enemies<\/a>, the Biden years will be remembered for unrivaled attacks on primary rights. <\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.gwu.edu\/jonathan-turley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Turley<\/a> writes in his new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Indispensable-Right\/Jonathan-Turley\/9781668047040\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow\"><em>The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage<\/em><\/a>, Joe Biden is \u201cthe most anti-free speech president since John Adams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has created an unprecedented system of censorship through financial support and his public statements. So the idea that he is really the symbol of constitutional fealty is really alarming, it\u2019s so detached from reality,\u201d the attorney, law professor, columnist, and popular television analyst recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/jonathan-turley-biden-is-the-most-anti-free-speech-president-since-john-adams\/vi-BB1phNvz?ocid=a2hs%252Ca2hs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> on Fox News Radio\u2019s \u201cBrian Kilmeade Show.\u201d  <\/p>\n<h2>Criminalizing Criticism<\/h2>\n<p>Turley isn\u2019t spinning hyperbole. Adams\u2019 wholehearted support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/the-constitution\/historic-document-library\/detail\/the-alien-and-sedition-acts-1798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sedition Act<\/a> saw a sweeping attack on free speech and freedom of the press at the dawn of the republic. Political enemies were arrested and sent to prison for criticizing the government.  <\/p>\n<p>One of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/us\/19e.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most dramatic<\/a>\u201d victims of the law was a representative from Vermont, Matthew Lyon, who was imprisoned for speaking out against President Adams\u2019 \u201cunbounded thirst for ridiculous pomp, foolish adulation, and self avarice.\u201d He also <em>reportedly<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/a-look-back-sedition-free-speech-and-the-president\">featured<\/a> such rhetoric in his campaign speeches.  <\/p>\n<p>Lyon <em>purportedly<\/em> won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/us\/19e.asp\">reelection<\/a> \u2014 from his jail cell. <\/p>\n<p>Sound familiar? <\/p>\n<h2>A Dark Age for Freedom of Speech<\/h2>\n<p>Biden\u2019s politically weaponized Department of Justice, led by Democrat Party henchman Attorney General Merrick Garland, has unleashed a prosecutorial whirlwind on former President Donald Trump, Biden\u2019s Republican challenger in the rematch of the 2020 presidential election. In large part, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/sco-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith<\/a> is targeting Trump for his speech \u2014 what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/history-of-white-house-transitions-and-inauguration\/\" title=\"History of White House transitions and inauguration\">outgoing president<\/a> said to his supporters on Jan. 6, 2021. His words \u2014 that demonstrators who believed the election was stolen would march to the Capitol \u201cpeacefully and patriotically\u201d \u2014 became the impetus for charges of \u201cinsurrection\u201d and \u201celection interference.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors, too, went after hundreds of Americans, <s>many of them engaging in \u201cmostly peaceful protests,\u201d<\/s> unconstitutionally employing a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/28\/supreme-court-tosses-obstruction-charges-for-j6-defendants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2002 obstruction law<\/a> that the U.S. Supreme Court recently found to be an abuse of power. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, leftist judges have slapped Trump with gag orders silencing his ability to defend himself in the court of public opinion. The former president has come dangerously close to being ordered to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-revokes-derek-chauvins-bail-sets-sentencing-hearing-for-eight-weeks\/\" title=\"Judge Revokes Derek Chauvin\u2019s Bail, Sets Sentencing Hearing For Eight Weeks\">serve jail time<\/a> for violating the orders. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Biden administration has worked with Big Tech to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/27\/free-speech-fight-will-go-on-after-supreme-courts-devastating-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">silence opposition<\/a> to their policies, shutting down those who dare to speak out against pandemic lockdowns or the efficacy and dangers of Covid vaccines. The deep state has interfered in elections, using former intelligence agency officials to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/25\/us-news\/cia-admits-some-spies-who-lie-were-active-contractors-as-records-show-internal-fear-of-long-run-harm-of-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">push a lie<\/a> that \u201cRussian disinformation\u201d was behind a damning laptop owned by Biden\u2019s convicted felon son. Speaking of disinformation,\u00a0Biden\u2019s Department of Homeland Security was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/18\/biden-admin-pauses-disinformation-governance-board-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut down<\/a> an Orwellian \u201cDisinformation Governance Board\u201d after Americans saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/09\/the-biden-administrations-new-disinformation-board-is-a-tool-straight-from-soviet-russias-kgb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KGB-style speech monitor<\/a> for what it was: a threat to the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Limits of Presidential Powers\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In the wake of this week\u2019s Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/23pdf\/23-939_e2pg.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruling<\/a> on presidential immunity, after Justice Sonia Sotomayor ridiculously warned that the down-the-middle decision allows presidents to order the assassination of their political enemies, Biden just as ridiculously insisted that he had \u201ccharacter\u201d enough to resist abusing his powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I will respect the limits of the presidential powers that I have for three-and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ex-trump-aide-paul-manafort-cant-be-prosecuted-in-new-york-following-pardon-court-rules\/\" title=\"Ex-Trump Aide Paul Manafort Can\u2019t Be Prosecuted in New York Following Pardon, Court Rules\">-a-half years<\/a>. But any president, including Donald Trump, will now be free to ignore the law,\u201d Biden claimed in a brief speech following both the court\u2019s ruling and his disastrous debate performance last week.  <\/p>\n<p>Turley told Kilmeade that not only are Joe Biden and Justice Sotomayor not telling the truth to the American people, but the current White House resident is anything but a beacon of integrity on the limits of executive branch power. (On a related note, Turley mentions how Biden was vice president when then-President Barack Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/12\/president-obamas-weak-defense-of-his-record-on-drone-strikes\/511454\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered the<\/a> targeted killings of U.S. citizens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/video\/aclu-ccr-lawsuit-american-boy-killed-us-drone-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including a 16-year-old boy<\/a> \u2014 who had not been charged or convicted of a crime \u2014 in a drone strike in Yemen.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis president has racked up an impressive array of losses in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/federal-court-is-fast-tracking-sidney-powells-request-for-a-forensic-exam-of-dominion-voting-machines\/\" title=\"Federal Court Is Fast-Tracking Sidney Powell\u2019s Request For A Forensic Exam Of Dominion Voting Machines\">federal court<\/a> that repeatedly found that he has violated the Constitution, including racial discrimination rulings,\u201d Turley said. <\/p>\n<h2>A Legacy of Destruction<\/h2>\n<p>The legal expert takes his new book\u2019s title from Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, a tireless voice for civil liberties and the indispensable right of free expression.<\/p>\n<p>In a 1927 <a href=\"https:\/\/share.constitutioncenter.org\/museum\/exhibits-programs\/the-first-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opinion<\/a> Brandeis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/about\/louis-brandeis.html#:~:text=In%20a%201927%20opinion%20he,%2C%20discussion%20would%20be%20futile%20%E2%80%A6%20%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cThose who won our independence \u2026 believed that freedom to think as you will and to speak as you think are means indispensable to the discovery and spread of political truth; that, without free speech and assembly, discussion would be futile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The difference between John Adams and Joe Biden is that Adams performed countless acts of noble service to this exceptional land of liberty, despite some very wrongheaded and tyrannical policies to the contrary.
