A small but<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3068503\/democrats-who-say-biden-should-drop-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> growing<\/a> group of Democrats have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067689\/first-house-democrat-lloyd-doggett-biden-withdraw-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> asked him to stand aside<\/a> and let Vice President Kamala Harris take the reins.<\/p>\n<p>The president is appearing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congress-weighs-federal-dollars-to-address-baltimore-bridge-collapse\/\" title=\"Congress considers allocating federal funding to address the Baltimore bridge collapse\">move full steam ahead<\/a>, preparing to ease voters\u2019 concerns with events<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3068048\/biden-moves-put-out-fires-following-trump-debate-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> throughout the Fourth of July<\/a> holiday in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Biden will sit down with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos for an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067899\/abc-news-first-biden-interview-lackluster-debate-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> exclusive interview<\/a> this week and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog\/2024-elections-live-updates-biden-trump-house-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> hold a call<\/a> with Democratic governors. <\/p>\n<p>Responding to concerns Biden had been too walled off from media questions, Biden will hold a press conference next week to face multiple reporters, the White House also said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The effort to get Biden, 81, out in public more also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kirby-wont-rule-out-sending-american-forces-into-gaza-to-extract-hostages\/\" title=\"Kirby doesn&#039;t dismiss the possibility of deploying US forces to rescue hostages in Gaza.\">carries inherent risks<\/a>. Another notable gaffe or memory lapse could sink the campaign that has until now weathered acute concerns about Biden\u2019s age and mental fitness following special counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2845770\/hur-report-biden-as-elderly-man-poor-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Robert Hur\u2019s report\">Robert Hur\u2019s report<\/a> that assessed Biden shouldn\u2019t be prosecuted for mishandling classified documents because a jury would perceive the president as \u201ca sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House has cast the debate as one bad night but not a lingering condition. Biden apologized to donors for his poor debate performance and offered up his travel schedule as an explanation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to travel around the world a couple of times \u2026 shortly before the debate,\u201d Biden told donors at a campaign reception Tuesday evening as he spoke without a teleprompter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t listen to my staff \u2026 and then I almost fell asleep onstage,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>Biden had a five-day trip to the G7 conference in Italy and to campaign in Los Angeles that ended June 16. Biden, however, spent six days before the June 27 debate holed up at Camp David where his rehearsals<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/02\/us\/politics\/biden-lapses.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&#038;referringSource=articleShare&#038;sgrp=c-cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> reportedly<\/a> never started before 11 a.m. and he had time for afternoon naps.<\/p>\n<p>In the immediate aftermath of the debate that sent Democrats into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-lefts-war-with-biological-reality\/\" title=\"The Left\u2019s War With Biological Reality\">full-blown panic<\/a> for Biden\u2019s meandering answers, dazed look, and confusing responses, Biden has largely stuck to the teleprompter and avoided questions this week.<\/p>\n<p>This is not unusual, as the president has frustrated the press many times throughout his presidency for not doing sit-down interviews with publications like the <em>Washington Post<\/em> and the <em>New York Times<\/em> and limiting his press conferences. <\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the debate and his ability to only perform well when directed, congressional Democrats are debating how Biden should approach upcoming appearances: whether he should be more unleashed, with sit-down interviews and town halls, or retreat to \u201cbasement Biden\u201d tactics he favored during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/chris-coons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Chris Coons <\/a>(D-DE), a co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, called for the president to have more unscripted appearances, which could prove to be a risky strategy given Biden\u2019s knack for making gaffes and attempting off-topic quips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do need to see more unscripted and off-the-record moments. That is something I\u2019m encouraging,\u201d he said in an interview with <em>CNN This Morning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on MSNBC on Tuesday she thinks that Biden should do more \u201cno-holds-barred\u201d interviews with \u201cserious journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot one, maybe two. I think that is essential for them to do that,\u201d Pelosi<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/igorbobic\/status\/1808172596447399998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Jim Manley, a Democratic strategist and former Senate leadership aide, told the <em>Hill<\/em> in an interview that he thinks Biden\u2019s campaign should change his strategy now that polling is showing the president is the underdog in the 2024 race. A CNN poll released Tuesday found that voters nationwide favor Trump over Biden<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/02\/politics\/cnn-poll-post-debate\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> by 6 points<\/a>, 49% to 43%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny Democrat who doesn\u2019t think he\u2019s an underdog at this point of time needs to get their head examined,\u201d Manley said. \u201cThere\u2019s a real problem here. Hopefully the Biden folks understand that and are trying to figure out what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) became the first sitting House Democrat to call on Biden to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067226\/tim-ryan-calls-harris-take-over-biden-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>withdraw from the 2024 presidential race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president failed to effectively defend his many accomplishments and expose Trump\u2019s many lies,\u201d Doggett said in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067689\/first-house-democrat-lloyd-doggett-biden-withdraw-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> statement<\/a>. \u201cRecognizing that unlike Trump, President Biden\u2019s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other lawmakers have not denied that the performance reflected badly on the Democratic Party as a whole. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) noted that Biden\u2019s debate \u201cwasn\u2019t just a horrible night\u201d for the president and Biden must \u201cbe honest with himself\u201d as he considers his place on the ballot in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t go beyond that, out of my respect and understanding of President Joe Biden, the very proud person who has served us extraordinarily well for 50 years,\u201d Quigley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/mike-quigley-joe-biden-wasnt-just-horrible-night_n_6683fa4ee4b038babc7cf685?d_id=7848652&#038;ncid_tag=tweetlnkushpmg00000016&#038;utm_medium=Social&#038;utm_source=Twitter&#038;utm_campaign=us_politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told CNN<\/a>. \u201cI just want him to appreciate at this time just how much it impacts not just his race but all the other races coming in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Biden\u2019s part, he insists he can still win the election as the White House seeks to turn the page on the debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president has been out there. He\u2019s been listening to supporters,\u201d White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. \u201cI think it matters that he\u2019s going to do an interview on Friday.
