Pelosi\u2019s\u200b comments were a marked change\u2062 from her previous full-throated support of Biden.<\/p>\n<p>In a further blow to Biden, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3064346\/axios-morning-consult-poll-shows-trump-snapping-losing-streak-and-leading-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>new poll<\/a> released by Axios and Morning Consult showed Trump \u2064leading Biden\u2062 by 5 points, \u200ca \u2064complete \u2064reversal from previous polling \u200bthat had shown \u200dBiden with a commanding lead.\u2064 The poll also revealed that most voters believed Biden lost\u2064 the debate against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Adding insult to\u2064 injury, a ruling by a federal judge in the 9th Circuit also went in Trump\u2019s favor. The \u200cjudge ruled that Trump\u2019s \u2062legal team could depose a\u2064 key Biden adviser in a lawsuit\u2062 over alleged spying on \u2064the Trump \u200ccampaign.<\/p>\n<p>That night, Biden made a surprise visit to the D.C. Emergency Operations\u200b Center, hoping for\u2064 some positive \u200cpress coverage, but his earlier woes overshadowed the event.<\/p>\n<p>Biden persevered on, \u200dwith his team vowing to fight back against what they called a \u201csmear campaign\u201d\u2062 orchestrated by Trump and his allies. More negative press coverage, growing calls from other Democrats for him to abandon his reelection ambitions, one of the worst polls since he launched his 2020 campaign, and another legal victory for Trump made Tuesday perhaps the roughest day for Biden in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-blames-debate-performance-on-travel-schedule-11-days-before-event-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Biden blames debate performance on travel schedule 11 days before event - Washington Examiner\">entire 2024 campaign season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how it unfolded:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">President Joe Biden speaks during a visit to the D.C. (AP Photo\/Evan Vucci)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Morning<\/h2>\n<p>The day began with a damning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/07\/02\/biden-campaign-debate-inner-circle-00166160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>report<\/a> from <em>Politico<\/em>, assembled from interviews with over two dozen Democrats with knowledge of the inside workings of the White House. The report portrayed Biden as angry and cloistered by a \u201ccabal\u201d of close advisers, cut off from the outside world. The president\u2019s team disputed the characterization.<\/p>\n<p>A few hours later, another major Biden ally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067226\/tim-ryan-calls-harris-take-over-biden-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>turned on him<\/a>. Former Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, the first 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to drop out to throw his support behind Biden, wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/kamala-harris-should-democratic-nominee-president-2024-opinion-1919894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>op-ed<\/a> for <em>Newsweek<\/em> that Biden should be replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris. He called the debate a \u201chistorically dreadful night\u201d and Biden\u2019s performance \u201cheartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) went the furthest a sitting Democratic representative had yet come to calling for Biden to drop out, arguing that the debate wasn\u2019t an aberration. However, he stopped short of directly suggesting that Biden should drop out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t go beyond that, out of my respect and understanding of President Joe Biden, the very proud person who has served us extraordinarily well for 50 years,\u201d Quigley <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CNNThisMorning\/status\/1808110832514957647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told CNN<\/a>. \u201cI just want him to appreciate at this time just how much it impacts not just his race but all the other races coming in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Afternoon<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately for Biden, the worst was to come in the afternoon, with several crushing events occurring almost simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) went further than Quigley, becoming the first sitting House Democrat to call on Biden to withdraw from the presidential race. In his lengthy statement, he thanked Biden for what he has done so far but cited his debate performance as showing that he didn\u2019t have what it took to be president anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president failed to effectively defend his many accomplishments and expose Trump\u2019s many lies,\u201d he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067689\/first-house-democrat-lloyd-doggett-biden-withdraw-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>. \u201cRecognizing that unlike Trump, President Biden\u2019s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly every sitting Democrat had defended Biden in the aftermath of the debate, but Doggett\u2019s breaking ranks could mark a shift.<\/p>\n<p>He was soon joined by former Obama Cabinet member Julian Castro, who said Biden should \u201cabsolutely\u201d withdraw from the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that there are stronger options out there for Democrats,\u201d Castro said on MSNBC. \u201cWe have a stable of folks who could do a better job, including Vice President [Kamala] Harris. Jared Golden (D-ME), who faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/facing-stock-trade-controversy-cindy-axne-used-taxpayer-funds-to-hire-dem-fixer\/\" title=\"Facing Stock Trade Controversy, Cindy Axne Used Taxpayer Funds To Hire Dem Fixer\">difficult reelection bid<\/a> this November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2024\/07\/02\/opinion\/opinion-contributor\/jared-golden-donald-trump-going-to-win-election-democracy-be-just-fine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote in an op-ed<\/a> released on Tuesday that Biden\u2019s debate performance was \u201cnot a surprise\u201d and it has been clear \u201cfor months\u201d that Trump is going to win the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m OK with that,\u201d the House Democrat added. \u201cThere are winners and losers in every election. Democrats\u2019 post-debate hand-wringing is based on the idea that a Trump victory is not just a political loss, but a unique threat to our democracy. I reject the premise.\u00a0Unlike Biden and many others, I refuse to participate in a campaign to scare voters with the idea that Trump will end our democratic system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her first press briefing since the debate, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made a big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3068094\/white-house-hunter-biden-sat-presidents-meetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>admission<\/a> \u2014 that embattled first son Hunter Biden attended a meeting with his father before the president\u2019s speech regarding the Supreme Court\u2019s immunity decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunter came back with him and walked with him into that meeting, that prep, that speech prep, and you know, and he ended up spending time with his dad and his family that night,\u201d Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday. \u201cThat is basically what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I can say is that he came back with his dad from Camp David,\u201d she said. \u201cHe walked him into the speech prep. He was in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her remarks lent credence to reports that Hunter Biden has been closely advising his father in political matters.<\/p>\n<p>NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/hunter-biden-white-house-meetings-president-debate-rcna159975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reported<\/a> Tuesday that Hunter Biden has been \u201cclosely advising his father since the family gathered this past weekend at Camp David after Thursday\u2019s debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A person familiar with the matter said Hunter Biden has \u201cpopped into\u201d a couple of meetings and phone calls the president has had with advisers, according to the outlet, which added, \u201cAnother person familiar with the matter said the reaction from some senior White House staff has been, \u2018What the hell is happening?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre also had to fight off several questions about Joe Biden\u2019s mental acuity, which caused her to grow visibly frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an answer for you: Are you ready for it?\u201d Jean-Pierre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3068268\/white-house-biden-does-not-have-alzheimers-cognitive-test-not-warranted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>responded<\/a> when asked if the president has dementia or any other degenerative mental illness. \u201cIt\u2019s a no. And I hope you\u2019re asking the other guy the same exact question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Puck News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/puck.news\/biden-plunges-in-swing-states-in-leaked-post-debate-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>obtained<\/a> a leaked, damning Democratic internal <a href=\"https:\/\/puck.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SUNDAY_Post-Debate_Landscape_2024_06_30__1_-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> showing Joe Biden with one of if not his worst showings in the presidential cycle yet. The president was found to be behind in every swing state.<\/p>\n<p>The polling showed Joe Biden behind Trump by about 10% in North Carolina, Georgia, and Arizona, the last two of which the president won in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also leads the president in Pennsylvania and Michigan, as well as Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Virginia, and New Mexico, according to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>The poll was conducted by OpenLabs, a progressive nonprofit organization largely trusted by Democrats. The data found that while the debate hadn\u2019t cratered national polls, as the Biden campaign has been keen to point out, it had a major impact on swing state voters who watched the debate and paid close attention to the race. States formerly believed to be blue strongholds were found to now be within Trump\u2019s striking distance.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, Trump\u2019s legal position improved substantially, with Judge Juan Merchan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3068066\/judge-postpones-trumps-hush-money-sentencing-to-september\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>delaying<\/a> Trump\u2019s sentencing in the New York hush money case until September in light of the recent Supreme Court immunity decision.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was formerly set to be sentenced on July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention. The delay all but guarantees Trump won\u2019t see jail time before the November election and won\u2019t face any restrictions on campaigning in the crucial months leading up to the election.<\/p>\n<p>Long-shot Democratic candidate also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marianne-williamson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Marianne Williamson<\/a> threw her hat into the fray on Tuesday afternoon, thanking Joe Biden for his service but calling for an open convention to decide a new nominee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden deserves our respect, our compassion, and our gratitude. The debate last week, however, made clear that the time is now for another Democratic candidate to take his place on the November ballot,\u201d Williamson <a href=\"https:\/\/marianne2024.com\/july-2024-statement-from-marianne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in a video statement.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evening<\/h2>\n<p>The president is set to step up his damage control beginning with a call on Wednesday with a group of Democratic governors looking for assurances. The call was precipitated by a governors-only call on Monday, during which they expressed concern and concluded that they would like to speak with the president directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a strategy someone is suggesting and there\u2019s a concern about what\u2019s coming next.
