James Carville, a chief strategist on former President Bill Clinton\u2019s 1992 campaign, said he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/06\/30\/biden-debate-campaign-pod-save-america-00165950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>doesn\u2019t think Biden<\/a> should be the nominee while several newsroom editorial boards have called for Biden to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/28\/opinion\/biden-election-debate-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>drop out<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) became the first Democratic member of Congress to call on Biden to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067689\/first-house-democrat-lloyd-doggett-biden-withdraw-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>withdraw as the nominee<\/a>. \u201cI represent the heart of a congressional district once represented by Lyndon Johnson.\u00a0Under very different circumstances, he made the painful decision to withdraw.\u00a0President Biden should do the same,\u201d Doggett said\u00a0in a statement Tuesday. Adam Frisch, the Colorado Democratic nominee for the 3rd Congressional District, said he was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/adamforcolorado\/status\/1808195136675106994?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>worried about the state of the presidential race<\/a>\u201d before calling on Biden to step down.<\/p>\n<p>But the Biden campaign is unequivocal that the president isn\u2019t backing away as the presumptive nominee as he huddled with his family at Camp David over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p>Here are the many ways Biden\u2019s campaign is pushing back against complaints.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biden campaign tries damage control and media pivot <\/h2>\n<p>The president had been kept in relatively safe environments, eschewing most public interactions that were not directly controlled by the White House or his campaign after the debate. But on Tuesday, it was announced that Biden will sit for an <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/president-joe-biden-sit-abc-news-friday-interview\/story?id=111618360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>interview with ABC News\u2019s<\/a> George Stephanopoulos with the first clip released on Friday and the full interview airing on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Over the Fourth of July weekend, he will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3068048\/biden-moves-put-out-fires-following-trump-debate-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>campaign in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania,<\/a> two battleground states that are crucial to winning the election, and will hold an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/important-questions-joe-biden-must-answer-at-his-first-official-press-conference\/\" title=\"Important Questions Joe Biden Must Answer at His First Official Press Conference\">official press conference<\/a> during his attendance at the NATO summit next week. \u201cI can assure you the president will be out and about talking directly to the American people,\u201d White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during Tuesday\u2019s press briefing, claiming the administration wants to turn the page from the debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a bad night,\u201d Jean-Pierre later conceded about Biden\u2019s debate performance. \u201cWe\u2019re going to continue to build on the unprecedented record by continuing to fight for the American people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s cleanup efforts are an abrupt change from the actions of Biden\u2019s allies last week. Moments after the CNN presidential debate concluded on Thursday, Jen O\u2019Malley Dillon, Biden\u2019s campaign chairwoman, claimed, \u201cBiden presented a positive and winning vision for the future of America\u201d in a statement completely ignoring the president\u2019s hoarse voice, moments where he lost his train of thought, and rambling statements.<\/p>\n<p>The refusal to address the panic over Biden continued during a DNC call on Saturday, when Chairman Jaime Harrison and Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez didn\u2019t address the president\u2019s poor showing, leaving some members feeling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3064829\/dnc-call-member-gaslit-regarding-concerns-biden-debate-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>gaslit<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a memo sent out on Saturday, O\u2019Malley Dillon pointed to the perception of voters in battleground states as reason for Biden to continue in his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s what else the voters saw immediately following the debate: President Biden met with grassroots supporters in Atlanta, <a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=db6b693f24f8d92d026e0c2d2&#038;id=3d8c7dce0d&#038;e=2a192e88e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dipped into Waffle House<\/a> for some late night food and some selfies, then touched down in North Carolina where he shook every hand on the tarmac before a rally the next day with fired-up voters that highlighted the stark contrast at the center of this race,\u201d O\u2019Malley Dillon wrote, projecting Biden as more energetic than what debate watchers saw.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Biden\u2019s strength in advertising <\/h2>\n<p>After the debate, Biden held a campaign rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, a state he is hoping to flip in November, that saw him give a far more forceful performance than the day before. <\/p>\n<p>The campaign quickly released a 60-second \u201cI know\u201d ad on Monday attacking Trump\u2019s \u201clies\u201d during the debate, hoping to change the narrative back on his rival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks, I know I\u2019m not a young man. But I know how to do this job. I know right from wrong. I know how to tell the truth,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3065198\/biden-debate-comeback-moment-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Biden said<\/a> indirectly, responding to criticism that he is too old to serve another four years in office. \u201cAnd I know, like millions of Americans know, when you get knocked down, you get back up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ad will air in battleground states, targeting a younger, more diverse audience on several networks including ESPN, TNT, Bravo, FX, Freeform, and Comedy Central.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"U-XXfex0_3Q\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I Know | Biden-Harris 2024\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U-XXfex0_3Q?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biden campaign brags over fundraising <\/h2>\n<p>On Tuesday, the campaign announced it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067009\/biden-campaign-projects-fundraising-strength-debate-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>raised $264 million<\/a> from April through June, with $127 million raised just in June, the best month for the campaign so far. The money raised in the second quarter was $75 million more than what the campaign raised in January through March.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign now has $240 million in cash on hand, an increase from the $212 million cash on had last month. Since the debate, Biden\u2019s campaign has raised $38 million, with $30 million coming from grassroots donations. Roughly half of those grassroots donations were first-time donors to the campaign during this election cycle. Thursday, the day of the debate, was the best grassroots fundraising day of the campaign, and Friday was the second best.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/perdue-files-with-fec-leaning-heavily-toward-challenging-raphael-warnock-in-2022-senate-race\/\" title=\"Perdue Files With FEC, \u2018Leaning Heavily Toward\u2019 Challenging Raphael Warnock In 2022 Senate Race\">source familiar told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that the big dollar fundraisers over the weekend exceeded the campaign\u2019s goals for total raised and attended. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Q2 fundraising haul is a testament to the committed and growing base of supporters standing firmly behind the\u00a0President\u00a0and Vice\u00a0President\u00a0and clear evidence that our voters understand the choice in this election between\u00a0President\u00a0Biden\u00a0fighting\u00a0for\u00a0the American people and Donald Trump fighting\u00a0for\u00a0himself as a convicted felon,\u201d\u00a0Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.  <\/p>\n<p>However, Trump\u2019s second-quarter totals dwarfed Biden\u2019s and effectively erased the financial lead Biden has held in the 2024 cycle. The Trump campaign announced it raised $331 million from April through June, with $111.8 million raised just in June. At the end of last month, Trump\u2019s campaign reported having $284.9 million cash on hand, more than $44 million above the $240 million cash on hand reported by Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning this quarter brought us a cash on hand advantage, which is punctuated by a Biden burn rate that grows while yielding no tangible results for them,\u201d Trump senior campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a statement. \u201cThis fundraising momentum is likely to grow even more as we head into a world-class convention and see the Democrats continue their circular firing squad in the aftermath of Biden\u2019s debate collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden campaign also touted more than 1,500 events in battleground states connected to its \u201cWeekend of Action\u201d mobilization plan. Top campaign officials and surrogates, including Harris, Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD), Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), and Harrison, led the events to rally supporters. Following the debate, the rate of volunteer signups was more than three times as much as an average day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dismiss Democrats as bedwetters<\/h2>\n<p>In a Saturday fundraising email titled \u201c7 Things To Tell Your Friends After The Debate\u201d the Biden campaign dismissed and downplayed concern from party members about Biden\u2019s capabilities. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bedwetting brigade is calling for Joe Biden to \u2018drop out.\u2019 That is the best possible way for Donald Trump to win and us to lose,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all: Joe Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee, period. End of story. Voters voted. He won overwhelmingly,\u201d the email continued. \u201cAnd if he were to drop out, it would lead to weeks of chaos, internal foodfighting, and a bunch of candidates who limp into a brutal floor fight at the convention, all while Donald Trump has time to speak to American voters uncontested.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The email also referenced flash polls from CNN, 538, SurveyUSA, Morning Consult, and Data for Progress, claiming the debate \u201cdid not change the horse race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But a Sunday poll from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/poll-debate-should-biden-be-running-mental-abilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CBS News\/YouGov\">CBS News-YouGov<\/a> showed 72% of registered voters don\u2019t think Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president, while only 49% said the same for Trump. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3067576\/cnn-polling-biden-performing-worse-any-democrat-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CNN poll <\/a>on Tuesday showed Biden behind other Democrats, including Harris, in hypothetical matchups against Trump. Phil Murphy (D-NJ), <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GunaRockYa\/status\/1808164097219088770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>claimed<\/a> Murphy \u201cspent two hrs with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/POTUS\">@POTUS<\/a> on Saturday night. They caught up privately and had dinner together, where they discussed topics ranging from the economy to Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre confirmed during the Tuesday press briefing Biden will meet with Democratic governors on Wednesday, with some attending in person and others attending virtually. <\/p>\n<p>Notably, Biden has limited his public remarks to engaging in as few unscripted moments as possible. He did not take questions after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3066753\/biden-condemns-supreme-court-trump-immunity-decision-terrible-disservice-to-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the public remarks<\/a> he gave on Monday evening following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to grant Trump some immunity from prosecution.
