Berry \u200cis scheduled to appear \u2062in court on July 23rd.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><br \/>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\"> <?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><html><body><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/jharris\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/jharris\/%20\"><span>Jared Harris<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   July 2, 2024 at 10:39am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A disturbing discovery among a pack of feral wolf-dog hybrids led to the rescue of an elderly woman and the arrest of one man.<\/p>\n<p>The situation unfolded last month when the Davidson County Sheriff\u2019s Office in North Carolina launched an investigation into alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nfl-veteran-shoves-news-camera-arrested-animal-cruelty-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal cruelty<\/a> and elder abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation soon took a dark turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the investigation,\u201d the sheriff\u2019s office wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/facebook-used-facilitate-illegal-immigrants-infiltration-us-border-crossing-fake-work-credentials-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> post on June 26, \u201cit was determined through observations, interviews, and medical evaluations that an elderly female was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/number-of-migrant-children-in-border-patrol-custody-drops-45-as-biden-admin-transfers-kids-to-hhs\/\" title=\"Number Of Migrant Children In Border Patrol Custody Drops 45% As Biden Admin Transfers Kids To HHS\">living inside<\/a> a residence with over 40 Wolf-Hybrid dogs and sustained injuries that led to a welfare check being conducted at the residence where the female resided.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeputies found the inside and the outside conditions of the residence to be uninhabitable for people and dogs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dogs inside the residence were not social and were later determined to be feral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The feral dogs were all euthanized on the order of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-ignores-harrys-lawyers-issues-orders-directly-troubling-evidence-document-destruction-emerges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">judge<\/a> based on their condition and the safety of the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/myfox8.com\/news\/north-carolina\/piedmont-triad\/40-feral-dogs-found-in-elderly-womans-home-in-denton-euthanized-man-charged-with-animal-cruelty-elderly-abuse-deputies-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WGHP-TV<\/a> in High Point, North Carolina, reported that Melvin \u201cSonny\u201d Berry was arrested by deputies on June 25 on one count of felony domestic elder abuse, 20 animal cruelty charges and a local ordinance charge.<\/p>\n<p>Those working in local animal resource centers were shocked by the discovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will say this is probably the worst I\u2019ve ever seen it as far as hoarding cases,\u201d Maria Wood, a community resources animal navigator in Forsyth County, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxii12.com\/article\/local-animal-resources-expert-weighs-in-on-40-feral-wolf-dogs-found-in-davidson-co-home\/61431291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WXII-TV<\/a> in Winston-Salem about the situation\u2019s place in a worrying trend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re left and right, they\u2019re popping up here and there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The complexities of this case were compounded by the type of animal being hoarded. Wolf-dog hybrids take specialized handling and care, something many people are not capable of providing.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wood, it is illegal to own a wolf-dog hybrid in the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/billy-graham-permanently-commemorated-us-capitol-rare-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The hybrids\u2019 size and temperament present a double threat in certain situations.<\/p>\n<p>The parentage of these mixes, part domesticated canine and part wild animal, can lead to unpredictable and dangerous behavior, especially when neglected, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wolf.org\/wolf-info\/basic-wolf-info\/wolves-and-humans\/wolf-dog-hybrids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Wolf Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Berry is scheduled for a court appearance on July 23.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
