Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   July 2, 2024 at 6:42am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>There are two views of President Joe Biden\u2019s performance in Thursday night\u2019s presidential debate, one good and one bad.<\/p>\n<p>The good take is that it was bad. Very bad, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>The bad take is that it was disqualifying.<\/p>\n<p>Pundits spent the hours following the debate emphasizing how many key Democrats were assessing their options in replacing the president atop the ticket. No fewer than two major newspapers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nyt-drops-bomb-biden-debate-wants-race-not-man-four-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tucker-carlson-drops-bombshell-unusually-good-source-obama-sabotage-biden-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a>, have editorially taken the position that Biden ought to step aside as the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n<p>Those who are in the \u201cgood take\u201d camp \u2014 mostly in Biden\u2019s administration or immediate orbit \u2014 spent the days following the debate in what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-30\/biden-loyalists-dismiss-calls-to-quit-in-frenetic-weekend-blitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> described as a \u201cfrenetic weekend blitz\u201d where they \u201cangrily denounced the suggestion Biden and his family might entertain a discussion of leaving the race as they traveled to Camp David for a private getaway, where photographer Annie Leibovitz would be taking pictures of the beleaguered clan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strategy will be remembered as a display of either remarkable foresight or incredible hubris,\u201d Bloomberg noted.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u201cremarkable foresight\u201d camp is American University political historian Steven Lichtman, whose model has correctly predicted nine out of the last 10 elections, including Donald Trump\u2019s victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He made news by going on CNN and telling host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-cnn-interview-rapper-ends-disaster-makes-classless-move-vulgar-statement-live-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abby Phillip<\/a> on Friday that it would be \u201ca huge mistake\u201d to replace Biden atop the ticket \u2014 although his logic may be less than convincing if you, you know, watched the debate.<\/p>\n<p>Lichtman, for the unacquainted, has a 13 \u201ckey\u201d criteria chart to predict how a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/are-covid-case-surges-more-fake-news\/\" title=\"Are COVID Case Surges More Fake News?\">presidential election<\/a> will go: party mandate, contest, incumbency, third party, short-term economy, long-term economy, policy change, social unrest, scandal, foreign\/military failure, foreign\/military success, incumbent charisma, challenger charisma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe rely on the 13 keys, which tap into the structure of how elections really work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they show that Democrats\u2019 really only chance to win, contrary to everything you\u2019ve heard, is with Biden running,\u201d Lichtman said. \u201cLook at the incumbency key. Biden checks that off. The contest key, he checks that off. He was uncontested. It takes six keys to count out the White House party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means of the remaining 11 keys, six would have to fully finish. Biden doesn\u2019t run. They lose the contest key. They lose the incumbency, and only four more keys would have to fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice that there\u2019s nothing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/stunning-post-debate-poll-sparks-panic-cnns-airwaves-never-seen-numbers-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regarding debates<\/a> here. How do debates affect candidacies, according to Lichtman?<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t: \u201cZero,\u201d he said when asked about the impact of Thursday\u2019s debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDebates are not predictive of outcomes,\u201d Lichtman said. \u201cHillary Clinton won all three debates, still lost. John Kerry won all the debates, still lost. Barack Obama got trounced 72 to 20 percent in the poll, worse than Biden, and went on to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for those talking about replacing Biden for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/shock-wh-aides-admit-biden-dependably-engaged-25-percent-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive decline<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge mistake,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re not doctors. They don\u2019t know whether Biden is physically capable of carrying out a second term or not. Remember, a lot of folks were saying the same thing about Ronald Reagan, who was, you know, 73, and age was very different then. And they said, \u2018You know, he\u2019s not capable of carrying out another term.\u2019 He won 49 states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lichtman said he was leaning toward Biden in the spring and hadn\u2019t \u201cmade a final prediction,\u201d but he dismissed anyone talking about Biden\u2019s weaknesses as tyros and dilettantes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these pundits and pollsters and analysts that you see on all the cable channels and all the networks have no track record in predicting elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if they come on and they claim they know how this debate is going to affect the outcome of elections, they have no idea. It\u2019s sports talk radio. It may be entertaining, but it has no scientific basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Should Democrats replace Biden? Hear what historian thinks\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pt8eRZTas_Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The problem with academic logic is the problem with conducting all elections as if they were done on paper: Yes, most presidential contests fall within these parameters, but there are outlying events that supersede even the most stable of models.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday was one of those events.<\/p>\n<p>Consider that the Trump campaign put out a 90-second ad that was nothing more than Biden talking \u2014 or attempting to talk \u2014 during the debate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Needless to say, the drugs didn\u2019t work. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3lYHnU476w\">pic.twitter.com\/3lYHnU476w<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrumpWarRoom\/status\/1806555571937591578?\">June 28, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, debates <em>are<\/em> usually snorefests in which carefully rehearsed talking points are crammed into two-ish minutes of vague promises that emphasize tone over substance, and they usually have no effect on a race or the prolonged perception of an individual.<\/p>\n<p>The only time I can ever think of where a presidential or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">vice presidential debate<\/a> forever altered the image of a candidate was the vice presidential debate of 1988 \u2014 somewhat before my time, but one that still gets talked about, since Vice President Dan Quayle\u2019s legacy as an underprepared lightweight was cemented when he compared his level of experience in the Senate to that of John F. Kennedy when he was elected president.<\/p>\n<p>His opponent, Michael Dukakis running mate Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dick-morris-harris-wins-second-democratic-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lloyd Bentsen<\/a> of Texas, promptly destroyed him for even daring to make the comparison:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cSenator, You\u2019re No Jack Kennedy\u201d (1988)<\/p>\n<p>In the vice presidential debate, Dan Quayle sought to dismiss questions about his youth by saying he had \u201cas much experience as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd Bentsen responded: \u201cYou\u2019re no Jack Kennedy.\u201d (5\/10) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8NOUBemkNt\">pic.twitter.com\/8NOUBemkNt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 America 2100 (@America_2100) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/America_2100\/status\/1806761200757166215?\">June 28, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That moment still gets raised now and then despite the fact we\u2019re 36 years removed from it. Nothing else in that debate was that horrible for Quayle \u2014 but the sting left a scar he could never quite hide during the remainder of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-arizona-state-rep-issues-call-to-withhold-states-electoral-college-votes-to-joe-biden-due-to-significant-evidence-of-fraud\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Arizona State Rep Issues Call to Withhold State&#039;s Electoral College Votes to Joe Biden Due to Significant Evidence of Fraud\">political career<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>OK, now think of that moment for 90 minutes straight every time the leader of the free world opened his mouth on Thursday \u2014 and, at times, when he was merely being quiet.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Joe Biden looks like a deer staring straight into oncoming headlights at the CNN Presidential Debate. Idk how he makes it through this debate. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DJEjCUJ3qH\">https:\/\/t.co\/DJEjCUJ3qH<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SBMDQCLJCV\">pic.twitter.com\/SBMDQCLJCV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Waffles Sensei \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8\ud83e\uddc7\ud83e\udd77\ud83c\udffb (@UserInOurMidst) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UserInOurMidst\/status\/1806498157775196246?\">June 28, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And the effect this has, according to Lichtman\u2019s \u201c13 keys\u201d model? \u201cZero,\u201d to quote the guy himself.<\/p>\n<p>You can regurgitate your \u201c13 keys\u201d and say that everyone who ignores them is on par with a sports radio caller who absolutely knows that the backup quarterback is the guy to start this week because he played for two years on the JV team in high school.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is the \u201cincredible hubris,\u201d to use the Bloomberg report\u2019s words, of modeling the race along a set series of points that gives more or less equal weight to all and, perhaps most importantly, refuses to acknowledge that data might arise outside of that set which upends the whole model.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what we witnessed last week. Lichtman is right that replacing Biden at this juncture would be \u201ca huge mistake\u201d \u2014 but that\u2019s only because you\u2019re damned if you don\u2019t, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hillary-clinton-replace-kamala-harris-saves-biden-according-wapo-columnist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you\u2019re more damned if you do<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A fight over the candidacy at the Democratic National Convention amid an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jamaal-bowman-responds-massive-loss-makes-situation-look-worse-will-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extremist revolt on the Israel-Hamas war within the party<\/a>, coupled with what would be a growing scandal over what the president\u2019s enablers knew about his obvious incapacity of mental faculties and when they knew it, would overtake any reinvigoration that a new candidate might bring.<\/p>\n<p>As bad as it might be, the Democrats\u2019 best bet still, alas, seems like carrying this semi-sentient lump of flesh over the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>However, to say that nothing changed after Thursday\u2019s debate because nothing generally does change after presidential debates is to ignore the singular nature of <em>this<\/em> debate and what it said about a president who, to beat expectations, merely had to remain cogent and awake for the entire night \u2014 and failed so badly that insiders immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-cnns-van-jones-drops-biden-wants-race-debate-failure-didnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wanted to throw the guy overboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is why you don\u2019t bring in academics to try to convince you reality is just not so, even when they claim to have a 13-point scale they can use to prove reality isn\u2019t real.
