Known controversially as the &#8220;butcher of Tehran,&#8221;\u2063 Raisi&#8217;s presidency\u200b ended abruptly, leading to this upcoming electoral\u2062 decision.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_79\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Iran <\/a>will be having a runoff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>election<\/a> between reformist lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian and ultraconservative Saeed Jalili on July 5 to determine who the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>president<\/a> will be.<\/p>\n<p>None of the four candidates running on the ballot Friday were able to clinch more than 50% of the vote in Friday&rsquo;s election, a requirement for winning the presidency. Pezeshikan collected 42.5% of the vote, and Jalili came in second place with 38.6%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The election was prompted by the death of late President Ebrahim Raisi, who died on May 19 in a helicopter crash. Known as the &ldquo;butcher of Tehran,&rdquo; Ebrahim was responsible for executing hundreds of political prisoners during the 1980s before being elected president in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>With the Iranian people jaded by the integrity of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>democracy<\/a>, this past election boasted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-californias-rebuke-of-the-far-left-reverberate-across-the-nation-in-2022\/\" title=\"Will California\u2019s Rebuke of the Far-Left Reverberate Across the Nation in 2022?\">lowest turnout rates<\/a> since the Islamic Republic was created in 1979. A total of 24 million voters cast their ballot, a 40% turnout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to bolster Jalili&rsquo;s chances of winning, two conservative candidates dropped out days before Friday&rsquo;s election. Meanwhile, Pezeshkian was the only reformist candidate approved to run by the Guardian Council after it prevented dozens of contenders from appearing on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Sina Toossi, an Iran analyst and senior fellow at the Center for International Policy in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Washington, D.C.<\/a>, told CNN that Pezeshkian may have been permitted to run in the election only as a way of boosting voter turnout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This move could be seen as a strategy to create a more dynamic and engaging election process, thereby encouraging greater public participation,&rdquo; Toossi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/29\/middleeast\/iran-presidential-election-runoff-inconclusive-first-round-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told <\/a>CNN.<\/p>\n<p>If elected to the presidency, Pezeshkian would have a more moderate approach to the country&rsquo;s governance and could improve Iran&rsquo;s relations with Western states; whereas Jalili has a history of being uncompromising with his dealings with Western powers, thus potentially escalating tensions surrounding Iran&rsquo;s nuclear program and its involvement in the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran&#8217;s presidential runoff on July 5 will see reformist Masoud Pezeshkian face ultraconservative Saeed Jalili.
