Before and after a debate, where President Biden&#8217;s performance was widely criticized as demonstrating his aging, Newsom was actively engaging with the media, both defending Biden and subtly positioning himself as a future leader. News coverage the next \u200cday expressed widespread concern within the Democratic Party about Biden\u2019s ability to\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mitch-mcconnell-defends-health-after-freezing-incidents-im-completely-recovered\/\" title=\"McConnell defends health post freezing incidents: &#039;Fully recovered&#039;\">continue leading effectively<\/a>.\u2062 Newsom, seen as being in the wings as\u200d a potential successor, portrayed loyalty to Biden yet hinted at readiness to step \u200din if needed.\u2062 This situation\u2062 unfolds amid Democrats&#8217; broader anxieties about the upcoming election and Biden&#8217;s campaign viability.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>California&rsquo;s far-left governor spent the hour before Thursday night&rsquo;s debate in the media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qK1lCdjUaY8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spin room<\/a> ostensibly cheerleading for a president he knows he is about to replace, either in four years or four months.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is it,&rdquo; Gov. Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6355796845112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told <\/a>reporters ahead of the primetime event, going after former President Donald Trump more than promoting President Joe Biden. &ldquo;This is liberalism versus illiberalism.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is very sobering for me and I hope for the American people,&rdquo; Newsom added.<\/p>\n<p>What was more sobering, however, was when the 81-year-old incumbent took the stage and put his senility on display. Here are some of the headlines Americans woke up to Friday morning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New York Times: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/28\/us\/biden-trump-debate-voter-reaction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&lsquo;It&rsquo;s Frightening&rsquo;: Democratic Voters Worried by Biden&rsquo;s Struggles in Debate<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Washington Post: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/06\/28\/presidential-debate-reactions-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats panic over Biden&rsquo;s debate performance, doubt his future<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Politico: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/06\/27\/biden-debate-opening-concerns-00165595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dems freak out over Biden&rsquo;s debate performance: &lsquo;Biden is toast&rsquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Newsweek: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/joe-biden-stumbles-during-debate-six-moments-that-hurt-president-1918548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joe Biden Stumbles During Debate: Six Moments That Hurt the President<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Trump campaign was quick to capitalize on Biden&rsquo;s poor performance with an ad highlighting some of the president&rsquo;s worst moments.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Immediately after the debate ended, CNN&rsquo;s John King noted &ldquo;a deep, a wide and a very aggressive panic&rdquo; engulfing the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It started minutes into the debate and it continues right now,&rdquo; King said. &ldquo;It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-hosts-sound-alarm-on-bidens-debate-performance-not-just-panic-its-pain-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"CNN hosts sound alarm on Biden\u2019s debate performance: \u2018Not just panic, it\u2019s pain\u2019 - Washington Examiner\">involves party strategists<\/a>. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-lawmaker-who-voted-against-ag-paxtons-impeachment-files-resolution-to-reform-process\/\" title=\"Texas lawmaker files resolution to reform impeachment process after voting against AG Paxton&#039;s impeachment.\">involves elected officials<\/a>. It involves fundraisers. And they are having conversations about the president&rsquo;s performance which they think was dismal.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Some of those conversations,&rdquo; King added, &ldquo;include &lsquo;should we go to the White House and ask the president to step aside?&rsquo; Other conversations are about &lsquo;should prominent Democrats go public with that call?&#8217;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CNN&#8217;s John King reflects on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CNNDebate?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CNNDebate<\/a>: &#8220;This was a game-changing debate&hellip;there is a deep a wide and a very aggressive panic in the Democratic Party. Newsom was immediately swarmed by reporters following the 90-minute spectacle &mdash; glowing in the aftermath of Biden&rsquo;s debacle.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Are you going to be the next Democratic nominee?&rdquo; an Israeli reporter asked Newsom while surrounded by journalists. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No, our nominee is Joe Biden,&rdquo; said the governor, clearly trying not to laugh.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I just asked Governor Gavin Newsome: are you going to be the next democratic nominee? That&rsquo;s his answer, while he&rsquo;s glowing &#128071;&#127997; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/W3JjsNtS0h\">pic.twitter.com\/W3JjsNtS0h<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; &#1504;&#1512;&#1497;&#1492; &#1511;&#1512;&#1488;&#1493;&#1505; Neria Kraus (@NeriaKraus) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NeriaKraus\/status\/1806529228835303448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Newsom went on to sit down with MSNBC to continue pretending Biden is cognitively capable for the job, let alone the remaining four-month campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The president has delivered,&rdquo; Newsom said. &ldquo;We need to deliver for him at this moment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Alex Wagner presses Gov. Gavin Newsom on questions about whether Biden should step down.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom: &ldquo;You don&rsquo;t turn your back because of one performance.  What kind of party does that?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This president has delivered.  We need to deliver for him at this moment.&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/J5G9XGNYWn\">pic.twitter.com\/J5G9XGNYWn<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&mdash; MSNBC (@MSNBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSNBC\/status\/1806528586007953574?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Newsom, however, has spent much of the last year lining himself up as Biden&rsquo;s successor, either two years out of the governor&rsquo;s mansion in 2028 or as the substitute candidate in the scenario that the president does decide to step aside. Last fall, Newsom participated in a Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/12\/01\/why-gop-voters-saw-this-weeks-debate-differently-than-desantis-superfans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debate <\/a>with Florida Republican Governor and then-presidential candidate Ron DeSantis to offer a preview of a potential race to come. The California governor went to China about a month prior and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/china-xi-jinping-california-govenor-gavin-newsom-climate-change-rcna121841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">met <\/a>with Chinese President Xi Jinping. <\/p>\n<p>And here is footage of the California governor taking a stroll around the White House two summers ago while President Biden was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/923448\/white-house-hunting-newsom-visits-while-biden-is-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overseas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Whether Democrats still have time to replace Biden on the ticket remains an open question. Republicans are ready to respond with litigation against the effort four months from Election Day. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If Joe Biden were to withdraw at any point before the Democratic National Convention, it would be up to the delegates at the DNC to pick a new nominee,&rdquo; the Daily Mail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13556445\/joe-biden-legal-counter-fight-election-dropout.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> last week. &ldquo;But from there, they can expect legal challenges from Republicans looking to prevent any other Democratic nominee from getting on the ballot in certain states.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Heritage Oversight Project has targeted three critical swing states where Democrats would be unable to replace Biden, including Georgia, Nevada, and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom, however, has continued to throw cold water on the idea of replacing the president while allowing his behavior on the media circuit speak for itself. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;From my humble perspective,&rdquo; Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2024\/06\/27\/biden-trump-first-presidential-debate\/would-newsom-replace-biden-00165669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said <\/a>last night, &ldquo;this is not about style.
