However, Trump\u2062 had specified that he condemned\u2063 neo-Nazis and white nationalists, and stated that there were &#8220;very \u2064fine people on both sides&#8221;\u200c referring to other protesters not involved in the extremist groups. \u2064This\u200b claim by Biden has previously been used \u200bin his campaign\u2062 and fact-checked by multiple sources, including CNN host Jake Tapper, highlighting \u200cthat Trump was not referring to the extremist groups as \u2064&#8221;fine\u2062 people.&#8221; The debate underscored ongoing controversy \u2064and \u2063differing interpretations of Trump&#8217;s remarks.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During Thursday\u2019s presidential debate, Biden accused Trump of calling neo-Nazis \u201cvery fine people,\u201d repeating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sitting-members-of-congress-and-more-commemorate-ferguson-police-shooting-by-lying-about-it\/\" title=\"Sitting Members Of Congress \u2014 And More \u2014 Commemorate Ferguson Police Shooting By Lying About It\">long-debunked claim<\/a> regarding Trump\u2019s remarks following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcauliffe-falsely-claimed-youngkin-holding-event-with-trump-night-before-election\/\" title=\"McAuliffe Falsely Claimed Youngkin Holding Event With Trump Night Before Election\">white supremacist rally<\/a> in Charlottesville. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Trump] said, \u2018I think there are fine people on both sides,\u2019\u201d Biden claimed at Thursday\u2019s debate. \u201cWhat American president would ever say Nazis coming out of fields carrying torches, saying the same antisemitic bile, carrying swastikas, are fine people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s claim centers on Trump\u2019s remarks following a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/08\/14\/charlottesville-shows-blue-lives-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2017 Charlottesville rally<\/a>, which involved protests and counter-protests over the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue from a park. The protests ended violently when a self-proclaimed \u201cwhite nationalist\u201d drove his car into the crowd, killing one and injuring 19. <\/p>\n<p>With the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">corporate media<\/a>, the claim that Trump called neo-Nazis \u201cvery fine people\u201d spread shortly after the events, despite Trump condemning them outright. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides,\u201d Trump said of the Charlottesville protesters and counter-protesters in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?432633-1\/president-trump-news-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news conference days<\/a> after the events. \u201cI\u2019m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden has previously made this claim a mainstay of his campaign, featuring it in a campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/HHbTy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advertisement<\/a> and in his <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/GAKxB\">speech accepting<\/a> the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.<\/p>\n<p>However, the claim has been fact-checked by multiple sources.  <\/p>\n<p>CNN host Jake Tapper, who served as a moderator for the debate, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rncresearch\/status\/1806505629311185190?s=46\">previously debunked<\/a> the claim. He clarified Trump was referring to other protesters.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNow elsewhere, in those remarks, [Trump] did condemn neo-Nazis and white supremacists,\u201d Tapper said in a 2019 CNN clip. \u201cSo he\u2019s not saying that the neo-Nazis and white supremacists are very fine people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Seven years after the corporate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&#038;source=web&#038;rct=j&#038;opi=89978449&#038;url=https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2017\/08\/trump-defends-white-nationalist-protesters-some-very-fine-people-on-both-sides\/537012\/&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjLnZL6qf2GAxVQM1kFHbrYCH4QFnoECA8QAQ&#038;usg=AOvVaw1qxC2FfeP4ye-PSkR4reW1\">media<\/a> ran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2017\/08\/16\/president-trump-calls-white-supremacists-very-fine-people-blames-charlottesville-on-both-sides-in-bizarre-trump-tower-tirade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wild<\/a> with the false claim, Snopes stepped in last week to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/trump-very-fine-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rate<\/a> Biden\u2019s comments as \u201cfalse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a news conference after the rally protesting the planned removal of a Confederate statue, Trump did say there were \u2018very fine people on both sides,\u2019 referring to the protesters and the counterprotesters,\u201d added Snopes writer Taija PerryCook. \u201cHe said in the same statement he wasn\u2019t talking about neo-Nazis and white nationalists, who he said should be \u2018condemned totally.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither moderator fact-checked Biden during the debate. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Monroe Harless is a summer intern at The Federalist.
