Moreover, the article reflects on \u200cthe broader implications of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-governor-encourages-people-to-call-police-on-neighbors-violating-covid-orders\/\" title=\"Oregon Governor Encourages People To Call Police On Neighbors Violating COVID Orders\">health crisis<\/a>, suggesting that it \u2064could be a wake-up call for more decisive action to resolve the homelessness issue in\u200b California.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/%20\"><span>Samuel Short<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 27, 2024 at 6:26pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The homeless problem in California is not just one of drug abuse or crime \u2014 it is one of public health, as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/shigella-outbreak-santa-clara-county\/3574304\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KNTV reported<\/a> a Shigella outbreak in Santa Clara County, with nine confirmed cases and 21 more suspected cases among the homeless as of Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials in California have advised the public to avoid bathing in or drinking the water from the Guadalupe River downstream from Highway 85, where multiple homeless encampments are located.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/shigella\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20377529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Mayo Clinic<\/a>, Shigella infection, or shigellosis, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-data-for-masked-vs-unmasked-counties-would-be-on-every-front-page-if-it-showed-a-different-result\/\" title=\"This Data For Masked Vs Unmasked Counties Would Be On Every Front Page, If It Showed a Different Result\">highly contagious<\/a>. It\u2019s spread by coming into contact with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/can-now-run-classic-1993-video-game-doom-gut-bacteria-big-catch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacteria<\/a> from the stool of someone who\u2019s infected.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line: Homeless people are defecating in the river and spreading illness to other homeless people who use that river for drinking water and bathing.<\/p>\n<p>Now health officials are warning the public to keep their distance to avoid it spreading further.<\/p>\n<p>The San Jose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2024\/06\/25\/shigella-outbreak-grows-with-cases-in-homeless-encampments-along-guadalupe-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercury News quoted<\/a> Dr. Monika Roy, assistant health officer and communicable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/oj-simpsons-cause-death-confirmed-debilitating-painful-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disease<\/a> controller for Santa Clara County, as saying that while Shigella is only fatal in \u201crare cases,\u201d the public is advised to avoid that part of the Guadalupe River.<\/p>\n<p>Given the highly contagious nature of Shigella, Roy said this should be done \u201cout of an abundance of caution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roy added testing the water for Shigella would be of \u201climited value,\u201d explaining, \u201cWhen you have a body of water like a river, there is less data on infection transmission in flowing bodies of water, and there\u2019s certainly not the same mechanisms to remediate that you might have in, say, a backyard pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are liberal leaders enabling the homeless crisis?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While this development is stomach-churning, it is not unexpected in the saga that is California\u2019s ever-present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-newsom-boldly-claims-california-national-model-homelessness-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homeless problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/housing\/homelessness\/2024\/01\/california-homeless-point-in-time-count-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported 181,399 homeless in California<\/a>, 28 percent of the total homeless population in the country. This is roughly a 40-percent increase from five years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Homelessness is not just an \u201cunsightly\u201d issue to be cleaned up or swept away.<\/p>\n<p>These are real people. If left unaddressed, the general population of the state could suffer, as the Shigella problem indicates.<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"More potential cases tied to Shigella outbreak within encampments along San Jose river\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nhFACED3JG8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen   style=\"display:none\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The hurdle is <em>how<\/em> California addresses the issue. While health officials are reportedly at encampments trying to encourage better habits, this treats the symptom.<\/p>\n<p>The state tends to throw money into the void, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-04-09\/state-audit-california-fails-to-track-homeless-spending-billions-dollars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$20 billion has been spent over the past five years<\/a> to deal with it. Just last week, Skid Row residents received news of the opening of the 19-story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/skid-row-homeless-moved-new-600k-per-unit-tower-currently-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weingart Tower<\/a>, a luxurious housing development for the homeless, where units cost about $600,000 each.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the homeless will just take tendencies that made them homeless into free housing, where that culture can continue.<\/p>\n<p>Concerning Monday\u2019s Shigella outbreak, maybe its potential to impact the general public will force health officials to be more innovative and actually find a way to solve the problem.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from Our Staff:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>We who work here at The Western Journal have fought for years against Big Tech and the elites who want to shut us down and then shut America down. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Make no mistake \u2014 nothing will be the same after November 2024.
