(AP photo\/Mike Catalini)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sarlo did praise the budget for including the largest surplus he has seen in his years in state government, totaling $6.5 billion, along with full funding for both public pensions and the state\u2019s K-12 funding formula.<\/p>\n<p>Introduced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democratic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democratic<\/a>-led state Senate Budget Committee, the budget proposal includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>tax<\/a> increases on high-earning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>businesses<\/a> and allocates billions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>education<\/a> and transit.<\/p>\n<p>It comes just four days before the constitutional requirement to pass a balanced budget by July 1.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/phil-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Phil Murphy<\/a> (D-NJ) proposed a billion dollars in new taxes on businesses earning over $10 million, aiming to support New Jersey Transit in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s transit system has often used capital funds for day-to-day operations, which has restricted resources available for broader system improvements.<\/p>\n<p>However, trade organizations and businesses opposed such increases. <\/p>\n<p>Tom Bracken, the head of the state Chamber of Commerce, questioned why the state would want to penalize \u201cits most profitable customers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing in the state of New Jersey is taking our largest companies \u2026 and we are penalizing them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Michele Siekerka, president and CEO of the New Jersey Business &#038; Industry Association, said the higher taxes would hinder the state\u2019s economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a sad day today when we have to report that our New Jersey policymakers could not do better by New Jersey business and our largest job creators,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With an increase from the current 9% to 11.5%, this proposed tax would impact an estimated 600 companies.<\/p>\n<p>Critics are skeptical that lawmakers will allow this increase to be limited to five years, arguing that the state would become reliant on these funds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Jersey legislators have moved forward with a $56.6 billion budget for 2025, up 4.2% from this year.
