The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is now taking\u200c steps to address these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supply-chain-bottlenecks-may-cause-christmas-tree-shortage-report-says\/\" title=\"Supply Chain Bottlenecks May Cause Christmas Tree Shortage, Report Says\">exorbitant rates<\/a>, with plans to vote on reforms on July 18. According to a recent FCC report, this vote will seek to significantly reduce the costs of phone and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fauci-ing-new-dating-trend-demands-singles-dump-partners-who-dont-take-covid-seriously\/\" title=\"\u2018Fauci-ing\u2019: New Dating Trend Demands Singles Dump Partners Who Don\u2019t Take COVID Seriously\">video calls<\/a> for incarcerated individuals. Currently, a 15-minute \u2063call can cost up to $11.35\u2062 or $12.10, depending on the prison&#8217;s \u200bsize. Now, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/FCC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Federal Communications Commission<\/a> is seeking reform as early as July 18.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-403506A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>report<\/a> released Wednesday by the FCC, the organization revealed it will soon \u201cvote to end exorbitant phone video call rates that have burdened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/prisons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>incarcerated people<\/a> and their families for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, a 15-minute conversation from within the walls of a large prison would cost the caller $11.35, or $12.10 if the call was made from a prison with less than 1,000 people. New regulations could drop these prices down to as low as 90 cents for larger prisons and $1.35 for smaller.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3054639\/how-to-watch-trump-biden-2024-presidential-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HOW TO WATCH THE FIRST TRUMP-BIDEN 2024 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur communities benefit from incarcerated people staying connected to their loved ones,\u201d FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said. \u201cEveryone deserves communications with just and reasonable rates and practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FCC had previously instituted price caps on out-of-state prison calls, but could never lower the rates within states. In 2015, they tried to impose an in-state cap, but were sued by the telephone companies. Eventually, this suit made its way to a federal court who gave the FCC authority to regulate in-state calls.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Congress passed the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act. Once ratified, the act \u201cempowered the FCC to close the final loopholes in the communication system\u201d and impose federal regulations on all prison phone prices. It was named after Martha Wright-Reed, who, unable to afford to talk with her incarcerated grandson, <a href=\"https:\/\/ccrjustice.org\/home\/what-we-do\/our-cases\/martha-wright-v-corrections-corporation-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>sued<\/a> a private jail in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With this new act, updated rules are required from the FCC. This prospective vote will be the first serious move beyond simply pledging to shift the high-priced status quo.
