Signed into law by the governor in May, the legislation aims to crack down on\u2064 misbranding in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">food industry<\/a>. The law grants regulatory authorities, \u2062such as the Attorney General or \u200ccounty attorneys, the power to issue stop or embargo orders on offending products. Additionally, any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/la-teachers-want-free-child-care-before-returning-to-in-person-learning\/\" title=\"LA Teachers Want Free Child Care Before Returning To In-Person Learning\">food processing plants<\/a> or grocery stores with\u200c credible complaints against them will be subject to inspections by \u200cthe \u2063Department of Inspections.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 Mislabeling fake meat will carry a fine of up to $10,000 in Iowa starting July 1.<\/p>\n<p>New regulations under Senate File 2391, which the governor signed into law in May, restrict misbranding food products as egg or meat. Violations will carry a fine of $500 to $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>The regulations also allow regulatory authorities including the Attorney General or a county attorney to issue a stop order or embargo order where food product is being offered. Food processing plants or grocery stores with a \u201ccredible complaint\u201d against them will be inspected by the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, according to the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa is one of a few states that have been cracking down on alternative food products.<\/p>\n<p>Both Florida and Alabama passed legislation this year banning lab-grown meat. Tennessee and Arizona have proposed similar bills, but they haven\u2019t made it across the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>The new law will prohibit Iowa educational institutions from buying misbranded meat products.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Dawn Driscoll, R-Iowa, who carried the bill in the Senate, called it a \u201cmeat integrity\u201d bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intent of this bill was clear. We focused on the meat, and we voted for the transparent labeling for the consumers and to keep experimental lab-grown protein out of schools and the nutrition programs,\u201d Driscoll said during a hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The bill originally didn\u2019t include eggs, but the House amended it to include the misbranding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/creating-a-bodybuilding-diet\/\" title=\"Creating a Bodybuilding Diet\">egg products<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it was originally intended to focus this legislation on meat, I recognize the value and the production of eggs in Iowa,\u201d said Driscoll.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats pushed back against different aspects of the bill. Sen. Janet Peterson, D-Polk, called it \u201cgovernment interference with our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Herman Quirmbach, D-Story, took issue with the section concerning egg alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruth in labeling is certainly something that I believe in for consumer protection, but I\u2019m also concerned with consumer nutrition and there are some people who can\u2019t eat eggs because of allergies but would still need the nutritive content that might be supplied by alternative products. The other thing that is of great concern here is the price of eggs,\u201d Quirmbach said.<\/p>\n<p>Driscoll said the bill was about making sure food alternatives were labeled correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Health and Human Services will be required to request a waiver to exclude the purchase of \u201ccultivated protein food products and fabricated egg products\u201d from eligibility under the federal nutrition program.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starting July 1 in Iowa, mislabeling fake meat could result in fines up to $10,000.
