This occurred after an incident on \u2062June 3 where\u200b he reportedly\u2063 shot two\u200b NYPD\u200c officers in New York City. Mata had been smuggling guns into shelters \u200cfor illegal immigrants by concealing them in\u200d DoorDash \u2064food delivery packages to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-gop-revels-in-bidens-dc-crime-bill-flip-flop-that-infuriated-democrats\/\" title=\"House GOP revels in Biden's DC crime bill flip-flop that infuriated Democrats\">avoid metal detectors<\/a>. During his arraignement, it was\u2064 revealed that he had been charged \u200dwith two counts\u2064 of attempted murder amongst other\u2062 charges, including weapon and assault charges, after a confrontation\u200c with the\u200d officers, who tried to detain him \u2063for \u200ctraffic violations. Mata, who pleaded\u200c not guilty, claimed the shooting was\u2063 accidental and the\u200c gun was not his. The case highlighted the dangerous tactics used by the\u200c gang, including shooting at\u2064 police as a normative response \u200cmodeled\u2064 on \u200dtheir\u2064 treatment \u2064in Venezuela.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 27, 2024 at 6:48am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A hearing for an illegal Venezuelan immigrant charged with shooting two New York City police officers revealed that gang members routinely smuggle guns into shelters for illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>During an arraignment on a 20-count indictment against Bernardo Raul Castro Mata, prosecutors shared tapes made while he was in a hospital recovering from injuries after his struggle with police during his June 3 arrest.<\/p>\n<p>In the recordings, Mata, 19, said he was a member of the Tren de Aragua gang and that he worked for DoorDash delivering food to the shelters, with weapons stashed inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTren de Aragua members are smuggling firearms into city shelters in food delivery packages \u2013 that way they don\u2019t have to go through the metal detectors,\u201d the recordings said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/26\/us-news\/violent-tren-de-aragua-gang-smuggles-guns-into-nyc-migrant-shelters-in-food-delivery-bags-accused-cop-shooter-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alleged gang member accused of shooting 2 NYPD officers arraigned in Queens Criminal Court\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7YlrW3OAxJc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen   style=\"display:none\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>During his arraignment, Mata was slapped with two counts of attempted murder in the first and second degrees, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/queensda.org\/bernardo-raul-castro-mata-arraigned-on-indictment-charges-of-first-degree-attempted-murder-for-shooting-two-police-officers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release from the Queens (NY) DA\u2019s office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On June 3, Officers Christopher Abreu and Richard Yarusso sought to detain Mata for driving the wrong way on a one-way street and not wearing a helmet while on an unregistered motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>Mata ran away, the release said. After police sought to put him in handcuffs, Mata is alleged to have pulled a gun from a bag he was carrying and shot Yarusso in the lower chest \u201cat point blank range.\u201d. Yarusso\u2019s protective vest stopped the bullet.<\/p>\n<p>A second shot hit Abreu in the upper right thigh.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is immigration the biggest issue of the 2024 election?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Abreu then fired at Mata, hitting him near his ankle. Officers were then able to handcuff Mata.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn attempt on the lives of two police officers simply making a traffic stop should offend every New Yorker,\u201d Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the four attempted murder charges against him, Mata was charged with two counts of attempted assault in the first degree; two counts of attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer; two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree; four counts of assault in the second degree; resisting arrest; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eight-violent-attacks-in-nyc-subway-over-weekend\/\" title=\"Eight Violent Attacks in NYC Subway over Weekend\">obstructing governmental administration<\/a> in the second degree; reckless driving; driving a vehicle the wrong way on a one way roadway; operating or riding upon a motorcycle without a helmet; and operating or driving a motorcycle without proper license plates.<\/p>\n<p>Police also recovered a loaded .380-caliber handgun and three.380-caliber shell casings from the scene as well as four 9 mm casings.<\/p>\n<p>Mata entered a plea of not guilty, saying the gun was not his and that it went off accidentally, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/bernardo-raul-castro-mata-nypd-officers-shot-east-elmhurst-queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, a prosecutor read a statement Mata made to police that said, \u201cI knew there was a gun in the bag. When the cops stopped me, I ran because I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the hearing, it was also revealed that Mata said it was normal for \u00a0Tren de Aragua members to shoot at police because in Venezuela, police shoot at gang members for small offenses.<\/p>\n<p>NYPD officers showed up en masse for the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who attacks a police officer needs to be prosecuted, sentenced and then deported,\u201d PBA President Patrick Hendry said.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
