Trump II: &#8216;His Anxiety About the Election Is Real&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/%20\"><span>Bryan Chai<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 26, 2024 at 12:37pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Former President Barack Obama is ready and willing to do what he can to help the Democrat incumbent stave off a fierce Republican challenger in the 2024 general election \u2014 but he\u2019s still pretty worried about it, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>A fascinating Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/obama-biden-2024-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from New York Magazine actually peeled back some layers from Obama\u2019s typically cool-as-a-cucumber demeanor and revealed a former president who may very well see some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-york-shows-biden-scary-numbers-trump-surges-2024-election-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing on the wall<\/a> when it comes to the presumed 2024 general election rematch between President Joe Biden and presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>And the writing doesn\u2019t have many kind words for Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The report first broaches the topic of the outside perception of Obama and Biden\u2019s sometimes-frosty relationship.<\/p>\n<p>In short, while some Democrats see and feel a strain between the two, many of those Democrats are also assuming that Obama has some grand plan to boost his former vice president. The report described it as a \u201ccontradictorily\u201d-type of belief.<\/p>\n<p>The report states: \u201cAs the rumor mill had it, Obama was especially unnerved about the race, which Biden was losing, if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-shows-signs-swing-state-domination-new-poll-will-give-biden-nightmares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swing-state polls<\/a> were to be believed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only that, the 44th president had supposedly urged the 46th to install a trusted senior adviser or two at his campaign headquarters in Wilmington \u2014 someone like Obama\u2019s 2008 campaign manager David Plouffe \u2014 rather than keeping his inner circle intact in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the whispers circulated, so did the confusion: <em>Obama\u2019s freaking out? And he wants Biden to hire Plouffe to fix the campaign?<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>The report then notes that the root of Obama\u2019s \u201canxiety\u201d comes from a familiar place, at least in Democrat circles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you think Obama can actually influence the election?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThough \u2018his anxiety about the election is real,\u2019 in the words of one Obama friend, the ex-president\u2019s concerns sounded a lot like those of other top Democrats, according to others who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-is-open-new-york-is-closed-and-ny-has-more-covid-deaths\/\" title=\"Florida Is Open, New York Is Closed, And NY Has More COVID Deaths\">\u2019ve spoken<\/a> with him,\u201d the report notes. \u201cThose who are in regular touch with Obama say these nerves are not a reflection of any particular angst about Biden or his team but of the broader reality:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country is closely divided, the media landscape is fractured, and Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-gets-great-news-georgia-just-2-days-atlanta-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may very well win<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObama has always acknowledged to friends and worried supporters in search of reassurance that the race is likely to be a nail-biter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet he has remained careful about not evincing any specific concern or complacency about the campaign, aware that reports about his feelings are unlikely to help the Democratic cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report then quickly adds: \u201cNone of which is to say he\u2019s exactly holding back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the report outlines a number of ways in which Obama has become \u201cincreasingly involved\u201d in Biden\u2019s re-election bid, despite an early inclination not to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s race has been a fundamentally different story from the start,\u201d the report states. \u201cWithout having to scale a hobbling primary campaign into a national one amid a pandemic, and with the benefit of three years of incumbency, Biden and his aides saw little reason to rely on Obama so heavily again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObama spoke occasionally to both the president and some of his top aides when they had questions or he was interested in hearing updates, but he mostly sat back and focused on his own foundation, giving paid speeches, and working as a producer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was confident that the Democrats knew where to find him whenever they needed him. By late 2023, as the rematch between Biden and Trump became obvious, they came calling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once the Democrats came to Obama, the former president was quick to lend his thoughts on \u201ccampaign mechanics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Some Obama focuses include: More field offices on the campaign trail, tactics to target young, black and Latino voters, and having Obama more \u201cin the loop\u201d with Biden\u2019s thinking.)<\/p>\n<p>And while Obama will clearly continue to whisper these thoughts in Biden\u2019s ear (the piece is actually entitled \u201cWhat Obama Is Whispering to Biden\u201d), the report expects the 44th president to become a far more public figure \u201conce Election day is in view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of Obama\u2019s plans and whatever he may be whispering to Biden, the two of them have their work cut out for them, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/developing-trump-enters-landslide-victory-territory-blowout-new-rasmussen-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state of polling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first major test for Biden and his aides \u2014 including Obama, apparently \u2014 will come Thursday, when he and Trump will face off on CNN for the first of two scheduled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-wins-crucial-coin-flip-picks-curious-debate-advantage-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presidential debates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
