The loss of an incumbent delivered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3059302\/bowman-ouster-spells-trouble-house-progressives-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>huge blow<\/a> to House progressives, with the contest raising concerns among Democrats that disaster looms for their other vulnerable candidates who, like Bowman, share anti-Israel sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>For Republicans, who have been mostly united in throwing their full support behind Israel, Bowman\u2019s defeat is a sign that the Democratic conference\u2019s fracturing over the war between the Jewish state and Hamas could boost their chances of keeping and expanding their House majority in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBowman is a reflection of the Democrat party across the Nation and the first of many swift losses,\u201d Rep. Anthony D\u2019Esposito (R-NY), whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/ratings\/house-race-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>race<\/a> is considered a \u201ctoss-up,\u201d told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThe next will be Laura Gillen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chadpergram\/status\/1805954942663885265?s=46&#038;t=MTrDtzIBhaRIRlYG2dC8oQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>equated<\/a> Bowman\u2019s loss to the anticipated defeat of Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), who still awaits a full count of the ballots to see if he lost to GOP challenger John McGuire, who is leading him in votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way to stop a bully is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-lankford-slams-joe-biden-on-cybersecurity\/\" title=\"Sen. Lankford slams Joe Biden on cybersecurity\">push back hard<\/a>,\u201d Van Orden told Fox News. \u201cThe same thing we did with Bob Good. Bob Good will not be in this Congress next time because he was a bully. He needs to go. It\u2019s time to govern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t govern when we have people acting like Bob Good,\u201d the Wisconsin Republican continued. \u201cJamaal Bowman, he\u2019s not going to be here anymore. He\u2019s now [the] first member of the Squad. He\u2019s gone. You know why? Because he\u2019s so radical. Even the left got rid of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many GOP members will not be sad to see Bowman go, particularly in the wake of the congressman\u2019s scandal when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2436560\/jamaal-bowman-faces-ethics-complaint-after-fire-alarm-incident\/\">pulled a fire alarm<\/a> that disrupted a House vote on a critical spending deal last fall. Several House Republicans took to X on Tuesday night to poke fun at Bowman\u2019s loss.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lawler4ny\/status\/1805777298378895824?s=46&#038;t=Gepuixs8AegS3Gcy3aXO2g\">posted<\/a> a photo of a fire alarm and said, \u201cIn case of emergency \u2026 Bye @JamaalBowmanNY!\u201d Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) shared a still photo from security footage of Bowman pulling the fire alarm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBREAKING NEWS!!! Jamal Bowman wins renomination. Oh wait \u2026 false alarm,\u201d Crenshaw <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dancrenshawtx\/status\/1805954556783669395?s=46&#038;t=Gepuixs8AegS3Gcy3aXO2g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>posted<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<p>Even some House Democrats, including those who belong to the Congressional Progressive Caucus, are not torn up about Bowman\u2019s defeat. When asked if Bowman\u2019s loss is a loss to the Democratic conference, one House Democrat, who asked for anonymity in order to speak freely, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cNot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re a progressive, whether you are a New Dem, whether you\u2019re a Blue Dog, I want people with seriousness of purpose around here,\u201d the Democrat said.<\/p>\n<p>While Bowman\u2019s loss can be attributed to redistricting and Latimer\u2019s decades of political work in the district, some Democrats have lamented that their progressive colleague lost his race largely due to the outside spending in New York\u2019s 16th District. <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) blamed her fellow progressive\u2019s loss on the \u201cstaggering price tag\u201d put on unseating Bowman from AIPAC\u2019s \u201cfar-right\u201d allies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAIPAC and their allies \u2014 backed by far-right Donald Trump megadonors \u2014 poured a tidal wave of cash into this primary race showing us just how desperate these billionaire extremists are in their attempts to buy our democracy, promote their own gain, and silence the voices of progress and justice,\u201d Bush said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThese same extremists are coming to St. Louis. \u2026 But let me be clear: St. Louis will not be silenced or sold out,\u201d the congresswoman added, saying that her district is \u201cnot for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Large expenditures led by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other pro-Israel groups were mostly concentrated on anti-Bowman ads and ultimately shattered fundraising records \u2014 and AIPAC has vowed to do the same to several other progressives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For progressive leaders, the idea that spending in the 16th District\u2019s Democratic primary totaled over $20.5 million should be a wake-up call for Democratic voters and the caucus itself. Progressive caucus Whip Greg Casar (D-TX) told reporters that he blamed Bowman\u2019s defeat on the \u201cunprecedented\u201d spending from AIPAC and other big-business groups that don\u2019t represent the progressives\u2019 districts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Mr. Bowman\u2019s race opens up the floodgates to potentially tens of millions of dollars being spent in primaries, tens of millions of dollars that aren\u2019t necessarily talking about, in their ads, the issues that that big interest cares about, but about something else,\u201d Casar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t take this as a red alert moment, that there\u2019s historic and unprecedented spending in one congressional primary, we should take a bigger lesson away from this, then,\u201d the caucus whip added.\u00a0 \u201cOh, is this about this one part of the country, or this one other part of the country, or this one particular member? There\u2019s a bigger issue at play as it relates to how our elections work. \u2026 What happens if voters just can\u2019t hear both sides because one side just is able to have virtually infinite resources?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-issues-injunction-blocking-several-directives-from-l-a-countys-new-controversial-d-a\/\" title=\"Judge Issues Injunction Blocking Several Directives From L.A. County\u2019s New Controversial D.A.\">progressive leader<\/a> in the upper chamber, pointed out that Bowman received 84% of the vote in the Bronx, \u201ca working-class area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did poorly in the suburbs of Westchester and ended up with 42%,\u201d the Vermont senator said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an outrage and an insult to democracy that we maintain a corrupt campaign finance system which allows billionaire-funded super PACs to buy elections,\u201d Sanders added. \u201cAIPAC and other super PACs spent over $23 million to defeat Bowman. He spent $3 million. That is a spending gap which is virtually impossible to overcome.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>When asked if leadership should have been more involved in assisting Bowman in his primary, Casar said that he would not speak to the conversations between Bowman and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), vice chairwoman for new members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congress-has-officially-gone-gender-crazy\/\" title=\"Congress Has Officially Gone Gender Crazy\">progressive caucus<\/a>, said she anticipates many \u201cMonday morning quarterbacking\u201d about what happened in Bowman\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too early to tell if it\u2019s an isolated incident or part of a trend,\u201d Balint told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, adding that she doesn\u2019t think his loss is an \u201cindication that the electorate is not still committed\u201d to progressive ideals.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Squad Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Bush face competitive primaries in August. All three have been vocal about ending the \u201coccupation\u201d of Gaza \u2014 a common call among the Squad Democrats as the war continues in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Donors close to AIPAC, Democratic Majority for Israel, and other allied groups have cited Bush\u2019s race, in particular, as a top target for 2024. Bush is facing a challenge from St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, and her lead is growing precarious, according to recent polling.<\/p>\n<p>A poll from the Mellman Group found that Bell overcame a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000190-5299-d9a9-a3b3-d2dfee860000&#038;nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=0000014c-2414-d9dd-a5ec-34bc527c0005&#038;nlid=630318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>double-digit deficit<\/a> to lead Bush 43% to 42%. I always try to think about, \u2018Am I speaking with humanity at the center of the equation, talking with language that [is] bringing the caucus together?\u2019\u201d Balint said. \u201cWe need the votes.
