A student, Christian McGhee, \u200cwas suspended after questioning his\u2063 teacher&#8217;s\u200d use of\u2064 the word \u201calien\u201d during a\u2063 class, \u2062asking whether it referred to extraterrestrial beings or unauthorized immigrants needing green cards. This led to a \u200dchain of reactions\u200c where McGhee, \u200daccused of \u200cracism\u2063 by the teacher, was eventually suspended, despite his expression that the situation \u200dwas a misunderstanding. His situation\u200b drew the attention of the Immigration Reform Law Institute which has \u200csince filed a brief supporting him, citing how common the\u2062 usage of terms like \u201cillegal alien\u201d remains in \u2063legal and governmental contexts. Their stance and advocacy efforts are \u2062ongoing as they attempt to clear McGhee\u2019s record of the suspension, emphasizing\u200d how terms like \u201cundocumented\u201d and \u201cnon-citizen\u201d are viewed as\u2062 incorrect euphemisms in legal lexicons.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIllegal\u201d may soon be illegal if America\u2019s liberal immigration advocates get their way.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2927438\/voters-yes-theyre-illegal-violent-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>62% recently agreed<\/a> in a survey that the proper term for unauthorized border crossers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3056948\/migrant-crime-grows-as-campaign-issue-but-is-there-an-actual-spike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>\u201cillegal immigrant\u201d<\/a> or \u201cillegal alien,\u201d a fight over a teenager\u2019s innocent use of the phrase in a North Carolina high school in April is drawing major attention from key legal groups.<\/p>\n<p>The latest to join was the Washington-based <a href=\"https:\/\/irli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CM-v-Davidson-Cty-Bd-of-Ed_FILED-IRLI-AMICUS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Immigration Reform Law Institute<\/a>, which asked in a message to <em>Secrets<\/em>, \u201cIs saying \u2018illegal alien\u2019 now forbidden?\u201d The group that advocates strong border enforcement on Wednesday filed a brief in support of 16-year-old Christian McGhee.<\/p>\n<p>At issue was his request to his teacher about her use of the word \u201calien\u201d in a vocabulary quiz. <a href=\"https:\/\/libertyjusticecenter.org\/newsroom\/student-sues-school-district-after-suspension-for-using-term-illegal-alien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>He asked<\/a> if the teacher meant \u201cspace aliens or illegal aliens who need green cards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nearby Hispanic and friend of McGhee pretended to be offended. The teacher later accused McGhee of racism, and despite his mother\u2019s plea to sort out the misunderstanding, he was suspended for three days. The trauma of the case forced him to be home-schooled for the rest of the spring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/irli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CM-v-Davidson-Cty-Bd-of-Ed_FILED-IRLI-AMICUS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>In its filing,<\/a> IRLI provided documents on how common the phrases \u201cillegal,\u201d \u201cillegal alien,\u201d and others are used in law and Congress to describe border crossers.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>The group cited the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, for example, that said, \u201cThere is some confusion \u2014 not necessarily in this case but generally \u2014 regarding the proper term for non-citizens who are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/United-States\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>United States<\/a> unlawfully. The leading legal lexicographer offers the following compelling explanation: \u201cThe usual and preferable term in [American English] is illegal alien. To identify someone as an \u2018illegal alien\u2019 does not banish that person from the human race; it simply identifies the individual\u2019s immigration status.
