Trump has accepted \u2063to \u200bdebate on largely Biden&#8217;s terms, despite previously criticizing \u2064Biden&#8217;s debating skills and his overall fitness for presidency on platforms like Truth Social. He challenged Biden to\u2062 debates under any\u2063 conditions, which Biden\u2019s\u200c team responded to with offers Trump\u200b considered\u2064 unfavorable, like no live audience and controlled \u2063interruptions. However, Trump\u200b agreed, believing\u2064 that any comparison\u2062 on age, acuity, \u200dand stamina\u2063 would be in his \u2064favor. Despite concerns about Biden&#8217;s \u2062age and occasional public gaffes,\u2064 he has \u200bmanaged to perform adequately in significant moments, like the State \u200bof the \u2062Union addresses. Trump, known for leveraging debate rules to his \u2064advantage, has previously skipped debates if\u200b conditions were not to his liking, \u200dsuch as the virtual\u200d debate in 2020. Heading \u2063towards the 2024 election with a strong lead in GOP polls, Trump bypassed debates with other Republican candidates, feeling his record\u2064 spoke for itself. He eventually\u2063 clinched the\u200b GOP nomination\u200b with minor opposition from contenders like\u200b former\u200c U.N. Barnum that there is no such thing as bad publicity, a belief that served him well as a real estate developer and reality TV star, with more mixed results as a politician.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is betting that there is no such thing as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3059685\/trump-biden-pressure-voters-high-importance-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>bad debate <\/a>with President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a> at this stage in the 81-year-old\u2019s career, taking a calculated risk as he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/trump-vs-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>nurses a 1-point lead<\/a> in the national <em>RealClearPolitics <\/em>polling average. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> accepted two debates<\/a> largely on Biden\u2019s terms, including Thursday night\u2019s showdown that comes before either man is his party\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-calls-travel-lid-for-wednesday-an-hour-after-bobulinski-interview-airs\/\" title=\"Biden Calls Travel Lid for Wednesday an Hour After Bobulinski Interview Airs\">presidential nominee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrooked Joe Biden is the WORST debater I have ever faced \u2014 He can\u2019t put two sentences together!\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social in May. He often cast doubt on Biden\u2019s willingness to debate him at all. \u201cHe can\u2019t talk,\u201d he told Minnesota Republicans. \u201cHe can\u2019t walk. Can\u2019t find his way off a stage. Can\u2019t put two sentences together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/election-2024\/?utm_source=homepage&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_campaign=iowa_caucus&#038;utm_id=election2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>ELECTION 2024: FOLLOW LATEST COVERAGE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-says-will-debate-biden-anytime-rcna142140\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>challenged<\/a> Biden to debate \u201canytime, anywhere, anyplace.\u201d He couldn\u2019t be seen as backing down from that if the White House made him an offer \u2014\u00a0even one he might want to refuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they did, I\u2019m pretty sure, is that they approached me with a debate that I couldn\u2019t take,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/3056147\/trump-on-the-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner\u2019s<\/em> Byron York. \u201cDana Bash, Jake Tapper, no audience, sitting down, originally sitting down, a dead debate, turn off the mics when you\u2019re not speaking so I can\u2019t interrupt him. \u2026 They knew I wouldn\u2019t accept that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yet Trump did, in part because of his confidence that any contrast with Biden on age, acuity, and stamina will redound to the former president\u2019s benefit. Though, Trump did concede in his interview with York that he interrupted Biden too much in their first debate in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>Biden has been under increased scrutiny over his age. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>White House<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3054382\/trump-campaign-slams-biden-attempt-cheap-fakes-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>dismissed<\/a> viral clips of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nolte-the-pathetic-of-sight-of-joe-biden-lost-in-barack-obamas-crowd\/\" title=\"Nolte: The Pathetic of Sight of Joe Biden Lost in Barack Obama's Crowd\">president wandering<\/a> around or appearing infirm as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3048814\/white-house-rips-unflattering-biden-videos-cheap-fakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>cheap fakes<\/a>.\u201d Already the oldest commander in chief in history, Biden would be 86 by the end of a second term. But at 78, Trump would also reenter the Oval Office older than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ronald-reagan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ronald Reagan<\/a>, the previous age record-holder at the position, left it.<\/p>\n<p>Yet most of Biden\u2019s most memorable flubs have come in routine day-to-day events. He has generally performed acceptably in big moments, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2922723\/bidens-state-of-the-union-hushed-democratic-criticism-but-hasnt-helped-him-in-the-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>exceeding expectations<\/a> with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/state-of-the-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>State of the Union<\/a> address. Biden delivered a fairly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2910158\/state-of-the-union-2024-five-key-takeaways-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>energetic speech<\/a> after a special counsel report painted an unflattering picture of his memory.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is normally a stickler for debate ground rules. He has frequently used audience feedback and strategically timed interjections to his advantage in the past. After coming in too hot at the first debate with Biden, Trump skipped the next debate because he would not participate in a virtual event. The two did end up debating live a second time.<\/p>\n<p>With a commanding lead in the polls, Trump refused to debate his rivals for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. \u201cPeople know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate?\u201d he wrote on Truth Social. \u201cI\u2019M YOUR MAN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump won the nomination with relative ease, with only former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nikki-haley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nikki Haley<\/a>, the one candidate who clearly benefited from the Republican National Committee debates, putting up a semblance of resistance. <\/p>\n<p>Team Trump has spent the week leading up to the debate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3057927\/karoline-leavitt-cnn-anti-trump-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>sparring with CNN<\/a>, the network that is hosting it. Roughing up the debate moderators has been a proven strategy for Republicans stretching from Reagan\u2019s \u201cI paid for this microphone\u201d moment in New Hampshire in 1980 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/newt-gingrich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Newt Gingrich<\/a> winning the 2012 South Carolina primary on the heels of a tough exchange with CNN\u2019s John King.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible Trump doesn\u2019t need a big debate moment now that he is a known commodity and could benefit from the discipline the agreed-upon format imposes on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump can win the debate if he just lets Biden ramble. His best tactic would be to not interrupt Biden,\u201d Republican pollster Brent Buchanan wrote in a memo on Wednesday. \u201cI\u2019m not sure he can do that, but he\u2019d advance his cause greatly if he would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump has more recently been talking up Biden as a debater. \u201cHe beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/paul-ryan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Paul Ryan<\/a> pretty badly,\u201d he told the <em>All-In <\/em>podcast in an interview that came out last week, referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/reporter-tries-to-press-biden-on-abortion-stance\/\" title=\"Reporter Tries To Press Biden On Abortion Stance\">2012 vice presidential debate<\/a>. \u201cAnd I assume he\u2019s going to be somebody that will be a worthy debater. I would say I don\u2019t want to underestimate him.\u201d (It doesn\u2019t hurt that this doubles as a shot at Ryan, who has become an intraparty rival of Trump\u2019s.)<\/p>\n<p>But there is no question Trump is taking the stage with the expectation of beating Biden, testing another Barnum adage: \u201cI don\u2019t care what the newspapers say about me as long as they spell my name right.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President Donald Trump, who aligns with P.T.
