DeSantis announces plan to work with Publix Pharmacy to distribute COVID-19 vaccine\">pilot program<\/a> would provide lockable bags, funded by the government, for districts to use \u200dto store \u2062students\u2019 phones securely throughout the school\u200d day. \u200dDistricts are also required to develop policies governing \u2063the use of these bags. After a period of two years, \u200bdata regarding the impact of this \u200binitiative on students&#8217; mental \u200cand \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/montana-judge-sides-with-youth-activists-in-landmark-climate-change-trial\/\" title=\"Montana judge supports youth activists in groundbreaking climate trial.\">physical \u200chealth<\/a>, as well as their academic achievement, will be collected and reviewed by lawmakers. After two years, student data on mental and physical health and academic achievement would be compiled and submitted to lawmakers for review.<\/p>\n<p>Bill sponsor Sen. Ryan Aument, R-Lititz, said the legislation intends to \u201cfree\u201d kids from their phones during the day, while storing them securely and shielding schools from liability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been compelling data and research that\u2019s been done that points to the decline in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-pushes-for-20b-in-infrastructure-funding-to-go-to-electric-school-buses\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris pushes for B in infrastructure funding to go to electric school buses\">student mental health<\/a> and student academic performance, student physical health and a direct correlation and strong evidence of direct causation with the rise of smartphone access among adolescents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ron-desantis-wants-florida-to-provide-internet-to-cuba-following-government-shutdown\/\" title=\"Ron DeSantis Wants Florida To Provide Internet To Cuba Following Government Shutdown\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-this-average-american-is-voting-for-donald-trump\/\" title=\"Why This Average American Is Voting for Donald Trump\">social media<\/a> access<\/a> to adolescents,\u201d he said during a Senate Education Committee hearing on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/04\/24\/teens-and-social-media-key-findings-from-pew-research-center-surveys\/\">Pew Research Center<\/a><\/strong>, teens spent an average of 3.5 hours per day on social media in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/research\/constant-companion-a-week-in-the-life-of-a-young-persons-smartphone-use\">similar report<\/a><\/strong> from Common Sense and the University of Michigan Medicine\u2019s C.S. Mott Children\u2019s Hospital noted that children between the ages of 11 and 17 receive an average of 237 notifications per day \u2013 one-quarter of which come during school hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents\u2019 cellphone use in schools is a major issue, not just when it comes to classroom distractions, reduced student attention spans, and declining academic performance \u2013 it also negatively impacts their mental health and social skills,\u201d Aument said. \u201cThe data is clear and has confirmed what parents, teachers, and administrators are experiencing in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lindsey Williams, D-Pittsburgh, agreed with the spirit of the legislation, but said the language is too narrow because schools are only given one storage option. She cast the lone dissenting vote despite other lawmakers on the committee sharing her concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a pilot program, which means it is about learning the best way forward,\u201d said Sen.
