While said in jest, the quip seemed to contain an element of truth. <\/p>\n<p>Recently, a legal challenge has forced the popular nicotine product Zyn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/zyn-shortage-busting-users-buzz-company-halts-online-sales-rcna158183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">halt <\/a>its online sales. This development follows the FDA\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/top-news\/articles\/2024-04-04\/us-fda-issues-warning-letters-to-retailers-against-underage-sale-of-zyn-nicotine-pouches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issue <\/a>119 warnings to retailers who carry Zyn nicotine pouches for allegedly selling the product to minors. Coincidentally, these actions occurred only a few months after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/schumer-calls-for-federal-action-on-zyn-nicotine-pouches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemned<\/a> the product, imploring the FDA to investigate further.<\/p>\n<p>In light of these actions, it seems Zyn has entered the crosshairs of the FDA\u2019s jihad against nicotine consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Not too long ago in 2018, the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/133880\/download#:~:text=In%20May%202018%2C%20FDA%20issued,boxes%2C%20candy%2C%20or%20cookies.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued <\/a>a warning against flavored nicotine products, and in 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/health\/fda-warns-stores-to-stop-selling-fruity-disposable-e-cigarettes#:~:text=In%20early%202020%2C%20the%20FDA,are%20more%20popular%20with%20adults.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banned <\/a>the sale of most flavored vape pods, slashing the popular American retailer Juul\u2019s sales. A few years later, the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/fda-rescinds-juul-ban-opening-door-for-federal-clearance-acc14955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered <\/a>a halt on all Juul products, including their two remaining flavors, tobacco and menthol.<\/p>\n<p>These FDA policies destroyed Juul\u2019s business and created a massive gap in the market. Conveniently for some, there hasn\u2019t been a crackdown on disposable flavored nicotine devices from foreign countries (often China), such as Breeze Vapes and Geek Bars. They immediately took Juul\u2019s place and have faced no ban, continuing to be popular to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Zyn, a discreet flavored nicotine pouch, has grown in popularity since these bans. Enthusiasm skyrocketed last year, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/08\/business\/zyn-nicotine-pouches-sales-earnings\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">62 percent increase<\/a> in sales. Influencers on TikTok and public figures such as Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan have contributed to the surge in popularity. It\u2019s also become a staple of the trending \u201cWhite Boy Summer,\u201d which derives its name from a rap song written by actor Tom Hanks\u2019 son, Chet Hanks. \u201cWhite Boy Summer\u201d conjures nostalgia for frats, vitality, Lana Del Rey\u2019s American mythos, and the early 2000s marketing campaigns of Abercrombie &#038; Fitch and Hollister. <\/p>\n<p>Nostalgic Americana and nicotine go hand in hand. Zyns and cigarettes remind us of an active America, when the working class was strong, industry flourished, and youth culture was vibrant. Before the malaise of today\u2019s cultural stagnation, America was full of energetic and ambitious people, people who were proud of their heritage. <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d managed to maintain two entirely different, yet equally American, cultural hubs on the East and West Coasts. Our adventurous spirit had yet to be conquered, fueled by the tobacco cultivated in the great interior of our country. From the Jersey Shore to the glamorous beaches of Southern California, to be American was to be beautiful and thin with a heater in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Cigarettes are the perfect excuse for a step outside, a breath of fresh air, and, as Ann Coulter once <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnnCoulter\/status\/1369292668526813185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cgive people a 5-minute limit on conversation time, like an unobtrusive little hourglass.\u201d They allow us a sort of pensive communal moment, like the American Indian around the campfire, simultaneously easing nerves and energizing the mind. Cigarettes were the first thing Paul Simon grabbed when he \u201cwalked off to look for America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The association of nicotine with productivity and adventure isn\u2019t simply due to an American nostalgia campaign launched by artists and corporations; it\u2019s rooted in reality. <\/p>\n<p>Nicotine is a nootropic \u2014 a brain stimulant. This contributes to its addictiveness, but it\u2019s also why it\u2019s associated with vitality and energy. It can calm your nerves by producing dopamine, while simultaneously making one alert and improving memory and cognition. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6018192\/#:~:text=Preclinical%20models%20and%20human%20studies,particularly%20sensitive%20to%20nicotine's%20effects.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> published by the National Library of Medicine stated that \u201cnicotine has cognitive-enhancing effects. Attention, working memory, fine motor skills and episodic memory functions are particularly sensitive to nicotine\u2019s effects.\u201d The adverse effects of nicotine consumption are well documented, but so are the benefits. <\/p>\n<p>Contrast these benefits to the effects of marijuana \u2014 sloth, paranoia, even schizophrenia. Though marijuana is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/legal-weed-map-states\/#:~:text=The%20states%20where%20recreational%20weed,Vermont%2C%20Virginia%2C%20and%20Washington.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal<\/a> in six of the 50 states, daily marijuana consumption has outpaced that of daily alcohol consumption. An estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/health\/daily-marijuana-use-is-now-more-common-than-daily-alcohol-use-in-the-u-s-new-study-finds#:~:text=%E2%80%9CA%20good%2040%20percent%20of,Wednesday%20in%20the%20journal%20Addiction.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40 percent<\/a> of marijuana users consume daily, a trait more congruent with that of tobacco use than alcohol use, yet there are far greater dangers posed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/marylands-recreational-marijuana-market-opens-up-amid-public-health-concerns\/\" title=\"Maryland's recreational marijuana market launches despite health worries.\">excessive marijuana consumption<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/marijuana-cannabis-alcohol-drinking-daily-use-b91c2c5957fdb2d48e6616c3baa14c13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannabis-associated psychosis<\/a>. Additionally, excess marijuana use is proven to have much more debilitating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/how-teen-marijuana-use-impacts-brain-development#:~:text=The%20concentration%20of%20THC%20in,coordination%2C%20reaction%20time%20and%20judgment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">side effects<\/a>. It can affect normal brain development, leading to problems in learning, memory, coordination, reaction time, and judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Anecdotally, I can quickly recall instances where friends or classmates became losers and recluses, failed classes, got fat, and had nasty breakouts due to their routine marijuana use. Interestingly enough, my friends who smoked cigarettes and used Zyns were funny, social, beautiful, and intelligent people with strong opinions who wrote wonderful papers and were universally considered pleasant company.<\/p>\n<p>The war on nicotine could be seen as an intrusive but benevolent public health measure. However, when contrasted with increased marijuana use throughout the country, it seems monomaniacal at best and subversive at worst. Amid this war against nicotine consumption, the use of marijuana products has been legalized and popularized. People use a wide variety of smoke or vapor products to inhale the easily accessed depressant, and all sorts of edible versions are available with no interference. When I think about the FDA\u2019s concern about marketing nicotine to children, I wonder if they\u2019re aware of the readily available THC gummy bears I could buy down the street.<\/p>\n<p>It comes then as a shock that the FDA, which has been so fascistically focused on the regulation of nicotine products, would willfully ignore the unprecedented growth of a new drug market. Their goal, openly, is to eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/ctp-newsroom\/year-review-fdas-progress-tobacco-product-regulation-2023#:~:text=Guided%20by%20the%20new%20strategic,caused%20by%20tobacco%20product%20use.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eliminate<\/a> the use of tobacco products, which have far fewer behavioral side effects. Unless it isn\u2019t a concern for public health, but rather a covert war on a wily and witty young America \u2014 one that could question its leaders and write provocative essays holding them accountable for their anti-American policies. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe the FDA just doesn\u2019t know how prevalent marijuana use is or how bad it is for us. And maybe they also don\u2019t know about the many benefits of nicotine. Or maybe the government isn\u2019t altruistic.
