John Curtis, a centrist Republican from Utah, won a significant victory in a \u2063crowded\u2063 primary for\u200d a U.S. Senate\u2062 seat, outperforming a more conservative rival \u2064who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Curtis,\u2062 who \u200chas \u2064been serving Utah&#8217;s \u200d3rd\u2064 Congressional District since\u2062 2017,\u200c managed to establish\u200b a substantial lead over his closest competitor, Mayor Trent Staggs, despite Staggs receiving Trump&#8217;s endorsement just \u2062before the Utah GOP convention\u2064 in April. He is attempting to fill the Senate seat\u2064 being vacated by Sen. John Curtis (R-UT)<\/a>, a centrist <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republican<\/a>, won a crowded primary for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Senate <\/a>in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/utah\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Utah<\/a>, beating out a more conservative candidate endorsed by former <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President Donald Trump<\/a> to replace outgoing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mitt-romney\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Utah congressman held a more than 20-point lead over his next closest competitor, Mayor Trent Staggs, whom Trump endorsed shortly before the Utah GOP convention in April, as ballots continued to be counted late Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis, who has represented the 3rd Congressional District since 2017, is a bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus member and a leader of GOP efforts to address climate change in Congress. He is currently the longest-serving member of the House delegation from Utah.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>WASHINGTON \u2013 JUNE 14: Rep. (Bill Clark\/CQ Roll Call via AP Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Curtis did not win the Utah convention, he was able to qualify for the primary ballot utilizing a signature-gathering method put into place for centrist candidates. While Utah Republicans typically embrace the most conservative candidates, the voters sometimes don\u2019t follow party leaders. Winning a Utah nominating convention only means the candidate will appear on the primary ballot \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t mean they become the eventual nominee. <\/p>\n<p>The congressman, known for his pragmatic conservatism and passion for addressing climate change, portrayed himself in the image of Romney, who is retiring at the end of this term. During the campaign, Staggs claimed Curtis was \u201ca Democrat posing as a Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis is the only candidate who did not directly endorse Trump\u2019s reelection bid, though he pledged to support the party\u2019s nominee. The 64-year-old previously declined to support Trump\u2019s 2016 election but embraced the former president\u2019s agenda once he was elected. He has not been as vocal of a critic of Trump as Romney, who voted twice to remove the former president from office during the two impeachment trials in the Senate, but he refused to support Trump\u2019s claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Curtis, a former Democrat, ran unsuccessfully for Utah state Senate in 2000. At that time, he served as the chairman of the Democratic Party in Utah County. He switched his party affiliation to a Republican in 2009 when he ran for mayor of Provo, where he served until 2017. That year, he ran for Rep. Jason Chaffetz\u2019s (R-UT) seat and won a Republican primary and defeated his Democratic opponent.
