The decision was made by a narrow margin of 11-10 in the 21-member chamber, indicating mixed opinions among the legislators. Notably, \u2064Democratic state Senator Kyra Hoffner,\u200c who\u2063 co-sponsored the \u200dbill, voted in\u200c favor after abstaining \u2062from\u2064 voting \u200dthe previous\u2064 week.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/delaware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Delaware<\/a> Senate passed a bill Tuesday that will allow doctor-assisted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>suicide<\/a> for terminal patients who opt for it, potentially making Delaware the 11th state to approve such a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>measure<\/a> if Gov. John Carney (D-DE) signs it.<\/p>\n<p>The bill had been hotly debated in the 21-member chamber, with some Democrats objecting to the bill, which passed by an 11-10 margin. Its co-sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Kyra Hoffner, voted in favor of it after declining to vote on it last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry that I did not vote Thursday like I wanted to,\u201d Hoffner <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.style.yahoo.com\/bill-allowing-doctor-assisted-suicide-222241484.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Tuesday, adding that she had time to reflect over the weekend and talk to both supporters and opponents of the bill. \u201cIt has been a very emotional weekend for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans formed the strongest opposition to the bill in the Democratic-led chamber.<\/p>\n<p>State Senate Minority Whip Brian Pettyjohn said assisted suicide suggests that \u201csome lives are less worth living\u201d and added that the procedure is not supported by any major medical organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur response to suffering should not be to eliminate the sufferer,\u201d Pettyjohn said.<\/p>\n<p>GOP state Sen. David Lawson added, \u201cHow more despicable can we become?\u201d\u00a0in response to the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Delaware Senate Majority Leader Brian Townsend countered that assisted suicide is not about \u201celiminating\u201d terminally ill patients but \u201cempowering\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also passed the Delaware House of Representatives by a narrow margin, highlighting the polarization of the issue, which is legal in less than a quarter of the states in the United States. It would allow adult residents diagnosed with a terminal illness and expected to die within six months to request lethal prescription drugs from a medical professional, who would have to confirm the patient\u2019s diagnosis and prognosis before acting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The patient would need to make three requests, two oral and one written, and wait 15 days after the initial request in order to receive the drugs and self-administer them.
