LockBit has demanded a ransom by a specified deadline, threatening to reveal\u200d the information. There is skepticism about the legitimacy of this \u200bclaim, especially as\u200d LockBit has been weakened \u2064by an international \u2062law enforcement operation, Operation Cronos, that significantly \u200cdisrupted its \u2062operations. The claim&#8217;s validity and LockBit&#8217;s current abilities remain in question\u2063 as the deadline approaches.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/jharris\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/jharris\/%20\"><span>Jared Harris<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 25, 2024 at 8:48am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The U.S. Federal Reserve may have been the victim of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/leftist-journalist-indicted-federal-charges-allegedly-hacking-fox-news-leaking-tucker-carlson-material\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hacking <\/a>scheme, endangering some 33 terabytes (each terabyte being 1,000 gigabytes) of Americans\u2019 sensitive financial information, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/US\/2024\/06\/24\/lockbit-federal-reserve-breach-threat\/1551719268783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Press International<\/a> reported Monday.<\/p>\n<p>LockBit, the cybergang that claimed the attack, issued a Tuesday deadline for the Fed to cough up a ransom for the stolen data.<\/p>\n<p>With both sides largely silent, it was unknown exactly what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-reject-measure-to-prevent-irs-from-collecting-americans-sensitive-banking-information\/\" title=\"Democrats Reject Measure To Prevent IRS From Collecting Americans\u2019 Sensitive Banking Information\">banking information<\/a> the group had \u2014 or if the hack was even real.<\/p>\n<p>Cyberattack tracker HackManac posted a screenshot of LockBit\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/islamic-terrorists-launch-deadly-attack-church-sunday-mass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday <\/a>dark net announcement about the alleged Fed breach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c33 terabytes of juicy banking information containing Americans\u2019 banking secrets,\u201d the group\u2019s post said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou better hire another negotiator within 48 hours,\u201d LockBit continued, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/marc-elias-sussmann-comments-throw-durham-trial-into-disarray\/\" title=\"Marc Elias\u2019 Sussmann Comments Throw Durham Trial Into Disarray\">seemingly hinting<\/a> at ongoing negotiations, \u201cand fire this clinical idiot who values Americans\u2019 bank secrecy at $50,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CyberAttack?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CyberAttack<\/a> \ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/USA?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#USA<\/a>: US Federal Reserve has been listed as a victim by the LockBit 3.0 ransomware group.<\/p>\n<p>The hackers allegedly exfiltrated 33 TB of banking information.<\/p>\n<p>Ransom deadline: 25th Jun 24.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ransomware?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ransomware<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JGC1YG7y4A\">pic.twitter.com\/JGC1YG7y4A<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 HackManac (@H4ckManac) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/H4ckManac\/status\/1805159382881009779?\">June 24, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the nefarious organization\u2019s claim was a bold one, not everyone was convinced the group had pulled off a breach of the highly secure Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is the Federal Reserve at risk?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One fact that could hint the entire hack was a bluff was that LockBit was severely hobbled when an international law enforcement effort dubbed Operation Cronos tightened the noose around the group.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infosecurity-magazine.com\/news\/operation-cronos-lockbit-takedown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Infosecurity Magazine<\/a>, the operation saw the successful seizure of 34 LockBit servers, the closure of 14,000 \u201crogue\u201d accounts and a chilling freeze of the group\u2019s 200 cryptocurrency accounts.<\/p>\n<p>A Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/us-and-uk-disrupt-lockbit-ransomware-variant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> on the group\u2019s takedown noted the indictment of Russian members of the group. A total of five people were charged in the hacking schemes in February.<\/p>\n<p>A few of LockBit\u2019s assets apparently fell through the cracks in this operation, hinting that the group could still be capable of harm.<\/p>\n<p>But does this hacking organization have enough fight in it to take on the Federal Reserve?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPost-Operation Cronos, LockBit appears to be in a state of desperation, attempting to regain its credibility and recruit affiliates by showcasing high-profile attacks,\u201d Ferhat Dikbiyik, chief research and intelligence officer for the risk management firm Black Kite, told <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconangle.com\/2024\/06\/24\/lockbit-claims-federal-reserve-breach-demands-ransom-not-release-stolen-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SiliconAngle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unusual for ransomware groups to successfully breach such significant institutions without swift retaliation or acknowledgment,\u201d Dikbiyik said. \u201cThe size of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-cop-joined-the-protest-that-became-a-riot-she-says-d-c-cops-colluded-with-antifa\/\" title=\"This Cop Joined the \u2018Protest\u2019 That Became a Riot. Cops Colluded With Antifa.\">alleged breach<\/a> and the dramatic narrative could very well be part of a broader strategy to instill fear and re-establish dominance in the cybercrime ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LockBit had not offered any evidence for its extraordinary claim.<\/p>\n<p>As the deadline rapidly approached, the group\u2019s credibility as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/even-fbi-director-wray-says-chinese-hackers-targeting-us-critical-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">powerful and malicious cyberspace actor<\/a> was set to be tested.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
