Reports suggest that Melania, who has been private and less enthusiastic about the Beltway lifestyle, may spend her time\u2062 commuting between Palm \u200dBeach, New York, and Washington, D.C., only appearing at the\u200b White House for key \u2062ceremonial events. This contrasts with her more visible\u200c predecessors like Michelle Obama and Jill Biden. Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 25, 2024 at 7:02am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>If Donald Trump moves back into the White House for a second time, things could look a lot different \u2014 especially in regards to the role of the first lady, if reports are accurate.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/washington-dc\/2024\/06\/24\/melania-trump-dc-first-lady-sightings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios<\/a>, Melania Trump \u2014 not known to love the Beltway lifestyle or its denizens \u2014 might spend her second four years as first lady commuting between Palm Beach, Florida, New York and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>And gossip columnists can definitely not expect to see Melania about town in the nation\u2019s capital like they\u2019re used to with other administrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove \u2019em or hate \u2019em, tracking a first family\u2019s comings and goings around town is an extreme sport in D.C. Extra points if you run into one of the big names yourself while leaving Le Dip or SoulCycle,\u201d Axios reported Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike the Obamas and Bidens, the Trumps largely avoided jaunts into hometown Washington. Melania was so atypically reclusive for a first lady that a long-running whisper campaign questioned whether she lived at the White House or with her parents in the \u2018burbs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given those proclivities, Axios surveyed what they called a \u201chandful of Melania-ologists\u201d to see what they thought a second stint of first lady-dom would look like for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/photos-6-foot-7-barron-trump-towering-melania-go-viral-rare-showing-easter-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slovenian-born wife<\/a> of the presumptive GOP nominee. (It\u2019s unclear whether these \u201cMelania-ologists\u201d were as credentialed in the field as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oed.com\/dictionary\/kremlinologist_n?tl=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kremlinologists<\/a>\u201d of the 1960s and 1970s, but we\u2019ll take their word for it.)<\/p>\n<p>Instead of spending her time in the East Wing of the White House, Axios\u2019 sources said, she would instead be \u201cjetting between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/donald-trump-elon-musk-meet-discuss-potential-white-house-role-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palm Beach<\/a> (where she\u2019s spent the past four years) and New York (where tongues are wagging about Baron maybe attending NYU), coming to the White House only for ceremonial undertakings like state dinners or special events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelania does what Melania wants,\u201d said Washington Post associate editor Mary Jordan, whose book on the former first lady qualifies her as a Melania-ologist. (That may be my favorite neologism of the 2024 campaign thus far, I must admit.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/barron-melania-make-first-appearance-since-trump-conviction-tougher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melania\u2019s<\/a> take on the position, Jordan argues, makes her \u201cstand out in history from any other first lady,\u201d since \u201c[h]er view is unelected, not paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are you voting for Trump?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another Melania-ologist, Kate Andersen Brower \u2014 whose Melania-related credentials include authoring several books on the White House, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/First-Women-Americas-Modern-Ladies-ebook\/dp\/B01M8M6GML\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=37FV1I6HQI1J1&#038;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.sKhGKD3wd0AnXUvGPXz_Kdjif4HdXO8ySSATjv_Y4LFlWCRc4J6xi_vNU_E6fVdiOgLerm6-E5v8Yiopb_67YNkyfQwTRHllQO5buu7bE0CpkpzwAuxzRWfdrkCl2e4hTwn_DKQusqfdERzGmBkionX2HULw1xjNTfJ2RmSr5vDLwqpi7UwXfSmJSjIcJ3bb0XkUEgMgVpDdsUKB45TBHEz-MuB4RIo03zW-HDnyt3g.wd9xAuv0IFQXXfZEsFgFyIdC3VKNDB3FSTIH1FYqnuE&#038;dib_tag=se&#038;keywords=kate+andersen+brower&#038;qid=1719290624&#038;sprefix=%2Caps%2C290&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one on first ladies<\/a> published three days before Trump took office \u2014 added that Melania was removing herself even further from the Beltway orbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s distancing herself even more from her husband and from the Washington social political scene,\u201d Brower said. \u201cI mean, she clearly hated being in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, how much stock you put in Melania-ology is pretty much up to you. Much was made of the fact that she wasn\u2019t in or around the courtroom during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/guilty-verdict-hits-barron-melania-hard-trumps-family-braces-sentencing-date-tougher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manhattan campaign finance trial<\/a>, although nobody seemed to come up with a particularly salient reason as to <em>why;<\/em> you could just as easily say that she was distancing herself from a \u201cporn star hush money\u201d case as you could say that she wasn\u2019t going to dignify the kangaroo court with the importance of her presence. Or you could just say she was a busy mom with a college-age kid.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Axios\u2019 Melania-ologists seemed to read quite a bit into everything, including her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/melania-trump-says-goodbye-dc-stylish-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fashion choices<\/a>: \u201cWhile Melania gravitated toward flowy and feminine silhouettes at the outset of her husband\u2019s administration, by the end she was opting for clothes with sharp shoulders and rigid buttons \u2014 \u2018almost like an armor,\u2019 says Kate Bennett, a former CNN White House correspondent who wrote a book about the former first lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure if Bennett laughed when she said it or whether Axios\u2019 Mimi Montgomery chuckled when she transcribed it for the piece, but if they didn\u2019t, a much-deserved chuckle at the fatuousness of some aspects of Melania-ology was missed by all.<\/p>\n<p>However, on a substantive note, Jordan said that this time around, she\u2019d surround herself with a \u201cbetter\u201d and \u201cmore qualified\u201d staff than she had during the first Trump presidency, during which she kept the number of people around her small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow having seen how this works, she would just be wiser and she would be more vocal and more demanding about what the first lady\u2019s office should get,\u201d Jordan said.<\/p>\n<p>At least that much we can probably avouch for. As for the rest of Melania-ology, treat it as you will. I\u2019d personally like to see it happen; for once, perhaps we can have a first lady that doesn\u2019t treat the District of Columbia and its denizens as if it were the entire country and, like Michelle Obama and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/whoopi-goldberg-calls-ph-d-jill-biden-doctor-great-surgeon-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Doctor<\/em> Jill Biden<\/a>, assume that their job should be mounting a charm offensive for government apparatchiks and press functionaries.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
