These technologies were unveiled by Mayor Muriel Bowser and MPD \u2062Chief Pamela Smith during an event highlighting the achievements \u200bof the Real-Time Crime\u200c Center, which\u2063 began operations in April. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and MPD Chief Pamela Smith unveiled the new initiatives at an event, and touted the success of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/2957865\/dc-opens-real-time-crime-center-district-tries-crack-down-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Real-Time Crime Center\">Real-Time Crime Center<\/a>, which opened in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that MPD\u2019s Air Support Unit plays an important role in driving down crime and keeping our community safe, and these upgrades are going to support that work,\u201d Bowser said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already seen success with the Real-Time Crime Center, and this is one more way to leverage new technology to protect officers, keep DC safe, and drive down crime,\u201d Bowser added.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Our new helicopter and drone program are two critical investments in MPD&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/capital-punishment-what-are-the-realistic-options-on-the-table-to-cure-the-dc-crime-crisis\/\" title=\"Addressing the DC Crime Wave: Exploring Effective Solutions for Capital Punishment Challenges\">crime-fighting capabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve already seen success with the Real-Time Crime Center. The police department said the drones will not be used for facial recognition or be armed with weapons. Activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2584087\/district-of-crime-how-rising-crime-hurts-communities-and-threatens-the-american-dream-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"worried\">worried<\/a> that the crime in the district last year was hampering the well-being of both residents and tourists of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics from the MPD <a href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/ko\/page\/district-crime-data-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"show\">show<\/a> year-to-year crime is down in the district in all categories except for sex abuse.
