The lawsuit was filed \u2064in an effort\u200c to have this section declared unconstitutional, seeking legal \u2063intervention to ensure that \u2064charitable \u200cbail activities can continue.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2014 Two groups have filed a federal lawsuit to stop elements of a state law they say bars charitable bail activity.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU of Georgia and the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown University Law Center filed the lawsuit on Friday, asking a judge to declare Section 4 of Georgia Senate Bill 63 unconstitutional and issue a temporary restraining order barring the law from taking effect on July 1.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/france-isnt-meeting-its-own-paris-climate-accord-commitments\/\" title=\"France Isn\u2019t Meeting Its Own Paris Climate Accord Commitments\">groups filed<\/a> on behalf of Barred Business Foundation, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, and John Cole Vodicka and Steve Williams, both members of Athens\u2019 Oconee Street United Methodist Church. Vodicka coordinates the charitable bail fund the church\u2019s Justice &#038; Outreach Committee administers, and Williams volunteers with the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/63873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SB 63<\/strong><\/a> is cruel and costly, forcing people to languish in jail because they can\u2019t pay for their release, and prohibiting others from being able to help them become free,\u201d Cory Isaacson, legal director of the ACLU of Georgia, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this law, the State of Georgia makes it illegal for people to exercise their First Amendment rights to help those who are detained solely because they are poor,\u201d Isaacson added. \u201cIt is mean and it is unconstitutional, and our hope is that the courts will step in to stop the State from doing more harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, The Bail Project said it closed its Atlanta site, effective June 10, because of SB 63.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Republican Lt. Governor Burt Jones, who advocated for the measure, did not have an immediate comment on the legislation, instead pointing to a May <a href=\"https:\/\/ltgov.georgia.gov\/press-releases\/2024-05-01\/lt-governor-burt-joness-public-safety-priorities-signed-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>statement<\/strong><\/a> issued after Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed the measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe passage of these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/georgia-governor-signs-series-of-public-safety-bills\/\" title=\"Georgia Governor Enacts Public Safety Legislation\">bills helps enable law enforcement<\/a> to do their jobs and allows offenders to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d Jones said in the May statement. \u201cWe will not allow criminals to roam free in our streets.
