To put this in perspective, when she had her moment of sporting glory at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, here were some of the people who were still alive: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-releases-letter-received-nixon-1987-whenever-decide-run-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Nixon<\/a>, Audrey Hepburn, Kurt Cobain, John Candy, Jessica Tandy, Jerry Garcia, and Dinah Shore.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, I hate to be morbid, but you remember those people, and you remember those people for being dead, and being dead for a really, <em>really<\/em> long time.<\/p>\n<p>Those people were all still with us when Summer Sanders won two golds, a silver and a bronze in Barcelona. That\u2019s impressive. It\u2019s beyond the capabilities of all but only a minuscule percentage of Americans. And it will be in the record books as long as the record books exist.<\/p>\n<p>But still, it\u2019s not exactly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/media-wont-say-michael-phelps-drops-truth-bomb-trans-athletes-womens-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Phelps<\/a> territory, which is why we kind of forgot she was still around unless we were regular viewers of the Pac-12 Network, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscaststudio.com\/2024\/06\/06\/pac-12-network-cease-broadcasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soon-to-be mothballed<\/a> cable network of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/college-athletic-conferences-form-new-coalition-to-lobby-for-nil-legislation\/\" title=\"New coalition of college athletic conferences formed to advocate for NIL legislation.\">collegiate athletic conference<\/a> that has an equally shaky future, since 10 of its 12 members <a href=\"https:\/\/herosports.com\/fbs-college-football-realignment-pac-12-mountain-west-merger-stanford-cal-heading-to-aac-cpcp\/#:~:text=Which%20Teams%20Are%20Leaving%20The,left%20in%20the%20Pac-12.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are leaving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She also once hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/swimswam.com\/summer-sanders-announced-as-game-show-host\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first game show<\/a> ever broadcast on HLN \u2014 formerly CNN Headline News \u2014 called \u201cKeywords,\u201d which I\u2019m sure was watched by upwards of tens of people.<\/p>\n<p>However, Sanders is upset. Why? Because WNBA phenom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-caitlin-clark-drops-bomb-media-mocks-rivalry-angel-reeses-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caitlin Clark<\/a> has Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in the history of the Olympics, as her screensaver on her phone. And not Summer Sanders! Can you believe it?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, actually. Pretty much everyone could.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders\u2019 modest proposal for a change of screen-saver came on the TikTok account of \u201cWe Need to Talk,\u201d billed as \u201cThe FIRST-ever all women\u2019s sports show.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you like Caitlin Clark?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s apparently a digital show put on by CBS that\u2019s been around for 10 years and currently has 253,000 followers on TikTok and less than 50,000 subscribers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UClSMwDmonz3bSTLR-Q9V2Gg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>. To paraphrase a Matthew McConaughey character, those aren\u2019t even rookie numbers and I don\u2019t know how you pump them up after 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, wait, yes I do: Get a once-famous Olympian to try to latch onto Clark-mania. In the clip, originally posted in April but which just gained viral traction now, Clark is shown in her University of Iowa uniform with her iPhone and a picture of Phelps as its wallpaper, noting that she has it there because \u201cswimming in the Olympics, it\u2019s pretty tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Caitlin, my name is Summer,\u201d Sanders introduces herself. (Note to \u201cstars\u201d: If you have to introduce yourself, you aren\u2019t one.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may not know me, but I actually have been part of basketball for a really long time,\u201d she said, referencing previous work doing light NBA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnba.com\/archive\/wnba\/features\/salute_sander_040903.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WNBA<\/a> analyst duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut before that, I was part of the chlorinated sport of swimming. Next!<\/p>\n<p>Look, I get that Clarkmania is the sports story of the moment now that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jason-kelce-exposes-toll-travis-dating-taylor-swift-takes-family-cant-normal-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor\/Travis<\/a> and the Kansas City Chiefs are in offseason mode. I also understand everyone wants a part of it.<\/p>\n<p>However, Summer Sanders: You were briefly famous during a period in which George H.W. Bush was the president, Joseph Biden was a young-ish senator from Delaware who was chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee, Barack Obama was a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080608225931\/http:\/\/www.law.uchicago.edu\/media\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law professor<\/a> at the University of Chicago, Nirvana still hadn\u2019t recorded the follow-up to \u201cNevermind\u201d (and Mr. Cobain was still very much alive).<\/p>\n<p>Your fellow American Olympic champions in Barcelona included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/larry-bird-complains-artists-depiction-large-mural-convinces-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Bird<\/a>, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and the rest of the so-called \u201cDream Team,\u201d along with tennis star Jennifer Capriati, sprinter Michael Johnson, and literally nobody else anybody remembers. (That, for most of us, includes you.)<\/p>\n<p>You had a moderately successful career doing various broadcast work. By \u201cmoderately successful,\u201d I mean, better than the average person who makes a stab at a sports broadcasting career and ends up working high-school basketball games in Shreveport, not better than or equal to your fellow Olympian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/inside-nba-workers-left-scared-death-popular-show-featuring-shaq-charles-barkley-may-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Barkley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not a bad lot in life, as long as you\u2019ve lived the rest of it successfully. Don\u2019t get me wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019re not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/caitlin-clark-vanishes-fevers-offense-enraging-fans-loses-angel-reeses-chicago-sky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caitlin Clark<\/a> wallpaper material. Even in a joking context, it\u2019s embarrassing. Stop trying to make Caitlin Clark wallpaper material happen.
