The case is continuing to unfold, with an emphasis on \u2064gathering more evidence\u2064 to potentially\u2064 elevate the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Ogg addressed concerns \u200babout the U.S. immigration system in light \u2062of\u2062 the suspects&#8217; status. \u200dBoth \u2063Ramos \u2064and Martinez entered the U.S.\u2062 illegally and\u200b were under GPS monitoring following their release into the\u200d country. The case highlights broader issues surrounding monitoring and accountability of individuals \u200creleased into the community, as well as general critiques of \u200dthe immigration\u2063 system. Ogg emphasized the tragedy of \u200bthe situation \u2062and the community&#8217;s responsibility to protect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pennsylvania-gov-vetoes-gop-backed-voter-id-bill\/\" title=\"Pennsylvania Gov Vetoes GOP-Backed Voter ID Bill\">vulnerable citizens<\/a> like children.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>District Attorney Kim Ogg for Harris County, Texas, said Monday that the suspects involved in the killing of Jocelyn Nungaray, 12, could receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>death penalty<\/a> if enough evidence is found in this investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Ogg, who lost her primary race for reelection in March, said one of the suspects in Nungaray\u2019s death, Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, was arraigned and had his bond set at $10 million. While Ramos\u2019s charge is not currently eligible for the death penalty, the investigation into Nungaray\u2019s death is ongoing. Additional evidence supporting charges of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/sexual-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>sexual assault<\/a> or kidnapping could make both Ramos and fellow suspect Johan Jose Rangel Martinez \u201cdeath penalty eligible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake: This is a horrific crime, and when we take charges, we do it based on the evidence we have at the moment,\u201d Ogg said. \u201cWe look forward to working with our lab and continuing to work with our investigators, and it\u2019s obvious that Jocelyn had a loving family. She added that the country\u2019s immigration system is \u201cbroken\u201d and that Nungaray\u2019s case reflects this.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez and Ramos were released into the U.S. with GPS monitoring systems after illegally crossing the southern border into El Paso, Texas, this year. Martinez crossed the border on March 14 and was released from the system two months later. Ramos crossed the border on May 28 and removed his GPS system himself, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/21\/us-news\/illegal-venezuelan-migrant-cut-his-ankle-monitor-after-allegedly-killing-12-year-old-jocelyn-nungaray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according to<\/a> a report.<\/p>\n<p>Nungaray\u2019s mother, Alexis, also spoke at the press conference, expressing thanks for the support she has received in the wake of her daughter\u2019s death.
