Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 23, 2024 at 10:00am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>There are plenty of reasons the presidential debates this year are starting so early and being held via President Joe Biden\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n<p>Part of it, no doubt, has to do with the fact that presumptive GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump thinks, not wrongly, that he can manhandle the declining Biden on stage, and the sooner, the better.<\/p>\n<p>However, by accepting the ground rules, he also opened himself up to some serious risk \u2014 particularly when it comes to the hosts.<\/p>\n<p>The first debate takes place Thursday on CNN. Going into enemy territory is already a dangerous move, but it\u2019s doubly dangerous when you consider half of the duo that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-campaign-demands-unprecedented-rule-changes-debates-showing-scared\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moderating the debate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe debate, which will be hosted by CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash in Atlanta on June 27, will mark the first in-person showdown of the 2024 campaign between President Joe Biden and his predecessor, former President Donald Trump,\u201d the network said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/15\/politics\/trump-biden-cnn-debate-rules\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> on June 15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth candidates have accepted the network\u2019s invitation and agreed to accept the rules and format of the debate, as outlined in letters sent to the campaigns by the network in May.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The release went on to note the particulars of the debate: It\u2019s 90 minutes long with two commercial breaks, podium positions determined by coin flip, all that boring stuff nobody should really care about.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the stuff people <em>should<\/em> have cared about when this got released but didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicrophones will be muted throughout the debate except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should Trump insist on a different debate moderator?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhile no props or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-announces-rules-for-first-presidential-debate-muted-mics-and-no-notes\/\" title=\"CNN sets rules for first presidential debate: muted microphones and no notes allowed\">pre-written notes<\/a> will be allowed on the stage, candidates will be given a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome aspects of the debate \u2014 including the absence of a studio audience \u2014 will be a departure from previous debates,\u201d it continued. \u201cBut, as in the past, <strong>the moderators \u2018will use all tools at their disposal to enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion,\u2019<\/strong> according to the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emphasis ours. Emphasis very much ours. Because, you see, video is forever, and we remember Tapper\u2019s reaction four short years ago when Biden was finally declared the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bret-baier-says-fox-news-plan-deal-trump-brings-2020-election-town-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winner of the presidency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a time of several significant and utterly avoidable failures,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jake-tapper-melts-demands-control-room-end-live-video-trump-arraignment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tapper<\/a> declared on Nov. 7, 2020. \u201cMost tragically, of course, the unwillingness to respect facts and science and do everything that could be done to save lives during a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a time where truth and fact were treated with disdain. It is a time of cruelty or official inhumanity such as child separation \u2026 but now, the Trump presidency is coming to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He concluded, \u201cIt must be said, to paraphrase President Ford: For tens of millions of our fellow Americans, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-is-going-on-with-the-paul-pelosi-story\/\" title=\"What Is Going On With the Paul Pelosi Story?\">long national nightmare<\/a> is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cIt has been a time where truth and fact were treated with disdain,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaketapper?\">@JakeTapper<\/a> says. \u201cIt was a time of cruelty where official inhumanities such as child separation became the shameful policy of the United States. Why not just let Biden moderate the debate himself? Oh, wait \u2014 he lacks the capacity. I forgot.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, this is the shill who will be asking the questions, whose team decides when microphones are muted, and who \u201cwill use all tools at [his] disposal to enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, while it still leans hard to the left, this was during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cnn-president-jeff-zucker-responds-criticism-networks-mueller-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeff Zucker era<\/a> at CNN, where the network resembled nothing so much as the WWE of liberal politics. I\u2019m halfway surprised that, after he gave these remarks, Tapper didn\u2019t seek out the network\u2019s token conservative contributor, Scott Jennings, and hit him over the head with an aluminum folding chair.<\/p>\n<p>While the tenor of CNN may have changed slightly for the better, Jake Tapper is still the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cnns-jake-tapper-surprised-bidens-stunning-admission-2024-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jake Tapper<\/a> who was willing to say those words. Whether or not he believed the words \u2014 it certainly sounded like he did \u2014 they came out of his mouth freely and without compulsion.<\/p>\n<p>We are now to expect this man to fairly moderate an event not sanctioned by the usual Commission on Presidential Debates?
