Despite increased spending by many NATO members in response to Russia&#8217;s war in\u2064 Ukraine, Canada, \u200balong with countries like Croatia, Portugal, \u200cItaly, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Spain, is not expected to meet this target for several years. NATO predicts that Canada will spend\u200b about 1.37% of its GDP on defense in 2024. Canadian Defense\u2063 Minister Bill Blair has stated that Canada aims \u200bto reach the 2% target by the end of the decade.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Canada<\/a> is one of only a handful of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>NATO<\/a> allies that won\u2019t reach the requisite benchmark for defense spending, and won\u2019t likely hit it for several years.<\/p>\n<p>All NATO allies are required to spend at least 2% of their country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/its-official-trump-crushes-record-for-largest-gdp-increase-in-us-history-3rd-quarter-gdp-up-33-1\/\" title=\"IT'S OFFICIAL: Trump Crushes Record for Largest GDP Increase in US History -- 3rd Quarter GDP Up 33.1%\">gross domestic product<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Russia\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/war-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>war in Ukraine<\/a> has prompted several allies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccarthy-a-hell-no-on-omnibus-spending-bill-as-congress-races-to-avert-december-16-government-shutdown\/\" title=\"McCarthy a \"Hell No\" on Omnibus Spending Bill as Congress Races to Avert December 16 Government Shutdown\">dramatically increase spending<\/a>. Of the 32 countries in the alliance, Iceland does not have a military, and 23 countries are expected to meet the benchmark, according to recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/3051304\/russian-invasion-ukraine-galvanizing-force-behind-nato-spending-ramp-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>information from the alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The allies that are expected not to reach the 2% threshold are Croatia, Portugal, Italy, Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Spain. <\/p>\n<p>Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair acknowledged last week that it should reach that marker by the end of the decade. NATO projected that it will spend about 1.37% of its GDP in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Blair said Canada\u2019s defense spending will likely be increased to at least 1.75% of GDP by 2029. He thinks its plans to replace the aging submarine fleet or other defense purchases would likely push it past the benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is \u201cprobably the biggest laggard within the Alliance right now,\u201d Daniel Kochis, a foreign policy analyst who focuses on NATO for the Hudson Institute, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cOftentimes it\u2019s the European countries, some of the bigger European countries, which I think receive a lot of criticism for their lack of spending, but Canada, in terms of its economy size, in terms of its role in the world, is well under spending under the Trudeau Government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canada is neighbors with the alliance\u2019s largest individual contributor in the United States and is surrounded by different oceans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country finds itself at a pivotal moment. Our sovereignty and our security are no longer guaranteed by our geographic location,\u201d Blair said, according to the Associated Press. \u201cBut the new threat environment, the greater accessibility of our Arctic, the new technologies, and the actions of our adversaries have taught us that we need to be ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canada and Belgium are the only two allies that fell short of the other major NATO guidelines, which is that at least 20% should be spent on equipment, weapons, and other capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Dalibor Rohac, a senior fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that the countries\u2019 shortcomings on defense spending were \u201cperfectly understandable\u201d given both have \u201ca long tradition of complacency.\u201d He attributed Belgium\u2019s spending to the geographic distance between it and Russia, while he noted, \u201cIt\u2019s slightly harder to understand because Canada actually is close proximity to Russia.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada remains among the few NATO allies not meeting the 2% GDP defense spending benchmark, with no expectation to reach it soon.
