Jeff Landry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ten-commandments-must-displayed-public-school-classrooms-according-new-state-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a bill<\/a> into law Wednesday that requires a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/louisiana-becomes-first-state-to-require-ten-commandments-be-displayed-in-classrooms\/\" title=\"Louisiana mandates Ten Commandments displays in classrooms, a first for any state\">poster-sized display<\/a> with \u201clarge, easily readable font\u201d must be placed in classrooms from kindergarten to state-funded universities.<\/p>\n<p>Trump posted on Truth Social, \u201cI LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER. READ IT \u2014 HOW CAN WE, AS A NATION, GO WRONG???\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTHIS MAY BE, IN FACT, THE FIRST MAJOR STEP IN THE REVIVAL OF RELIGION, WHICH IS DESPERATELY NEEDED, IN OUR COUNTRY. BRING BACK TTC!!! MAGA2024,\u201d he added. TTC refers to the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of the <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/LA\/text\/HB71\/id\/2978627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new law<\/a> argued that the\u00a0Ten Commandments\u00a0have played a role beyond religion in forming the nation\u2019s laws and traditions.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Louisiana law requires that a four-paragraph context statement be included with the display, explaining that the Commandments are part of \u201cfoundational documents of our state and national government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No state funds are earmarked to be used in implementing the mandate. Instead, the posters can be paid for through private donations.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the new law say it violates the Constitution, citing the\u00a0First Amendment, which states, in part, that Congress shall \u201cmake no law respecting an establishment of religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should the Ten Commandments be posted in classrooms?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the Freedom from Religion Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laaclu.org\/en\/press-releases\/civil-liberties-groups-will-file-lawsuit-against-louisiana-law-requiring-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Wednesday they would be filing a suit to challenge the new law.<\/p>\n<p>They pointed to the 1980 Supreme Court case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/supremecourt\/text\/449\/39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stone v. Graham<\/a>, in which the justices ruled that a Kentucky law requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments in classrooms violated the First Amendment\u2019s establishment clause.<\/p>\n<p>At that time the Court cited the so-called Lemon test to determine whether a law had the effect of establishing a religion.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1971 case Lemon v. Kurtzman, the justices had adopted an analysis that required government action to be ruled unconstitutional if it had a primary effect of advancing a particular religion.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/firstamendment.mtsu.edu\/article\/lemon-test\/#:~:text=The%20test%20was%20often%20applied,compliance%20with%20the%20First%20Amendment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abandoned<\/a> the Lemon test in the 2022 case Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/21pdf\/21-418_i425.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determining<\/a> the establishment clause \u201cmust be interpreted by \u2018reference to historical practices and understandings.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So it appears the Louisiana Ten Commandments display would have a good chance of being ruled constitutional under this guidance, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/americas-greatest-presidents-christian-nationalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prevalence of Christian beliefs<\/a> in the nation\u2019s laws and history.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">And based on the Bible!<\/p>\n<p>Moses, the Lawgiver, is a statue that is no longer \u201cpolitically correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moses, holding the two tablets of the Ten Commandments, is the center figure on the East Pediment of the Supreme Court building.<\/p>\n<p>On the wall directly behind the Chief Justice\u2019s\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VwaQrt8lZL\">pic.twitter.com\/VwaQrt8lZL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Linda Marie Lovison (@lilo623) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lilo623\/status\/1691543546640363520?\">August 15, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The first sentence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/founding-docs\/declaration-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Declaration of Independence<\/a> references the \u201cLaws of Nature and of Nature\u2019s God\u201d as a basis for the colonists\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/the-constitution\/historic-document-library\/detail\/william-blackstonecommentaries-on-the-laws-of-england-1765-69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ten-commandments-must-be-displayed-in-all-public-school-classrooms-according-to-new-state-law\/\" title=\"New State Law Mandates Display of Ten Commandments in All Public School Classrooms\">pre-eminent law book<\/a><\/a> at the time of the founding Blackstone\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laits.utexas.edu\/poltheory\/blackstone\/cle.int.s02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commentaries on the Law of England,<\/a>\u201d (first published in 1765) explained the phrase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon these two foundations, the law of nature [established by God and observable in creation] and the law of revelation [found in the Bible, directly revealed by God], depend all human laws; that is to say, no human laws should be suffered to contradict these,\u201d Blackstone wrote.<\/p>\n<p>All state constitutions reference God, usually in their preambles and often as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usconstitution.net\/states_god-html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source of their liberties<\/a> under law, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2017\/08\/17\/god-or-the-divine-is-referenced-in-every-state-constitution\/#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Constitution%20never%20explicitly,a%20Pew%20Research%20Center%20analysis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>. Thirty-four of them refer to God more than once.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/presidential-inaugurations-i-do-solemnly-swear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">every president<\/a> since George Washington has placed his hand on the Bible while being sworn into office while speaking an oath that ends, \u201cso help me God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Nashville, Tennessee in February, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-bring-back-christianity-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cI really believe it\u2019s the biggest thing missing from this country, it\u2019s the biggest thing missing,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to bring back our religion.
