The approval was given to four products manufactured by the vaping\u200c company Njoy, which includes two pre-filled e-cigarette \u200cpods and two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-biden-admin-says-its-cracking-down-on-illegal-chinese-vapes-you-can-still-buy-them-next-door-to-the-fda\/\" title=\"Biden Admin targets illegal Chinese vapes, but they're still available nearby FDA.\">disposable e-cigarettes<\/a>. The \u200dFDA&#8217;s approval\u200d was based on\u200c evidence suggesting adult \u2062smokers might benefit from switching\u2063 to \u2062these less harmful alternatives. However, the decision \u2062has\u2063 faced criticism from anti-tobacco \u2064groups \u200dconcerned about menthol&#8217;s appeal to young people. Despite the criticisms, the FDA had \u2062previously approved 23 tobacco-flavored products \u200dand devices, underlining\u2064 a focus on reducing smoking-related harm among \u200badults.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a> approved the first menthol-flavored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/e-cigarettes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">electronic cigarettes<\/a> in the United States on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA said it had authorized four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/appeals-court-stays-fdas-ban-on-juul-e-cigs\/\" title=\"Appeals Court Stays FDA\u2019s Ban on Juul E-Cigs\">e-cigarette products made<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vaping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">vaping<\/a> company Njoy. Two of the products are pre-filled pods used with an e-cigarette device, while the other two are disposable e-cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA\u2019s decision to authorize the products was based on evidence showing that the products could provide some benefit to adult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/smoking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">smokers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased upon our rigorous scientific review, in this instance, the strength of evidence of benefits to adult smokers from completely switching to a less harmful product was sufficient to outweigh the risks to youth,\u201d Matthew Farrelly, director of the Office of Science in the FDA\u2019s Center for Tobacco Products, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-authorizes-marketing-four-menthol-flavored-e-cigarette-products-after-extensive-scientific\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the four menthol-flavored e-cigarette products approved Friday, the FDA has authorized 23 tobacco-flavored products and devices. <\/p>\n<p>Its decision was met with criticism from anti-tobacco groups, who warn that the flavor of menthol is especially appealing to young people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FDA\u2019s decision \u2026 is deeply troubling given the extensive scientific evidence that menthol is a flavor that appeals to kids and the FDA\u2019s repeated conclusions that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fda-expected-to-seek-more-time-to-evaluate-juul-products\/\" title=\"FDA expected to seek more time to evaluate Juul products\">flavored e-cigarettes<\/a>, including menthol-flavored products, have driven youth e-cigarette use,\u201d Yolanda Richardson, president and CEO of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tobaccofreekids.org\/press-releases\/2024_06_21_fda-authorization-of-menthol-flavored-e-cigarettes-is-troubling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Richardson cited data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/youth-and-tobacco\/results-annual-national-youth-tobacco-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey<\/a>, which found that nearly a quarter of high school e-cigarette users nationwide use menthol-flavored e-cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes two months after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/biden-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Biden administration<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2981457\/biden-administration-backs-off-menthol-ban-court-black-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">delayed<\/a> its plan to ban menthol cigarettes. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The FDA said it \u201cremains concerned about the risk of youth use of all e-cigarettes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added that each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and that the authorizations of the four Njoy products do not apply to any other menthol-flavored e-cigarette products.<\/p>\n<p> <script>!function(){var g=window;g.googletag=g.googletag||{},g.googletag.cmd=g.googletag.cmd||[],g.googletag.cmd.push(function(){g.googletag.pubads().setTargeting(\"has-featured-video\",\"true\")})}();<\/script><script>var _bp=_bp||[];_bp.push({\"div\":\"Brid_881044\",\"obj\":{\"id\":\"27789\",\"width\":\"1280\",\"height\":\"720\",\"stickyDirection\":\"below\",\"video\":\"881044\"}});<\/script><script defer src=\"https:\/\/services.brid.tv\/player\/build\/brid.min.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, the FDA approved the first menthol-flavored e-cigarettes in the U.S., authorizing four Njoy products.
