Don Bacon (R-NE), Republicans have criticized President Joe Biden\u2019s border policies in response to the death of Morin, who was killed while on a run on a Maryland hiking trail last year. Some Republicans, in response to police arresting a suspect from El Salvador this week, have explicitly used her death to claim that \u201cmore innocent Americans will die\u201d if Biden is reelected.<\/p>\n<p>The president has tacked to the right on immigration over the past month, but Republicans blame an influx in border crossings on his decision to reverse Trump-era policies upon assuming office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cANOTHER one of Crooked Joe Biden\u2019s Illegal Immigrant Criminals was just charged with raping and murdering ANOTHER innocent American woman!\u201d former President Donald Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=we8uXI7-e-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">In an interview<\/a> with Blackburn, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler detailed the case of Morin\u2019s death after running a monthslong investigation that led law enforcement to Victor Martinez-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant who had been caught and sent back across the border three times last year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not unique. We\u2019re not special in any way. This is happening across [the country],\u201d Gahler told Blackburn on her <em>Unmuted with Marsha <\/em>podcast on Friday. \u201cThis is the problem that every community is seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gahler then pointed to the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2902002\/laken-rileys-death-house-gop-bidens-state-of-the-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Laken Riley<\/a>, a nursing student who was allegedly murdered earlier this year by a Venezuelan immigrant arrested in 2022 on charges of illegally crossing the border but later released into the country. Republicans have argued that death, along with Morin\u2019s, is a direct result of the Biden administration\u2019s border policies, a sentiment Gahler echoed on the podcast. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that when President [Joe] Biden came into office, he rescinded so many policies that were working. Just the words that were in effect were working and keeping the flow down,\u201d Gahler said. \u201cWhat\u2019s coming across the border now are \u2014 sure, there\u2019s families who are looking to make a better life for themselves. But there are cartels, trafficking, there are drugs flowing into our country. And there are criminals and probably terrorists coming across the border as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"we8uXI7-e-4\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheriff Jeff Gahler: Unmuted with Marsha\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/we8uXI7-e-4?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Gahler\u2019s comments come as Martinez-Hernandez is set to appear in court on Friday as a judge determines whether he should remain in jail without bond until his trial. <\/p>\n<p>The deaths of Morin and Riley have reignited efforts to expand the authority of local law enforcement to take illegal immigrants into federal custody. <\/p>\n<p>Blackburn introduced the Clear Law Enforcement for Criminal Alien Removal, or CLEAR, Act in March to give state and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/51-lawmakers-warn-biden-immigration-order-could-make-border-crisis-catastrophic-overnight\/\" title=\"51 Lawmakers Warn Biden Immigration Order Could Make Border Crisis \u2018Catastrophic Overnight\u2019\">local law enforcement officials<\/a> more tools to assist federal government agencies with deporting immigrants who are charged with crimes while in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the thing that I think is frustrating to people, is they feel like this is landed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-announces-1000-bonuses-for-police-first-responders-we-will-always-support-our-law-enforcement\/\" title=\"DeSantis Announces ,000 Bonuses For Police, First Responders: \u2018We Will Always Support Our Law Enforcement\u2019\">local law enforcement level<\/a>, and that it is up to local law enforcement,\u201d Blackburn said. \u201cTo attend to this, I have legislation, the CLEAR Act, which would require deportation of criminal illegal aliens and allow local law enforcement when they come into contact with someone who is in the country illegally, that\u2019s committed some type of offense or crime, they can hold them and then require ICE to come pick them up, deport them, and then reimburse that local law enforcement agency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gahler said he supports Blackburn\u2019s legislation, noting that although immigration enforcement is largely the federal government\u2019s responsibility, there should be mechanisms in place to allow for collaboration with local officials. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other GOP lawmakers have filed similar legislation, including Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), who reintroduced a bill in March to strengthen the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s authority to issue requests to local and state authorities to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maryland-government-officials-worked-with-open-borders-activists-to-draft-sanctuary-law\/\" title=\"Maryland Government Officials Worked With Open Borders Activists To Draft Sanctuary Law\">detain illegal immigrants<\/a> who have committed a crime.
