Historical evidence \u2064suggests debates rarely affect presidential election outcomes, yet they remain highly viewed events, as demonstrated by the 73 million \u200dviewers of the first 2020 Trump-Biden\u2063 debate. However, with both candidates being widely recognized and having firmly polarized \u200bsupporter bases, shifts in voter \u2062perception are unlikely. Thomas Hollihan, a USC Annenberg School professor,\u200d noted challenges in engaging the public\u2064 so early in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">election cycle<\/a> \u2062and highlighted the difficulty in changing firmly negative views, which both candidates possess. Despite adjustments \u2064aimed at civility, such as \u2062microphone control, these may provide an advantage to Trump, considering \u2063his previous \u2062debate performance in 2020, \u200bwhich was \u200cgenerally viewed unfavorably.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">debate<\/a> between President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Joe Biden<\/a> and former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Donald Trump<\/a> is unlikely to change the minds of voters who are currently tapped into politics, one expert says. <\/p>\n<p>History shows debates have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/presidential-debates-have-shockingly-little-effect-on-election-outcomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">little impact<\/a> on the outcome of a presidential race, but they do provide a platform where a large number of Americans will get to hear from both candidates. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/06\/21\/6-facts-about-presidential-and-vice-presidential-debates\/#:~:text=More%20than%2073%20million%20people,viewers%20ages%202%20and%20older.)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Nielsen Media Research,<\/a> 73 million people watched at least some of the first Trump-Biden debate in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>The June debate presents a unique challenge: how to engage people with two unpopular but already well-known candidates so early in the election cycle. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDebates tend to be the most viewed moments of a single campaign. We don\u2019t know that\u2019ll be the case this time because it\u2019s coming so early,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/annenberg.usc.edu\/faculty\/thomas-hollihan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Thomas Hollihan<\/a>, a professor at the University of Southern California\u2019s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cPeople who are undecided or late decided voters don\u2019t pay a lot of attention to politics until the month before they actually have to go cast a ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This debate will mark the first presidential debate between a former president and sitting president. Being so, most Americans are quite familiar with both candidates. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a situation where the core supporters for each candidate are really baked in. They\u2019re not going to change their opinions. Both these candidates have some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/328637\/last-trump-job-approval-average-record-low.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">strongest<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/biden-approval-rating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">negatives<\/a> we\u2019ve ever seen, and it\u2019s much more difficult to change a negative perception than a soft positive perception,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n<p>Debates typically take place in the fall after the conventions. Due to the fact that both men became the presumptive nominees early in the election cycle, the debate and political news cycle has moved that much earlier. <\/p>\n<p>The debate will be hosted on CNN on June 27, with a new set of rules that both candidates have agreed to. There will be no live audience, no pre-written notes allowed, aids cannot be consulted, and perhaps the biggest change: microphones can be turned off if someone is being disruptive. <\/p>\n<p>Hollihan believes that this could be an advantage for Trump. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Trump] came across so badly in the debates in 2020 against Biden that he really offended a lot of a lot of voters who weren\u2019t his most strident partisans,\u201d Hollihan said. Biden is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/10\/23\/poll-final-presidential-debate-biden-trump-432052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">largely seen as the winner<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/30\/918500976\/trump-derails-first-presidential-debate-with-biden-and-5-other-takeaways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">both<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">presidential debates<\/a> in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they turn off his microphone, and he has to kind of confine himself a little bit to what constitutes normal civil interaction, that will actually help him with independent voters,\u201d Hollihan continued. <\/p>\n<p>Hollihan said, if anything, voters take away mistakes from debates. He pointed to a 1992 presidential debate in which then-President George H. W. Bush was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4842764\/user-clip-clintons-feel-pain-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> asked about the national debt<\/a>, but the voter who asked the question was implying a question about the ongoing recession. <\/p>\n<p>She asked how the recession had \u201cpersonally\u201d impacted each candidate. Bush\u2019s answer was viewed as subpar when he said the voter \u201cought to be in the White House every day,\u201d and Bill Clinton was able to make a strong, memorable \u201cI feel your pain\u201d moment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hollihan said Biden\u2019s fault could be similar to Bush\u2019s as the incumbent: making a memorable mistake in the debate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big thing for Biden is can he avoid a mistake? Biden is sort of predictable. His positions are pretty well known. He\u2019s pretty calm. He\u2019s an institutionalist.
