Despite his \u2063academic credentials, his dissertation has \u2062been criticized for having \u2062basic\u2063 errors, logical failures, and instances of plagiarism. The paper argues that community schools, as a model developed by Brazilian Marxist pedagogist \u200cPaulo Freire, should be expanded to include full-time government services addressing all societal aspects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-an-effort-to-curb-bullying-bosses-hollywood-hires-rage-counselors\/\" title=\"In An Effort To Curb Bullying Bosses, Hollywood Hires \u2018Rage Counselors\u2019\">including services<\/a> for adults.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman&#8217;s research was primarily qualitative, involving interviews with various school stakeholders, categorizing them\u200c into roles of oppressor or oppressed based on their demographic backgrounds. His analysis suggests governmental responsibility over \u2063parental \u200cinput in the \u2064success of children, which he supports\u200c with limited statistical evidence and large leaps in logic. Furthermore, the data \u2064from his \u2064study indicated that \u2063non-community schools in New York City performed better in creating strong family-community ties compared to community\u200b schools, contradicting his arguments. Despite this, Bowman continues to advocate for enhanced professional learning opportunities within the community school model\u200d to overcome these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Bowman&#8217;s dissertation includes alleged instances of \u200dplagiarism, particularly in his explanations\u200d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/universities-around-the-country-will-host-critical-whiteness-studies-courses\/\" title=\"Universities nationwide to offer 'Critical Whiteness Studies' courses.\">critical\u200c race theory<\/a>, where he improperly \u200dcredits and inaccurately cites sources. These allegations and the criticism of his academic work cast doubt on the intellectual integrity of his positions and advocacy.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>Jamaal Bowman, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/investigators-uncover-bowman-deception-in-fire-alarm-probe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial<\/a> New York congressman, often appeals to his work as a former school principal and his Ed.D. in education as the basis for his policy positions.<\/p>\n<p>But, according to our analysis, Bowman\u2019s primary academic work \u2014 his 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/openview\/d593e623c894d5d70952589d37b5ac5f\/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&#038;cbl=18750&#038;diss=y\">dissertation<\/a>, \u201cCommunity Schools: The Perceptions and Practices that Foster Broad-Based Collaboration among Leaders with the Community School Ecosystem\u201d \u2014 is riddled with basic errors, failures of logic, and multiple instances of plagiarism. (Bowman did not return a request for comment.)<\/p>\n<p>Bowman has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JamaalBowmanNY\/status\/1239341511353012224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boasted<\/a> about the paper on social media and considers it formative to his political orientation. When asked recently about his political views, Bowman <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/jamaal-bowmans-closing-message-im-still-a-socialist-and-oct-7-was-israels-fault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cI identify as an educator, and as a Black man in America. But my policies align with those of a socialist, so I guess that makes me a socialist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dissertation, which Bowman completed at Manhattanville College, says that \u201cBlack, Latinx, and poor White children have been historically oppressed throughout American history,\u201d and as recompense makes an argument for \u201ccommunity schools,\u201d a concept developed by the Brazilian Marxist pedagogist Paulo Freire, in which schools would be expanded to provide full-time government services for every aspect of society, including for adults.<\/p>\n<p>The statistical work in the paper is limited, and the method primarily consisted of \u201cqualitative\u201d research, with Bowman interviewing 13 school administrators, activists, and parents. Each was immediately placed in a demographic box and assigned the role of oppressor or oppressed. For example, Bowman wrote that \u201cMs. Melendez, a parent leader at Manny Ramirez High School, was born in the Dominican Republican [sic]\u201d and is a true member of the New York community, while \u201cMs. Warren, who identified racially as White, discussed being very aware of being \u2018a visitor in someone else [sic] community all the time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman\u2019s community schools model holds that the government, not parents, is responsible for children\u2019s success. Bowman quotes one school official saying, \u201cFamilies don\u2019t have any deficits. If a mother is collecting welfare, so what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman\u2019s paper relies on large leaps of logic. His limited quantitative research contradicts his basic argument in favor of community schools.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Bowman looked at the outcome of community schools in New York City, referring to it with a pseudonym: \u201cQuantitatively, the aggregate data from the Unified City School Survey were uploaded into Microsoft Wxcel [sic] for data analysis.\u201d Even though the community schools advocated by Bowman were supposed to bring the community together, in his own data, they fared worse than regular schools. \u201cNon-Community Schools achieved a statistically significant higher mean in the area of Strong Family-Community Ties as measured by the 2017 Unified City School Survey,\u201d Bowman wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman shrugged this contradiction aside, saying \u201cit is especially challenging for the Unified City Schools to foster Strong Family-Community Ties\u201d because it is \u201cculturally diverse.\u201d Instead of questioning his premise, he argued that \u201cadditional opportunities for professional learning in the area of Strong Family-Community Ties within the Community School ecosystem could help improve the achievement of Community Schools in this category.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman\u2019s paper also appears to include multiple instances of plagiarism.<\/p>\n<p>In one passage, Bowman explains critical race theory, one of his theoretical methods, by copying from another author\u2019s summary of the 2001 book, <i>Critical Race Theory: An Introduction<\/i>. He takes the passages from R. Rolon-Dow without quotation marks, as required by academic authors. In the copied passage, Bowman merely substitutes \u201cLatino\/Latina\u201d with \u201cLatinx\/Latina,\u201d following the latest academic fashion, although it appears that he misunderstood the purpose of the \u201cx\u201d noun ending, which is to remove gendered language like \u201cLatina.\u201d He also inserts a typo by changing \u201cthe intersection between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-people-europeans-obsessed-with-time-wa-state-official-says\/\" title=\"White People, Europeans Obsessed With Time, WA State Official Says\">race\/ethnicity<\/a> and caring\u201d to \u201cthe intersection between race\/ethnicity caring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though he credits a string of authors in parenthesis, those citations are also copied from Rolon-Dow, with her name also tacked on the end.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>On multiple other occasions, Bowman summarizes other research by copying and pasting without quotation marks, instead of paraphrasing the passages to show that he has an independent understanding of the concepts. For example:<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>In another instance, when describing a study by other researchers, he copies verbatim, again without quotations:<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>The paper provides little in the way of meaningful advances in scholarship. \u201cAs a pragmatic study, no attempt was made here to generalize these data. The researcher studied the phenomenon of collaboration among leaders within the Community School ecosystem within its natural setting. This study reported based simply on the results found,\u201d it concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The general observation amounts to a form of racial reductionism, separating people into identity categories and judging them according to their ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman implied that minority students learn better from minority educators\u2014a contention that would, if true, amount to advocating for segregated schools. Being \u201cjust like the children she served\u201d allowed \u201ca Black female principal\u201d to \u201cenact[] Critical Care as part of her transformational leadership,\u201d the paper said, referring to the version of Critical Theory that Bowman describes deploying on schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman suggested that it may be more important for an educator to be oppressed than competent. \u201cOne can conclude that personal experiences, as opposed to professional learning or training, creates the perceptions and practices that were trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and community-driven,\u201d Bowman wrote, adding that \u201cexemplary academic performance or professional development\u201d was less important than \u201cpersonal experiences\u201d such as growing up as a fellow member of the minority \u201ccommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the kind of dismal pseudo-scholarship that drives much of education and, unfortunately, an increasing share of political life.
