\t\t\t\tmargin-left: 20px; \t\t\t} \t\t} \t<\/style>\n<\/div>\n<p>Secondly, while no PR employee for Boeing ever wants to get woken up in the middle of the night with a report of an incident involving a 737, the plane involved in the Oklahoma City incident was a 737-800 \u2014 an older model that has a relatively safe history and was never plagued by the same software issues that grounded the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-us-airline-grounds-boeing-737-max-9-jetliners-frightening-inflight-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">737 Max<\/a> for nearly two years.<\/p>\n<p>However, the incident did come just mere weeks after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/faa-investigating-boeing-737-suffers-dangerous-dutch-roll-incident-midair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southwest 737 Max 8<\/a> sustained \u201csubstantial\u201d damage after a the \u201cDutch roll\u201d incident during a flight from Phoenix to Oakland, California on May 25.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Dutch roll is \u2018a coupled oscillation\u2019 that creates simultaneous side-to-side and rocking motions, producing a figure-8 effect. The phenomenon is believed to have been named by an aeronautical engineer who compared it to a traditional ice skating technique made popular in the Netherlands,\u201d the New York Times noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf unaddressed, the wobbling can become more exaggerated, creating a dangerous feedback loop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, modern commercial aircraft generally have software that allow them to dampen any Dutch roll effects that might occur in flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s still a lot we don\u2019t know about this,\u201d said Jeff Guzzetti, a former accident investigator for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/clear-violation-mlb-coachs-cockpit-video-triggers-faa-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the FAA<\/a> and NTSB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually modern jets need computers to dampen out these potential \u2018Dutch roll\u2019 tendencies. It may just be an indication of the wrong circumstances at the wrong time with the wrong components out of commission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was, at least, the explanation from Boeing\u2019s top engineer when speaking before Congress this week. Howard McKenzie told a Senate hearing on Tuesday there was a \u201cunique circumstance\u201d involving the Southwest plane in question \u201cthat has nothing to do with design or manufacturing,\u201d according to the aviation news site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/airframers\/southwest-dutch-roll-not-caused-by-737-production-or-design-boeing-chief-engineer\/158820.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flight Global<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pulling together the data that we have, and it does not indicate that there is anything that is of fleet concern here,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Dutch roll is an oscillation due to the rudder actuator responding to a particular circumstance that it is in \u2026 the data we have indicates that this airplane underwent some unique circumstance that is particular to this airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That being said, we\u2019re again being asked to trust the words of Boeing \u2014 a company currently defending itself against whistleblower concerns about quality concern issues with its 737, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/09\/faa-probing-boeing-whistleblowers-quality-claims-on-787-and-777-jets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">777<\/a> and 787 planes. For those of you who are not into civil aviation: <em>that is the entirety of the range of airliners that Boeing currently produces<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Is it any surprise that, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/wary-flyers-paying-extra-avoid-boeings-737-max-planes-reports-2024-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a> noted in January, some flyers are actually <em>paying extra<\/em> to not fly on a Boeing plane?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this Oklahoma incident had nothing to do with the 737 itself or its design. In fact, preliminary circumstantial evidence would suggest that was the case.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, people don\u2019t stake their lives on preliminary circumstantial evidence, and they have issues with a company that has a series of groundings, scandals, incidents, and whistleblowers who just happen to find themselves in, um, a condition where they\u2019re forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sudden-deaths-2-boeing-whistleblowers-10-stepping-forward-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stop blowing whistles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of this \u2014 absent the original 737 Max issues, of course, which were very real \u2014 could just be paranoid malarkey. Would you bet your life on it, though?
