Gabby Giffords<\/a>, a Democrat, was undergoing <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexamainer.com\/tag\/ivf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>in vitro fertilization<\/a> treatment when she was shot in 2011. <\/p>\n<p>In a new story published in <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/mark-kelly-gabby-giffords-ivf-reproductive-freedom-exclusive-essay-8664641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>People Magazine<\/em><\/a>, Giffords and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), detailed their experience going through IVF treatment, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-bill-would-block-banks-from-discriminating-against-firearms-industry\/\" title=\"Arizona Bill Would Block Banks From Discriminating Against Firearms Industry\">abruptly cut short<\/a> after Giffords was a victim of gun violence. Giffords was shot in the head at a \u201cCongress on Your Corner\u201d event at a grocery store in her district near Tucson, Arizona. Seventeen others were also shot, including six people who died as a result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shooting happened on a Saturday morning. Two days later, we were supposed to have an appointment at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, where Gabby had been receiving fertility treatments, to have our embryos implanted to try to begin a pregnancy,\u201d Kelly and Giffords wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike a lot of folks, we got married a little later in our lives. One of us had <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/politics\/sen-mark-kellys-daughter-claudia-gets-married-in-desert-ceremony-wearing-something-borrowed-from-gabby-giffords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>two beautiful daughters<\/a> from a previous marriage. One of us had never had kids,\u201d they continued. \u201cWe wanted to grow our family together and were fortunate enough to be able to pursue the only option for us: In vitro fertilization, or IVF. Gabby never made it to that appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>This is our IVF story. But eventually, we had to. That loss was its own agony,\u201d Kelly and Giffords wrote. <\/p>\n<p>The couple pointed to the recent Alabama Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2868604\/alabama-ivf-case-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ruling on IVF<\/a>, which created chaos on the national level about reproductive rights. Kelly has been one of the most outspoken Senate Democrats in favor of abortion rights, notably following the ruling that said the state\u2019s 1864 ban was enforceable. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake no mistake: The freedom to start a family with IVF is under threat. In Alabama, a decision from the state Supreme Court made IVF virtually impossible for a period of time. In Arizona, the state legislature passed a law that would have threatened access to IVF in our state if it hadn\u2019t been for a veto by Gov. Katie Hobbs,\u201d the couple wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur dream of having a child together was taken away by a gunman. Gabby\u2019s philosophy is \u201cMove ahead,\u201d and that\u2019s what we did to rebuild our lives and find our purpose after what happened to our family. We have a vibrant family we love, including a granddaughter who brings us so much joy,\u201d Kelly and Giffords wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans in Congress have generally come out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3033508\/the-ivf-battle-how-senate-republicans-are-navigating-the-political-minefield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>support<\/a> of IVF treatments, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO),\u00a0who said, \u201cHaving a baby is a pro-life thing. So I\u2019m in favor of it.\u201d However, some wings of the party have voiced concerns about IVF. The Southern Baptist Church announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/3042759\/southern-baptist-convention-comes-out-against-ivf-the-destruction-of-human-embryonic-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>opposition<\/a> to the treatment at its convention last week.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Arizona Rep.
