Murthy, alongside other health professionals, has fought to shine a spotlight on the \u201cmental health crisis\u201d plaguing younger generations. And social media, they say, has only poured gasoline on this blaze of a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/17\/opinion\/social-media-health-warning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Murthy<\/a> published an essay outlining his ever-increasing concerns with the way technology effects the brain \u2014 particularly of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/many-ways-fathers-teach-children-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">young, developing individuals<\/a>. He pleaded for Congress to act upon his request to add a \u201cwarning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/surgeon-general-calls-for-warning-label-on-social-media-for-young-people\/\" title=\"Surgeon General Advocates for Warning Labels on Social Media for Youth\">significant mental health harms<\/a> for adolescents.\u201d But this, the surgeon general urged, requires not only congressional action, but also the support from society at large.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be clear,\u201d Murthy wrote in his essay, \u201ca warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people.\u201d However, a warning label does have a purpose in effectively altering behavior. Kids\u2019 toys have warning labels that indicate choking hazards, skin products have warning labels that specify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-navy-seals-v-biden-ruling-military-vax-mandate-illegal\/\" title=\"U.S. Navy SEALs v. As he wrote: \u201cLegislation from Congress should shield young people from online harassment, abuse and exploitation and from exposure to extreme violence and sexual content that too often appears in algorithm-driven feeds. While the platforms claim they are making their products safer, Americans need more than words. We need proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some have already pushed against Murthy\u2019s pleas, saying his proposed warning label could be a threat to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-doubles-free-speech-offers-ominous-warning-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free speech<\/a>. Others have contested the very notion that social media has harmful consequences. \t\t\t\tmargin-left: 20px; \t\t\t} \t\t} \t<\/style>\n<\/div>\n<p>In his article, Murthy shared the story of a mother whose daughter ended her life as a result of cyber-bullying. \u201cLori had been diligent, monitoring her daughter\u2019s accounts and phone daily,\u201d he wrote, \u201cbut harm still found her child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Lori is not the only parent who has struggled to keep their children safe from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/x-officially-allows-social-media-platform-become-porn-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online dangers<\/a>. Looking out into society, we can see how the government has enforced the use of seatbelts in cars, helmets on motorcycles, and other such safety rails.<\/p>\n<p>But as Murthy put it, \u201cThere is no seatbelt for parents to click, no helmet to snap in place, no assurance that trusted experts have investigated and ensured that these platforms are safe for our kids. At least according to Murthy, we have the means. Nor is it \u201ca failure of willpower and parenting,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the harms we see \u201care the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability.\u201d Murthy said, \u201cWe have the expertise, resources and tools to make social media safe for our kids. Now is the time to summon the will to act. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, who are also \u201cthe authors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/31\/technology\/congress-social-media-safety.html?unlocked_article_code=1.0U0.V3Jq.cjhODqYYnkRW&#038;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kids Online Safety Act<\/a>, which would require platforms to take a range of steps to protect minors on social media but does not include warning labels,\u201d The New York Times reported. Thankfully, his most recent call has found plenty of allies from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most clear in Murthy\u2019s messaging is the notion that if there\u2019s a will, there\u2019s a way. When it comes to change, it needs to come from all areas of society. It\u2019s not just Congress, nor is the burden placed solely on the shoulders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/breaking-big-tech-strikes-google-removes-prageru-play-store\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Tech<\/a>.
