Her comments drew responses from \u201cHarry Potter\u201d film stars like Daniel Radcliffe\u2064 and Emma Watson, who openly disagreed \u2064with her, aligning themselves with\u2062 transgender rights and\u2062 inclusivity.<\/p>\n<p>The media has continued to spotlight\u2064 the controversy, with some stating that \u2064it has affected the public\u2019s perception of the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series.\u200b Meanwhile, a\u200d play titled \u201cTERF,\u201d which\u200d criticizes Rowling\u2019s views on gender, faced difficulties in casting, particularly \u200cfinding actresses willing to participate. This \u200dresistance\u200b suggests that, despite the \u2062prevalent criticism, there is significant support for Rowling or at least a\u200c reluctance to publicly confront her views \u2064in a \u200ctheatrical setting. The best-selling \u201cHarry Potter\u201d author wasn\u2019t like other celebrities who dabbled in dissent, however. Instead of backing down from her stance on trans acceptance, she doubled down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf sex isn\u2019t real, there\u2019s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn\u2019t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. Several prominent stars from the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d films spoke out against the woman behind the stories that made them internationally known. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2020, Daniel Radcliffe, who played the titular star, wrote an essay for The Trevor Project and apologized for \u201cthe pain\u201d Rowling\u2019s comments may have caused transgender identifying individuals, as The Daily Wire previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/harry-potter-actor-daniel-radcliffe-insists-trans-youth-can-tell-us-who-they-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTransgender women are women,\u201d the actor wrote in the essay. \u201cAny statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/daniel-radcliffe-says-hes-definitely-not-seeking-a-cameo-in-harry-potter-tv-series\/\" title=\"Daniel Radcliffe has no interest in making a cameo appearance in a 'Harry Potter' TV series.\">professional healthcare associations<\/a> who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo [Rowling] or [me].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Actress Emma Watson (who played Hermione in the movies) also shared her thoughts on X. \u201cTrans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren\u2019t who they say they are,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The media has been setting off attacks against Rowling ever since. They disparaged her and claimed fans were abandoning her, and the beloved \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series, in droves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHarry Potter Magic Fades When Creator Tweets,\u201d an NPR article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/10\/873472683\/harry-potters-magic-fades-when-his-creator-tweets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">declared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHarry Potter and the Author Who Failed Us,\u201d a Vox story <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/21285396\/jk-rowling-transphobic-backlash-harry-potter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">echoed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No doubt the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/how-rich-are-jk-rowling-james-patterson-and-the-other-top-10-richest-authors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">first billion-dollar author<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d has received backlash online and beyond. The acronym \u201cTERF\u201d is used as a derogatory term and stands for \u201ctrans-exclusionary radical feminist.\u201d Since making the series of tweets, Rowling has become the most well-known of the accused TERFs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis project has met some kind of resistance every step of the way, though I\u2019ve been generally surprised by how difficult it has been for us to recruit the female cast in particular,\u201d creative producer Barry Church-Woods told the Telegraph of the play, according to a previous report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/90-actresses-reject-roles-in-play-attacking-j-k-rowlings-transgender-stance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it\u2019s fair to say that a few things are coming into play in casting,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A description of the production says, \u201cJo led a blessed life. Literary phenomenon. Cultural icon. And beloved. Completely beloved \u2026 until everything went to hell in a broombasket. Now, Jo\u2019s surrogate children \u2013 Daniel, Rupert, and Emma \u2013 have had enough. It\u2019s time for an intervention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TERF\u2019s creative producer and founder of live arts company We Are Civil Disobedience Barry Church-Woods told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/06\/17\/jk-rowling-play-edinburgh-fringe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PinkNews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cIt\u2019s been very tricky casting this show, I think first in part because they\u2019re actually quite iconic roles to take on, but definitely because there\u2019s been a very vocal misinformed backlash to the project since we announced it early 2024.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cRowling has also become such a beacon for the issue that we\u2019re dealing daily with the enraged \u2018anti-woke\u2019 armies of Breitbart and Fox News. It\u2019s a lot of noise to come up against, and I imagine is quite daunting for anyone who is reading the vitriolic backlash right now,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think there may also be a couple of other factors affecting the casting of the roles,\u201d Church-Woods said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another idea posited for the lack of interest involves a \u201cHarry Potter\u201d television show that is rumored to be in production, which the stars\u2019 talent agents could have their sights on. Being involved in the play could ruin their chances to be cast, the outlet noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The self-identified \u201cqueer\u201d screenwriter Joshua Kaplan previously said the project isn\u2019t a direct attack on Rowling. He claimed the play\u2019s focus \u201cis on relationships and how Rowling\u2019s opinions have evolved\u201d but is not \u201cinterrogating the substance of her opinions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hope the audience will walk out not with a message but a question. I want people to walk out saying, \u2018Maybe I shouldn\u2019t have put that on Twitter the other day,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Church-Woods agreed that the play isn\u2019t meant to be a negative statement on Rowling. \u201cIt\u2019s ironic that the reporting of this project so far has focused on how the show is critical of Rowling,\u201d he told PinkNews. \u201cYet we\u2019ve never actually said it is. No-one has read the script yet apart from us and our legal team, and yet still they all hold strong opinions about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether the questions raised in the play are explicitly or implicitly directed at Rowling\u2019s stance on the trans agenda is irrelevant.
