They questioned Roberts\u2063 on\u2064 what measures are being taken to address these issues, highlighting a growing ethics crisis that risks undermining\u2064 the legitimacy of the Court. The letter represents the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/20\/politics\/aoc-raskin-supreme-court-ethics\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>latest<\/a> in a series of aggressive moves by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats<\/a> to apply pressure to the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe write with alarm about the deepening ethics crisis at the Supreme Court of the United States, which is turning into a full-blown legitimacy crisis,\u201d Raskin and Ocasio-Cortez wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/democrats-oversight.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2024-06-20.JBR%20AOC%20to%20Roberts-SCOTUS%20re%20Ethics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>letter<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cYou have repeatedly asked Congress and the American people to trust Justices of the Supreme Court to police their own conduct, assuring us that \u2018[e]very Justice seeks to follow high ethical standards \u2026 and is committed to the common interest in preserving the Court\u2019s vital role as an impartial tribunal governed by the rule of law.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet, over the past year, revelations by investigative reporters and Senate investigators have established that certain Justices have abused that trust,\u201d the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Alito has been accused of promoting political messages that could conflict with cases before the court this term. The justice\u2019s wife flew an upside-down American flag outside the couple\u2019s home in Virginia after getting into an argument with a neighbor, and an \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag was seen flying in front of their vacation home.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have argued the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3014511\/flags-alito-is-under-fire-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>two flags<\/a> suggested the Alitos were showing solidarity with rioters who flew both flags at the Jan. 6, 2021, riot. <\/p>\n<p>The upside-down American flag was also used during Black Lives Matter protests in the fallout from the murder of George Floyd in 2020, and San Francisco <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3022357\/san-francisco-city-hall-removes-appeal-heaven-flag-alito\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>had flown<\/a> an \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag over its City Hall since 1964 until it was removed earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has been under fire for failing to disclose thousands of dollars in gifts from GOP megadonor Harlan Crow, who treated Thomas and his wife to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/06\/politics\/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-supreme-court-pro-publica\/index.html#:~:text=The%20ProPublica%20report%20describes%20Thomas,by%20Crow%20or%20his%20company.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> vacations<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/13\/politics\/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-private-plane-ethics-supreme-court\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>private plane travel.<\/a> This news comes after recent reporting found Thomas took in more than <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4708390-thomas-has-accepted-4m-in-gifts-during-career-watchdog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>$4 million worth of gifts<\/a> in his tenure on the court, which is far higher than any of the other eight justices. <\/p>\n<p>The two Democrats laid out five questions they want Roberts to answer by July 15 because he has \u201crefused to meet with Congress.\u201d The questions pertain to the steps he is taking in his role as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-senate-judiciary-committee-confirms-amy-coney-barrett-for-supreme-court-democrats-boycott-committee-vote\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Senate Judiciary Committee Confirms Amy Coney Barrett for Supreme Court -- Democrats Boycott Committee Vote\">chief justice<\/a> and presiding officer of the Judicial Conference to investigate Alito and Thomas\u2019s alleged scandals. <\/p>\n<p>Roberts said he declined to meet with Congress because of \u201cseparation of powers concerns and the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chief-justice-roberts-declines-invite-to-meet-with-senate-dems-on-alito\/\" title=\"Chief Justice Roberts Rejects Senate Dems' Meeting Invite for Alito\">preserving judicial independence counsel<\/a> against such appearances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raskin and Ocasio-Cortez pointed to two looming Supreme Court decisions related to the Jan. 6 insurrection and former President Donald Trump\u2019s claims of immunity as part of the reason for their questions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustice Alito\u2019s and Justice Thomas\u2019s transparently partisan ideological activity calls into question their impartiality with regard to matters currently pending before the Supreme Court,\u201d the representatives wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that both Justices have refused to recuse themselves from these matters.
