I was a degenerate gambler, and I also knew I wanted to be in that field,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna53821689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a> in a 2013 report.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet started as a physical print edition but eventually morphed into a web presence, including podcasts and videos. While Portnoy often plays up his image as a boisterous, hyper-masculine sports stereotype, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/barstool-sports-founder-dave-portnoy-pummels-cnn-exposes-utterly-misplaced-priorities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barstool<\/a> contributors say he\u2019s anything but.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl Pres is a character Dave plays. He\u2019s one of the most regular, nondescript guys going, and I mean that as a compliment,\u201d Barstool NFL writer Jerry Thornton told NBC for the 2013 report.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Portnoy finalized the sale of Barstool Sports to the casino and sports-gambling company Penn Entertainment for a total of $551 million, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/dave-portnoy-buys-barstool-sports-back-penn-national-2023-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a>. He bought the company back for only $1 the same year, after the new owners ran into issues with gambling regulators.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also waded into politics on more than one occasion.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Portnoy, who is Jewish, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/barstool-sports-boss-dave-portnoy-doubles-list-colleges-banned-hiring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Fox Business<\/a> that, thanks to \u201chate speech\u201d on certain college campuses over the Israel-Hamas conflict, he would stop hiring from the Ivy Leagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that this will make a huge difference, but moving forward I will not hire any student who graduates from any of these schools until these deans step down,\u201d Portnoy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore businesses should follow this lead. This is unacceptable on every single level. I don\u2019t care if you\u2019re Jewish or not either. If you know a Jew or just have a degree of basic human decency calling for the murder of an entire group of people should outrage you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, more recently, Portnoy blasted \u201crace-baiters\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jemele-hill-says-caitlin-clark-popular-race-sexuality-racial-meltdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trying to turn<\/a> WNBA star Caitlin Clark\u2019s popularity into a social issue, noting the money the No. 1 draft pick is bringing in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow stupid are these other women, though?\u201d he said. \u201cHow hating are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether he\u2019s beaten cancer for good or what the prognosis is, but, in short: We\u2019d ordinarily tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-portnoy-goes-epic-rant-pink-haired-crazy-liberal-nycs-absurd-pizza-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dave Portnoy<\/a> to get better soon from his bout with (hopefully) low-risk cancer.
