Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>White House<\/a> chief of staff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ron-klain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ron Klain<\/a> will take the lead after helping Biden in 2020. The president\u2019s personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, has not confirmed whether he will reprise his role as the president\u2019s stand-in for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump, whose freewheeling style is viewed as both a strength and liability in a rigid debate format, has begun to hold informal strategy sessions, including multiple with Republican senators during his trip to Washington, D.C., last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president will have less time for\u00a0debate\u00a0prep than four years ago given his day job, so prep will largely be confined to immediately prior,\u201d a Biden campaign official told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThe president has gotten increasingly punchier in recent remarks about Trump and plans to carry that theme through to the\u00a0debate while still projecting himself as the wise and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tampa-ball-how-the-buccaneers-built-a-roster-of-rejects-and-misfits-and-won-a-super-bowl\/\" title=\"Tampa-Ball: How The Buccaneers Built A Roster of Rejects And Misfits And Won A Super Bowl\u00a0\">steady leader<\/a> in contrast to Trump\u2019s chaos and division.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next week\u2019s debate could be a pivotal moment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024<\/a> rematch between the two men, with Biden in particular hoping to dispel concerns about his age and mental acuity. For its part, the Biden campaign teased he will lean into familiar Democratic themes, including presenting Trump as a threat to democracy and abortion access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is prepping to hold Trump accountable for his extreme record and the dangerous things he\u2019s been saying on the trail,\u201d the Biden official said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump allies, too, have been making the debate more about policy than the performance of each candidate. <\/p>\n<p>One of those Republicans, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/author\/sen-eric-schmitt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Eric Schmitt<\/a> (R-MO), confirmed he and Trump had an impromptu \u201cwide-ranging\u201d debate session last week at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican National Committee<\/a>\u2018s headquarters during the former president\u2019s tour of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>But he said the point of the debate will be to draw a contrast on everything from the economy to immigration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also a pretty unique opportunity for the American people to see, sort of, a side by side of two people who\u2019ve served as president and what they were able to accomplish, you know, under President Trump and what a disaster Joe\u00a0Biden\u2019s record has been for 3 1\/2 years,\u201d Schmitt told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThat\u2019s a pretty unique contrast that no one\u2019s seen in our lifetimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump has also spoken with policy experts and vice presidential hopefuls, including Sens. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Marco Rubio (R-FL).<\/p>\n<p>The strategy sessions will give Trump a chance to improve on his performance in 2020. During the first debate, his interruptions of Biden were viewed as a mistake, though the mics will be muted when a candidate is not speaking, per the debate rules.<\/p>\n<p>However, Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller dismissed the need for Trump to prepare and even suggested not doing so is part of what will distinguish him from Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The former president \u201ctakes on numerous tough interviews every single week and delivers lengthy rally speeches while standing, demonstrating elite stamina,\u201d Miller told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does not need to be programmed by staff or shot up with chemicals like Joe Biden does,\u201d he added, repeating claims that Biden took performance-enhancing drugs for his most recent State of the Union speech.<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt said Trump didn\u2019t need the advice and predicted he will do well regardless. \u201cHe\u2019s a very effective debater and a great counterpuncher,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The war of words has bled into a disputed story that the Biden campaign tried to negotiate for the pair to debate sitting down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump is a liar and a fraud. His campaign is full of liars and frauds,\u201d the Biden campaign told reporters this week. \u201cTheir desperate leaks and lies to the right-wing media only underscore how scared Donald Trump is to\u00a0debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the messaging war will also continue promptly after the debate ends.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s camp has commissioned its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>first general election ads<\/a> for next Thursday, the day of the debate, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cnn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CNN<\/a>, the network hosting the event. At the same time, Biden\u2019s team has announced a $50 million June ad investment emphasizing Trump\u2019s conviction in his hush money trial.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/karine-jean-pierre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Karine Jean-Pierre<\/a> told reporters this week to \u201cstay tuned\u201d regarding Biden\u2019s schedule when asked whether he would have any public events before the debate, though she did preview the possibility of an appearance on Monday for the second anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Supreme Court<\/a> repealing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Roe v.
