It also must get at least 2% of the total registered electors in each of the 35 Colorado state senate districts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting Educational Freedom: Why School Choice Must Be Placed in the Colorado Constitution,\u201d is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancecolorado.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PROTECTING-EDUCATIONAL-FREEDOM-1-compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15-page report<\/a><\/strong> by Michael Tsogt, a policy analyst with Advance Colorado. The report states school choice in Colorado received bipartisan support throughout the last 30 years. Social Media: \u2018Hallelujah\u2019\">school choice movement<\/a> in the United States is a rejection of the one-size-fits-all model of education,\u201d according to the report. \u201cIn Colorado, which has one of the best school choice statutes in the nation, the next move is to preserve school choice for future generations by cementing it as a right in the Colorado Constitution. This is necessary due to a rising attack against the right to school choice for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report highlighted <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb24-1363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 24-1363<\/a><\/strong>, entitled, \u201cCharter Schools Accountability; Concerning measures to address charter school accountability.\u201d The 55-page bill would have made <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/colorado\/article_9082fc70-dccb-11ee-8b0b-97fa823d11bd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wide-ranging financial and administrative changes<\/a><\/strong> to charter schools.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would have repealed a 5% cap and allowed school districts to retain the cost of any services for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oklahoma-enacts-avalanche-of-culture-war-legislation-protecting-the-unborn-banning-biological-males-from-womens-spaces\/\" title=\"Oklahoma Enacts Avalanche Of Culture War Legislation Protecting The Unborn, Banning Biological Males From Women\u2019s Spaces\">charter school students<\/a>, including reimbursements for special education services. It also would have changed regulations on procedural matters with charter schools, school districts and the state board of education.<\/p>\n<p>After an eight-hour hearing on April 11, the House Education Committee voted 8-3 to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/colorado\/article_c424a078-f8fb-11ee-aaa6-631bc35830f3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">postpone the bill.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the current anti-school choice makeup of the General Assembly, putting the right to school choice in Colorado\u2019s constitution must be accomplished by a citizens\u2019 initiative,\u201d according to the report. \u201cBecause of the recent assaults on school choice, it is only a matter of time before the opportunity to cement this right ceases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing support of charter schools also might be influenced by next week\u2019s election for members of the state board of education. Charter school advocates currently have a 5-4 majority, but a race between Democrats Marisol Rodriguez and Kathy Gebhardt will be key, according to an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/petergreene\/2024\/06\/15\/in-colorado-state-board-of-education-primary-election-attracts-big-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis by Forbes.<\/a><\/strong> Progressives Supporting Teachers and Students donated $569,594 to the Rodriguez campaign and the Colorado League of Charter Schools donated $125,000, according to the publication.<\/p>\n<p>By adding charter schools to the state constitution, Advance Colorado argues lawmakers would have to get a vote of the people to make changes and the state supreme court would be required to review any law infringing on school choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the sake of Colorado\u2019s future, we must preserve charter schools, home schools, private schools, trade schools, magnet schools, online learning, open enrollment, and future innovations in education by putting school choice in our state constitution,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Advance Colorado, a nonpartisan nonprofit, is pushing to secure charter school rights in Colorado&#8217;s Constitution.
