Clem, who was \u2063promoted to Yuma Sector\u200b chief shortly\u200c before President Joe Biden took\u2062 office, \u200dcriticized the reversal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republican-legislators-in-these-14-states-are-backing-texas-over-biden-border-standoff\/\" title=\"Republican lawmakers in 14 states support Texas in the border dispute with President Biden\">previous border security measures<\/a> under the new\u200d administration, highlighting a\u200b dramatic increase in migrant arrests.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden&#8217;s recent announcement of an immigration amnesty program,\u200c aimed to expand DACA protections and accelerate citizenship for some illegal entrants, was\u200d also a key topic. Clem expressed concerns that this \u200bpolicy \u200dmight encourage more illegal immigration and overlook existing laws meant \u2063to protect family situations. He pointed out that the large numbers of family units and\u2063 unaccompanied \u2063children began arriving during the Obama era, coinciding with\u200b the \u2063initial implementation of \u200dDACA.<\/p>\n<p>Clem also raised alarms about Michigan\u2019s specific vulnerabilities, considering its position along the northern border and high rates\u2064 of\u2063 human trafficking.\u2062 With Michigan&#8217;s substantial immigrant \u200bpopulation, Clem argued it may\u200b inadvertently draw more \u2062individuals attempting to enter the country illegally.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting broader security concerns, Clem noted that \u2062since Biden&#8217;s administration \u2064began, there have been about 1.8 million \u200b&#8221;got-aways&#8221; \u2013 individuals detected \u2062but\u200c not apprehended at the border and now unaccounted for.\u2064 Total migrant encounters under\u2062 the current\u200d administration have\u200c exceeded 9.57 million, as \u200breported by the House Committee on\u2064 Homeland Security.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 The immigration wave at the southern border is a crisis of national security, and Michigan is not exempt from its effects, a recently retired Border Patrol chief says.<\/p>\n<p>Former Chief Chris Clem, who is visiting Michigan as part of Americans for Prosperity\u2019s \u201cSecure Borders, Secure America\u201d tour, served more than 27 years and under five presidents as a U.S. border patrol agent. He was promoted to Yuma Sector chief in December 2020, right before President Joe Biden took office. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched what I would say was one of the most secure borders and supportive administrations on border security, to have it completely reversed in a matter of days under this administration. And the numbers tell that story as well. You don\u2019t go from 400,000 arrests to 1.66 million, to 2 million, to 2.2 million, without a policy direction issue,\u201d Clem told The Center Square.<\/p>\n<p>Biden announced Tuesday an immigration amnesty program that would expand DACA protections and accelerate the pathway to citizenship for those who enter the country illegally and are married to a U.S. citizen for more than 10 years, The Center Square <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_a0a543dc-2d67-11ef-9cb8-4b986ffa2c9f.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Clem said he\u2019s concerned the measure is more about gaining political points and that it will send the wrong message to migrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that we want to protect the family situation, but we also have to realize there is already a law in place to do this,\u201d Clem said. \u201c[Biden\u2019s proposed program] will encourage more people to come over, because it was under President Obama and DACA that we started seeing a large number of family units and unaccompanied children coming\u2026I\u2019ve seen that play out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Total migrant encounters at the southern border have surpassed 9.57 million since Biden took office, according to the House Committee on Homeland Security. <\/p>\n<p>Clem said Michigan is vulnerable because of its position along the northern border, and its high rates of human trafficking activity. It also has a large immigrant population, which is a good thing, Clem said, but also tends to attract people who enter the country illegally.<\/p>\n<p>Clem emphasized that it\u2019s not just the 1.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-retired-border-chief-says-michigan-other-states-face-impacts-of-border-crisis\/\" title=\"Exclusive: Former border chief claims Michigan and other states are affected by border crisis\">5 million illegal entry attempts<\/a> that are concerning, but the number of people who have succeeded entering the country illegally and are now unaccounted for. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are approximately 1.8 million known \u2018got-aways\u2019 that have entered since this administration has taken over\u2013that\u2019s somebody who has been detected, we saw them, we tracked them, but we never could arrest them. So we have no idea who those people are,\u201d Clem said.<\/p>\n<p>The situation has sparked concerns among officials about possible terrorist attacks, leading Republican senators to call for a border terrorism hearing, The Center Square previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_ada631a4-2d7b-11ef-b95a-cbdab687872a.html\">reported<\/a>. Clem said he doesn\u2019t normally talk about hypotheticals, but grants that these fears are statistically reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that we have caught over 300 people on the Terrorist Screening Database in the last three and a half years. There were just recently eight Tajikistani nationals who have ISIS-K ties, that entered illegally and were released\u2026So it\u2019s not something that\u2019s made up, it\u2019s not some conspiracy that terrorists are coming across the border\u2026When you\u2019re looking at the number of criminals we\u2019re encountering, the amount of gang members we\u2019re encountering, and the people on the watchlists, statistically speaking we know that they\u2019re going to be in that group of got-aways,\u201d Clem said.<\/p>\n<p>Clem believes the solution is fourfold: <\/p>\n<p>* Secure the border by expanding walls, forts and technology. <\/p>\n<p>* The immigration system should attract the \u201cbest and brightest\u201d people who can contribute to America in local, meaningful ways.<\/p>\n<p>* The administration must articulate and enforce clear, predictable rules and pathways into the United States; this will encourage people to take the legal route and impose consequences on the people who are exploiting the system.<\/p>\n<p>* The Department of Homeland Security needs to greatly increase transparency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers and the stories that we get are not what is truly happening.
