He has sought to defend his own tenure in government in a new memoir published this week. He has also faced renewed congressional scrutiny in recent weeks. This <\/em>Washington Examiner <em>series, Fauci Unmasked, will look at his record and legacy<\/em>. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3045129\/fauci-unmasked-clearing-record-masks-social-distancing-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Part 1<\/a> looked at Fauci\u2019s record of statements on masks, social distancing, and vaccines. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3048613\/fauci-origins-covid-congressional-investigation-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Part 2<\/a> reviewed his role as a person of interest in the investigation into the origins of the pandemic.<\/em> <em>Part 3 explores the loss of trust in institutions over the past few years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/anthony-fauci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Anthony Fauci\">Anthony Fauci<\/a>\u2018s return to the headlines, propelled by the release of his new autobiography and his recent testimony before Congress, comes as trust in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"public health\">public health<\/a> agencies such as the one he led is waning, raising the question of who\u2019s to blame for the fall.<\/p>\n<p>For supporters of the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, the answer is former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> and his followers. A chapter of Fauci\u2019s new book, <em>On Call: A Doctor\u2019s Journey in Public Service<\/em>, is dedicated to their relationship, and Fauci\u2019s defenders say The Donald is to blame for any loss of public trust.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA), ranking member of the House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, said during a June 3 hearing that Republicans had \u201cweaponized\u201d the committee to fuel sentiment against scientists and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">public health officials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have done so with one particular public health official in mind: Dr. Anthony Fauci,\u201d Ruiz said. \u201cAnd they have done so in an effort to deflect blame and anguish for the damage the pandemic inflicted on our society away from the former president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even the new book\u2019s teaser makes a version of this argument, reading, \u201c[Fauci\u2019s] role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans and Trump supporters, though, say Fauci harmed faith in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-cabinet-pick-defended-unconstitutional-religious-restrictions\/\" title=\"Biden Cabinet Pick Defended Unconstitutional Religious Restrictions\">public health agencies<\/a> and the scientific community through his actions as the public face of the pandemic, such as his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3045129\/fauci-unmasked-clearing-record-masks-social-distancing-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"conflicting advice\">conflicting advice<\/a> on masking and social distancing and his early attempts to downplay the \u201clab leak\u201d theory of COVID-19\u2019s origins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kept hearing apologies to Dr.\u00a0Fauci. We never got one from him. And I think it would have really helped the country,\u201d Chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-oversight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Select Subcommittee<\/a> on the Coronavirus Pandemic Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3028018\/covid-panel-head-dings-fauci-no-remorse-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"recently told\">recently told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can talk about the origins of COVID and things like that all day long,\u201d Wenstrup added. \u201cBut if you\u2019re looking at why we don\u2019t trust our public health system, we have plenty of reasons and we\u2019re finding those out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some members of the scientific community, such as the outspoken lab leak theory advocate Richard Ebright, a Rutgers University chemical biology professor, have criticized Fauci as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic trust in science and science agencies has been severely damaged by the dishonesty from scientists and science and health agencies during the pandemic,\u201d Ebright said. \u201cNo person has done more to damage trust in science than Fauci. Fauci lied even when the facts were in full view, and the lies were obvious. He has no shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Polling has marked the decline of trust, as well as some of the reasons behind it.<\/p>\n<p>The share of people who have confidence in the medical system has fallen from as high as 51% in 2020 to 34% last year, Gallup polling <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/1597\/confidence-institutions.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Distrust of scientists has risen in the wake of the pandemic. As of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2023\/11\/14\/americans-trust-in-scientists-positive-views-of-science-continue-to-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>most recent<\/a> Pew Research Center polling of last year, 27% of people now say they have not too much or no confidence in scientists to act in the public\u2019s best interests, up from 12% in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2776380\/most-people-who-lack-trust-in-public-health-officials-cite-political-influence-as-top-concern-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"poll\">poll<\/a>, released in March 2023, found that 74% of people who did not trust public health agencies cited political influence as the key reason for the distrust. Conflicting recommendations from health officials were cited by 73%.<\/p>\n<p>Trust in public health agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, declined significantly in the aftermath of the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/poll-finding\/the-covid-19-pandemic-insights-from-three-years-of-kff-polling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"according to\">according to<\/a> KFF polling, driven by rising skepticism on the part of Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The decline in trust is reflected in lowered rates of vaccination. <\/p>\n<p>In January of this year, \u201cvaccine fatigue\u201d was cited as the reason behind a sharply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2793002\/low-vaccination-rates-across-globe-covid-fatigue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"dropping rate of vaccination\">dropping rate of vaccination<\/a> against respiratory diseases both in the United States and abroad. In the U.S., rates of uptake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/imz-managers\/coverage\/covidvaxview\/interactive\/vaccination-dashboard.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>updated <\/a>COVID-19 vaccine is slightly under a quarter of adults, with an additional 10.3% saying they intend to get the shot. <\/p>\n<p>Even vaccination rates for other diseases have fallen. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7245a2.htm#:~:text=National%20MMR%20coverage%20of%2093.1,at%20risk%20for%20measles%20infection.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according to<\/a> the CDC, uptake of the MMR vaccine, which provides protection against measles, mumps, and rubella, fell from 95% in the 2019-2020 school year to 93% in the 2021-2022 school year. Several jurisdictions are less than 90% vaccinated, including Washington, D.C., Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>The decline has alarmed the medical community. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose of us in healthcare are definitely leaning into this and paying attention,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/person\/patricia-a-stinchfield-rn-ms-cpnp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patricia Stinchfield<\/a>, president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2848255\/measles-outbreak-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"previously told\">previously told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci acknowledged in testimony before Congress that vaccine mandates may have contributed to low trust in vaccinations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2790656\/house-republicans-fauci-laments-covid-policies-tell-all-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"according\">according<\/a> to Wenstrup.<\/p>\n<p>But the flip side of being a polarizing figure is that Fauci retains a litany of high-profile defenders, especially on the Democratic side of the aisle. <\/p>\n<p>Ruiz, who, like Wenstrup, is a doctor himself, gave a strident defense of Fauci ahead of his latest appearance before Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can go down the path of fueling mistrust in the interventions that saved us \u2014 like vaccines, masking, and social distancing \u2014\u00a0and the public health officials, like Dr. Fauci, who worked tirelessly,\u201d Ruiz said. \u201cOr we can work constructively on the forward-looking policies and solutions that we know are necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3024645\/fauci-no-evidence-masking-social-distancing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> in testimony to Congress that the 6-foot social distancing rule promoted by the CDC during the pandemic \u201csort of just appeared\u201d and said he did not recall reviewing studies about the effectiveness of masks on children.<\/p>\n<p>Several other Democrats, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), praised Fauci as well during the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation of Dr. Fauci shows he is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/indiana-congresswoman-jackie-walorski-and-3-others-killed-in-car-crash\/\" title=\"Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski and 3 Others Killed in Car Crash\">honorable public servant<\/a> who has devoted his entire career to the public health and the public interest, and he is not a comic book supervillain,\u201d Raskin said. \u201cHe did not fund research to create the COVID-19 pandemic. He did not lie to Congress about gain-of-function research and Wuhan. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/dr-anthony-fauci-on-pandemics-partisan-critics-and-the-psyche-of-the-country\/ar-BB1ojM4d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> CBS News that he has no regrets about his lengthy career. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny regrets of what I did? My choices? No,\u201d Fauci said. \u201cCould we have done things better on multiple points, inflection points along the way? Of course. Because we\u2019re not perfect. You try your best and you realize with humility that you\u2019re not perfect. And you don\u2019t pretend to be perfect.
