Abigail Spanberger<\/a> (D-VA).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog-posts\/eugene-vindman-wins-democratic-primary-to-replace-retiring-rep-abigail-spanberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eugene Vindman<\/a>, a key figure best known for reporting the phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2018 that led to Trump\u2019s first impeachment, won the Democratic primary to replace Spanberger in Virginia\u2019s 7th District on Tuesday. Vindman\u2019s victory is likely to pave the way for a competitive race that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-derek-chauvin-agreed-to-plea-bargain-but-trump-ag-william-barr-rejected-deal\/\" title=\"Report: Derek Chauvin Agreed To Plea Bargain But Trump AG William Barr Rejected Deal\">garner national attention<\/a> and massive amounts of money from both parties.<\/p>\n<p>Vindman first entered the national spotlight after he and his brother sounded the alarm about the phone call between Trump and Zelensky, during which Trump pressed the Ukrainian president to announce an investigation into Hunter Biden\u2019s business dealings as his father, Joe Biden, considered running for president in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>It was that phone call and the Vindman brothers\u2019 report that led to Trump\u2019s first impeachment in 2019. Vindman leaned on that experience throughout his primary campaign, framing his dismissal from the White House in 2020 as retaliation.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI sacrificed my military career to expose Trump\u2019s corruption,\u201d Vindman said in one of his campaign ads.<\/p>\n<p>That experience could give Vindman a boost as he runs in a competitive House district that Biden won by more than 6 points in 2020. It could especially help as many Republicans tie themselves to Trump amid his legal troubles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The race is considered to favor the Democratic candidate slightly as a D+1 district, but Republicans view it as a prime opportunity to flip the seat back to red for the first time since Spanberger was elected in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, it wouldn\u2019t be the first time a Democratic candidate has leaned on impeachment stardom to help elevate his or her political status. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who played a crucial role in Trump\u2019s first impeachment, has relied on much of that experience for his Senate bid in California.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has also become a well-known figure among Democrats after being chosen to lead Trump\u2019s second impeachment following the Jan. 6 riot, later being appointed the ranking member of the powerful House Oversight Committee.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, Schiff and Raskin largely benefited from those roles because of their seats in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hillary-clinton-warns-that-progressive-dems-could-ruin-their-partys-chances-in-2022\/\" title=\"Hillary Clinton Warns That \u2018Progressive\u2019 Dems Could Ruin Their Party\u2019s Chances In 2022\">deep-blue districts<\/a>. Vindman\u2019s use of the strategy could be more of a wildcard in the swing district in Virginia, but it could be a catalyst for the candidate to attract a national donor base to boost his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Vindman will face Republican Derrick Anderson, a former Green Beret who is already <a href=\"https:\/\/dccc.org\/the-case-against-derrick-anderson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being targeted<\/a> by Democrats as a \u201cfar-right extremist\u201d who is \u201canti-abortion and anti-democracy.\u201d Democrats are also expected to attack Anderson on his support for Trump after the former president was convicted on 34 felony charges in New York last month.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson decried the conviction as a political \u201cweaponization of the justice system,\u201d saying he stood with Trump and \u201cthe defense of his innocence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dccc.org\/the-case-against-derrick-anderson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats were quick to seize<\/a> on that defense after Anderson won his primary on Tuesday, arguing he would be \u201canother MAGA extremist doing Trump\u2019s bidding in Congress at the expense of Virginia families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Virginia\u2019s 7th Congressional District had long been a Republican stronghold until Spanberger flipped the seat in the 2018 midterm elections during a Democratic blue wave. Spanberger has been reelected every cycle since then but is forgoing reelection this year to run for governor of Virginia in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Republicans view the race as a ripe opportunity to flip the district back into GOP control as part of their efforts to expand their slim majority in the House.
