The program will \u2062enable young and nonviolent offenders, as\u2064 well as victims of domestic \u200bviolence,\u2062 to apply \u200bfor early release from prison. The initiative reflects the state&#8217;s commitment towards building a system equipped for second chances, particularly focusing on \u2064the most urgent cases. This move is seen as a step toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/christian-schools-vastly-outperforming-public-schools-during-covid-19-according-to-new-survey-of-parents\/\" title=\"Christian Schools Vastly Outperforming Public Schools During COVID-19, According To New Survey Of Parents\">achieving racial justice<\/a>, recognizing\u2063 the disproportionate\u200c impact of harsh parole regulations\u200c on Black and Brown communities. \u2063Murphy, along with Lt. Gov. The response from state Democrats has been positive, whereas the Republicans have remained mostly unresponsive.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/phil-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Phil Murphy<\/a> (D-NJ) is using this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/juneteenth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Juneteenth<\/a> holiday to seek out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/news\/crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>criminal<\/a> justice reform. The governor issued an executive order to create a new clemency program, which will allow some young and nonviolent offenders, along with domestic violence victims and others, to apply to leave prison early.<\/p>\n<p>The program aims to address mass incarceration, racial injustice, and parole rules that make it difficult for people to get a new start when they leave prison, supporters said. A clemency board will review petitions and make recommendations to Murphy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on our nation\u2019s ongoing journey toward racial justice for Black and Brown Americans, I am proud to sign this Executive Order to help address inequities and unfairness in our system of justice in New Jersey,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>Murphy said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/governor\/news\/news\/562024\/approved\/20240619a.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new clemency initiative is a cornerstone of our Administration\u2019s efforts to make New Jersey the State of Second Chances. Today, we pledge to take a responsible and equity-driven approach to pardons and commutations that will prioritize the most compelling cases,\u201d the Democratic governor added.<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, who is black, also weighed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the spirit of Juneteenth, today we take another step forward in the ongoing struggle for racial justice in America,\u201d\u00a0Way said. \u201cToo many people have been failed by our criminal justice system. The signing of this Executive Order provides second chances for our society and those who receive clemency.
