The Chinese Swimming Association announced a total\u200c roster of 31 swimmers. These swimmers were among 23\u2064 athletes who \u2063tested positive \u200bfor trimetazidine, a \u2062drug banned since 2014 and\u2062 commonly used to increase\u2062 blood flow to the heart, before the 2021 \u200dTokyo Olympics. Chinese authorities later cleared these athletes, citing accidental\u200d exposure through contaminated\u2064 food. Half of them \u2062competed in Tokyo.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_79\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>China<\/a> named 11 swimmers who previously tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs to its 2024 Olympic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>swim<\/a> team.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Swimming Association revealed its roster of 31 swimmers Tuesday, including 11 who tested positive for the drug trimetazidine seven months before the 2021 Tokyo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trimetazidine is typically used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/these-four-common-medications-can-cause-hair-loss\/\" title=\"These Four Common Medications Can Cause Hair Loss\">treat heart-related conditions<\/a> and works by increasing blood flow to the heart, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/news\/what-trimetazidine-drug-center-valievas-doping-drama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according to<\/a> NBC Olympics. The drug has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-three Chinese athletes tested positive for the drug ahead of the Tokyo Olympics but were cleared by Chinese authorities, which said the athletes were accidentally exposed to the drug through contaminated food. Half of the athletes went on to compete in Tokyo after the WADA accepted China\u2019s explanation.<\/p>\n<p>The positive tests were not made public at the time and were only revealed earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The WADA defended its decision to allow the Chinese athletes to compete in an April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/en\/news\/wada-statement-case-23-swimmers-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not possible for WADA scientists or investigators to conduct their inquiries on the ground in China given the extreme restrictions in place due to a COVID-related lockdown,\u201d it said. \u201cWADA ultimately concluded that it was not in a position to disprove the possibility that contamination was the source of TMZ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s team for the 2024 Olympics includes Tokyo gold medalists Zhang Yufei and Wang Shun, both of whom tested positive for trimetazidine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cClean play is supposed to be at the forefront of the Olympics, and I think it\u2019s really disappointing we\u2019re in this situation three years after this all happened,\u201d seven-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/2024\/06\/14\/katie-ledecky-china-doping-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in a recent interview after the positive tests came to light. \u201cIt\u2019s tough to accept as an athlete, and now also to feel what it\u2019s like to be an athlete who won a [silver] medal behind some athletes who tested positive \u2014 I now know what that feels like.
