Additionally,\u200d the \u2064new initiative by Lara \u200dTrump and the RNC to train poll\u200d watchers to \u2063detect fraud coincides with\u2063 the implementation of this\u200b training, which includes understanding Georgia&#8217;s laws on\u2062 prohibition of providing food or drink\u2064 to voters in line and \u2063restrictions on \u2064carrying firearms.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Georgia<\/a> has become the first state to mandate training in election law as a requirement for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>police<\/a> officers to attain state certification, according to the state police\u2019s standards council.<\/p>\n<p>The new one-hour course for police trainees aims to ensure officers are well prepared and informed about enforcing the law effectively on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/election-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Election Day<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jun\/19\/georgia-police-election-law-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Chris Harvey, deputy executive director for the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCops just really need to know what are some of the basic ground rules around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>elections<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>voting<\/a>, because they\u2019re very specific,\u201d he said. \u201cIn my opinion, the worst thing that can happen is if you have a partisan person or partisan force trying to manipulate the police, and the police do not have any idea what they\u2019re supposed to be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harvey suggested that battleground states like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/arizona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Arizona<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Pennsylvania<\/a>, and others should also consider implementing this training mandate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving seen the threats to election officials, having seen things happen to polling places, having myself been threatened during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2020-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2020 election<\/a>, I know that \u2026 it was likely that election officials were going to be calling the police,\u201d Harvey said.<\/p>\n<p>The new mandate comes as Lara Trump and the RNC have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rnc-election-monitoring-trump-republicans-voter-fraud-997947656e0b5d5d16cc4353bd726452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>rolled out<\/a> a new initiative to recruit poll watchers and train them to detect alleged fraud. <\/p>\n<p>The training material covers Georgia\u2019s law prohibiting the provision of food or drink to voters in line and the restriction on carrying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>guns<\/a> within 150 feet of polling places. <\/p>\n<p>Even though the mandate will not take effect until January, Harvey said training will be available within weeks. <\/p>\n<p>Harvey collaborated with a nonpartisan group, Committee for Safe and Secure Elections, formed after the 2020 election, to develop this training and a pocket guide for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sheriffs-tell-newsom-they-wont-enforce-covid-curfew\/\" title=\"California Sheriffs Tell Newsom They Won't Enforce COVID Curfew\">police officers<\/a> responding to polling problems. The training focuses on de-escalation techniques and nonthreatening conduct.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the training material highlights that police officers have a positive duty to prevent election interference and intimidation, meaning they can be criminally liable for not intervening in such situations. This obligation stems from both state and federal law.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For instance, during the 2020 election, police in San Marcos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Texas<\/a>, violated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ku-klux-klan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ku Klux Klan<\/a> Act of 1871 by not intervening when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Trump<\/a> supporters harassed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Biden<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Harris<\/a> bus. San Marcos ultimately settled a suit over the affair for $175,000 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t expect police to be experts in election law, but we expect them to know that there\u2019s a place they can go to get these answers,\u201d Harvey said. \u201cHopefully, it\u2019ll click in.
